I lived on Harbor Bay Island aka Bay Farm Island in the 80s. We had moved out to Colorado in June 88 just before the big earthquake and the fire later on. So very very sad for all. But now look at Oakland...lost to the homeless and govt of any kind. America in decline. Thanks Newsome and Dems!

I have family living in Hawaii. My cousin and his wife recently moved to another one of the islands just a few months before the fire on Maui. So they missed the fire. Otherwise they would have been in the targeted area of the fire. I praise God that they are okay. I prayed for those who lost their lives.

If it over 38 degrees C and is a forecast very windy day and you live in fire risky area with lots of trees near your home, being gone is almost always the go. If you not a firefighter it simply best to spend that day away from your home and that area and not risk your life. There are not many days where the conditions fit that description so if I lived in such an area there no way I staying in that area on that one day.

Except that up north, as in 2020 they (rightly) evacuated large areas, which for some of us was an incredible hardship... Hope we don't have to go through that again this year! And every year I sweat out the fire season: keep an eye out especially when it's windy, monitor public safety on the scanner, and so on, but this film has me stressed!

How devastating, any catastrophe is bad but I don’t know there’s something about fire. And isn’t it weird how everything can burn and then there’s one thing that survived or two things. I live in British Columbia. We are in the middle of a drought right now and have been for the last few years and we’ve had devastating forest fires, and there was a really bad one a couple years ago about an hour down the road that involved friends and neighbors. And as you drive through the area, you can see all the trees burned and then you can see partial trees that are burned on one side and there’s houses that survived and houses that burned it’s crazy. Such a good movie. So realistic, good acting thanks for sharing.

I had literally moved to Napa from Lake County just days before this. I remember standing at the window at 9:00 that Sunday morning, thinking it was strangely warm and still. I was like the Chief, completely unfamiliar with the Oakland region, and without benefit of maps or Google in those days. I remember being horrified but not necessarily surprised as the news played out later that day. It truly was a "perfect storm" of the worst conditions. I later met a cousin who lost his home in the fire. This movie was well done and illustrated the events more than anything I saw or heard about it then. Hard to believe it's been 32 years this month.

Fire is a wonderful thing, but it can also be a beast and destroy property and lives. This was a wonderful movie showing the dangers of fire and how communities can come together to help each other in times of need. I am not a firefighter, but I have been trained to fight fires. I fought my first one at the age of 9, by helping the fire brigade fight a grass fire that we won. It took a couple of hours to beat. I was not the only child helping; two of my mates were with me, and I believe we learned a lot about fires that day by helping put this so-called minor fire out. Being young, we of course did not look upon it as a minor fire as it was also close to houses. I have also fought a couple of house fires as well as bushfires and one on an aircraft carrier. All were won, I will add. I have a lot of respect for those who do this job on a daily basis.

I remember when this happened and was horrified at the time and remember praying for all of those people and the fire fighters. To see this now in 2023 reminds me of the stories several of my friends at church told me about the fire in Paradise CA. WE sent people from our Church in Oregon with a caravan of trucks containing all kinds of supplies, not once but several times. WE sent furniture, building supplies, appliances, clothing, food, water generators, first aid supplies, even brought RV's for people to live in. OUR missionary people helped to frame up houses after helping to clean out the burned out areas too. WE have had many more "wild fires" here in Oregon than we have ever had in the State's history. Also, Canada has suffered greatly too. However, we have had the same amount of lightening strikes now as when I was a kid, and yet not as many fires. So many of these fires today are being caused by humans carelessness with cigarettes, campfires, and yes, even illegal fireworks. There has been cases of pure arson. It has zero to do with climate change and everything to do with humankind becoming more wicked, deceitful and just plain selfish. I find that very, very sad. One of our worst fires that wiped out a town, a lake and reservoir are, including beautiful forest and campgrounds was started by ARSON. I find that to be very very sad indeed. Thanks for the film! It was very informative.

