Considered by some to be the greatest moderniser of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie is also the man who let his people starve to death during several major famines. The story of Selassie, who was overthrown in a 1974 coup, was consigned to the dustbin of history for years before renewed interest in 2019. Our reporters retraced his controversial legacy.

Exactly! and they looted the Congo so much that it created a whole rubber industry for Europe. They still consider small hand shaped chocolates a snack. They are shaped like hands because the Belgians would chop off their hands if the Congolese didn't bring them certain amount of rubber.

I am Eritrean. My grandfather is 102. I grew up being told that it was a great time during Haile Slassie, without undermining any challenges or mistakes that existed at the time. We can not judge a 60 year old leadership based on current period. All must be seen in the context of its time. My narrative and understanding will never be broken by the European neo-liberal colonialists. History must be told by the very people who own the history. Haile Slassie promoted Education and awarded so many scholarships at the time. Education was one of the best in his time. The decolonization of the mind is required.

France's corrupt leader, along with the UN/Nato forces , Hillery and Obama , undermined and overthrew Gadaffi, of whom might have been thought a terrorist dictator, but had renounced terrorism, shook Obama's hand, and got backstabbed for being more open with European countries. Some of the things that did not make the news previously were than Gadaffi (not sure of the correct spelling as I have seen his name spelled several different ways) ... preferred living simply , even in a tent, over having a massive, ornate palace, used oil revenues to grant government services to his people (unlike other always will fail socialist schemes), upgraded the land with a network of efficient canals, was going to mint gold coins for a monetary standard, and sought as a goal, to bring the living standards for all of Africa to be raised up.

@Joe Blow Because Monarchies is still revered in many of Africa’s nations. You are just a white westerner who don’t understand the traditions of the ethnic groups of Africa. Racism through imperialism/colonialism and western ideologies destroyed Africa’s traditional institutions that should have been kept. You only hate monarchy because you are in the West. The West may not want its monarch’s anymore but African Civilisation and Southeast Asian Nations say otherwise.
@haimi703

I agree with Joe that there should no longer be monarchies in this day and age. As an Ethiopian, I agree with Hile Selassie when we pushed towards catching up with the times. DEMOCRACY is important!!!! He had to fight with the Nobality in order to educate his people, that is what monarchy does, keep people down so the ritch and powerful are the only once in charge. As we say in the 21st century, "no taxation without representation"!!!!!

There's a UN Declaration in the Rights of Peasants (UNDROP)that passed in 2018. A peasant is not quite the same as a farmer, it specifically means small-scale or subsistence farmers who are often tenants of landlords. It's also the official translation of the Spanish word "campesina". In India the term peasant is often used in English without any negative connotation. There's an International Peasants Movement that proudly use that name. I think it's just in the West where there are traditional peasantry anymore that the word is derogatory.

This is Psalms 83: 4 at work . If he wanted death for the people then why did he prepare Ethiopia for the fight against Mussolini ? We the Diaspora recognize the purpose of the coup that was against HIM . And something I find VERY strange is that HIM was aware of this and continued to stay humble . 😔

For those being critical of this video (western media), as Africans, we shouldn't minimize the story of the people in this video either. They are sharing the man-caused famine they personally went through. We can't just deny this just because it's a western media. Yes, we should always be critical of who made the video, but we should also take the stories of native/ genuine people into consideration as well.

The Hotel was sighted on Grosvenor Square adjacent to the US Embassy. It was attacked by the PLO who had their sights on the EL AL Israeli cabin crew that frequently resided there. From among many of his contributions; Emperor Haile Selassie did not steal money from the Ethiopian people; Emperor Haaile Selassie did not make Ethiopia land locked, Emperor Haile Selassie did not propagate tribalism and ethnic conflicts. Emperor Haile Selassie did not take land away from the Ethiopian people. Almost all the primary and secondary schools, and the first two Universities in Ethiopia started during Emperor Haile Selassie's time. Emperor Haile Selassie founded the 1st Airline (