Thank you for your comments and the actions by your church. I did a lot for the fire victims in the Mackenzie. I knew there would be problems before the high winds with down power lines and was incredulous they were not turned off. I've done a lot of camping in Oregon through nights of lightning and helped spot fires in the Cascades. But I mainly want to comment on the problem with arsonists in Oregon. There's a lot more than people realize and I wonder how Oregon police caught arsonists and they were released only to start new fires. I live near a neighborhood park on the west side of Eugene and when it's dry and the winds come up and arsonist has been setting grass fires next to the trees but luckily fireman put them out. This has happened for several summers. One in June was 121st arson fire in Oregon for the season. If they catch the arsonists those sick people need to be put away forever. No release into society.

When Oakland was still halfway decent. Now it’s downright petrifying. In 1992 I was 3 years away from becoming a 911 dispatcher for 24 years. I cannot fathom working a wildfire. I worked for 3 agencies in 3 counties just outside of Chicago, and only experienced 1 brush fire from a controlled burn that became out of control. That was the worst, and hardest call I experienced only because I had nothing to work off of, and was all alone as the only fire dispatcher in the room. Forty three pieces of equipment, I shut down an expressway whose next exit was O’Hare Airport. Kudos to all of California’s Emergency Services Division…Forestry, Fire, Police, Dispatchers!!! Retired Illinois Dispatcher *836

How horribly tragic fire is. My friend lived in Oakland til he graduated high school. He was 21 when this fire occurred. He still had family in the area. 1.5 billion in damages. I wonder how much that would be today? Probably 100 times that at least. They do have a memorial park named after the fire. My family could have moved to Palo Alto in the 70s for my dad’s job. But my grandmother was sick and my mom was taking care of her so we stayed on the other coast. I think about how I would have been able to see the smoke from this fire from my parents house had we moved to Ca. I’m glad I wasn’t there to see it. I’ve only seen small wildfires up close here. Nothing even close to the magnitude of this fire. I feel for those who lost loved ones and their homes and businesses.

I was born and raised in Oakland, CA this was after our major earthquake October 17, 1989. We lived in West Oakland, and When this all happened I began having an allergy attack so bad I gave myself an Concussion I sneezed really hard in the bathroom and slammed my head into the marble sink. My doctor said I couldn't go out in that Air because it was going to kill Me. Someone got me my allergy med's and brought them to our house; and this dude people knew as The Mountain Man he brought a can of straight up Coke Cola and said the Cola formal can help with my breathing. I thought it was odd till I saw the Michael J. Fox movie Doc Hollywood he was about too do routine surgery on a kid and when the town main doctor arrived he popped open a can of coke cola for the kids Asthma attack. I guess Mountain man wasn't wrong. The most poignant thing other than my concussion having too stay home from school because it still wasn't safe Berkeley, CA. was having it's Firestorm along with ours at the same time and of course A famous Oakland Hotel in that area the Fire burned all around the Hotel but, the hotel itself never burned down. During this Fire however it jumped The Freeway which then freaked a lot of people out. I had once attended a school in that area for 3 year's before this Fire a serious situation came up with the school an so I transferred too another school. Coincidentally my new school, I could look up at a specific road actually that took people to that old school of mine. Going back too School after the Fire it was all hazy and the road couldn't be seen from my position. I just marveled if I hadn't transferred what might have happened but, hey after The Big Quake October 17, 1989 my family lived 5 minutes away from The Cypress Freeway that collapsed and we had just gotten off of it right before the Earthquake. An Yes just like the woman said here in the movie my cat went crazy too before The Big Quake Hit. Since my allergies were everywhere my cousins had too take my cat mouthpiece who luckily lived North Oakland going towards Berkeley.

Yeah.. I live in Massachusetts now, but we lived in Southern California in the eighties. And were staying in a hotel for a few months before our place here was ready. We felt the earthquake down where we were. The people in the next room were from Oakland on their way home. So we shared stories about earthquakes with them. They left the next day. I’ve always wondered if the fires burned their home down.

@@americanakita Well, if you have cloud back up. Don't bother with the lab top unless you routinely store it in a bag with stuff that you may need if your home disappears when not in use, and which you can just grab as you run out of the house to get away. I live in little peaceful Denmark, and we have no quakes worth mentioning at all, but occasionally a wildfire or flooding even if it is way less severe than the ones you get in United States, Canada and Australia. But just in case it should happen in our nearby wood, I always have a bag with some clothes and my personal papers (copies) such as birth certificate and insurance policies and other important documents and extra toilet things and towels and then some emergency stuff like a torch/flashlight, a bit of dried/canned foot for a couple of days and containers that I can fill with water. And it's always in the trunk of my car along with a good sleeping bag. So, if something happens and my home disappears while I',m away, I have the means to cope until insurance and community can set me up in temporary housing or find me a permanent home. I am also a naval Home Guard sailor, and for that purpose have a backpack with all my uniform stuff and gear in case of an alarm for a rescue or environment or block ship emergency. So, I'm pretty well covered no matter what happens. It also means that I don't have to fuss or panic or rush things, but can just grab my car keys and get going without all the stress you always see many Americans dealing with when a quake or a wildfire happens. And I have tried a wildfire (and some floodings) as the Home Guard will help out in such cases, and even tried clearing an area and holding a line against fire, only to suddenly realize that the fire have jumped us and is now also behind us, so I know only too well how fast and unpredictable they can be.

Yeah, the script and acting were really bad. But still watched as it was about a real fire. Only used to fires in Australia so curious how the conditions might be a different for a fire in California area. Only about three actors I seen before. One guy from Star Trek Next Generations series. The Dad from Family Ties and not sure whom woman in wheel chair was, but seen her before, probably in similar average tv movies of similar time period.

This fire could be compared to Ash Wednesday 1983,Black Tuesday 2005,Black Saturday 2009 and Black Summer 2019/2020 in terms of property loss, area burnt and injuries only fire that could eclipse the Oakland fire with lives lost is Black Saturday when 173 lives were claimed As an undergraduate in emergency management I know sooner rather than later special conditions conducive to these kinds of fires will happen again and that I'll be right on the front lines either helping save lives or deciding where resources go

@@shorty7363 It's very easy to sit and watch and be all cool about it, but if you are in the situation, see the tree falling and the hood catch fire very rapidly while you are also bumper to bumper both ahead and behind, while the houses in the street around you are also on fire, maybe, just maybe, it isn't that easy to keep a cool head if you are not a trained emergency worker.

@@angelswalking3839 I got home from work that day and at that point, I thought, wow, we escaped the most dangerous fire risk day without a massive disaster, this was probably around 5:30 pm in the afternoon. I was in Melbourne. I actually had not caught up with all the news and the wind direction of fires had changed. I was too early with my sense of relief. I think there was over 100 lives lost that day. I wish the day before many more people leave their home for that one day in two decades type weather conditions that forecast. 46 to 48 degrees C maybe only experienced a few times in a lifetime so why risk your life on such a day if you live close to trees and bushland.

What about some sympathy for the guys actually manning the hoses? They had no access to phones and couldn't try to contact their families. And they would have been reamed if they had tried. The fire chief had the privilege of phone access and no one to yell at him for using them to phone home.

and still they rebuilt timber houses with timber frames and wood surrounds! I'll never understand that with the Americans! Build a slightly smaller house using 'Light Gauge Steel Frame' on a concrete base, with MgO (or other fireproof) panelling and you'll have yourself a house which will stand while all other burn.

And what people dont often think about is that these fires are increasing worldwide and another feedback loop is happening, the more fires the more CO2 goes into atmosphere which only feeds back into more fires. In australia we are already into fire threats well before time and that window between sessional fire threats is now sept thru to potentially april 7 months....and we too often forget the wildlife lost that impact upon local ecosystems. rarely do we give that much attention. we lost millions of animal in our last major fires.

I'm sorry for everyone that experienced losses from that fire!💔 I have a few complaints about the movie though. Why weren't the firefighters aiming at the base of the flames!!? I thought that was the first thing they're taught in training! What really bothers me is that this movie was not made by CGI, meaning they really set (controlled) fire to all those trees, destroying not only the trees, but also all the wildlife that makes those trees their homes, and why? Just so they could make a movie!😡 Anyway, rant over. Thanks for the upload.❤
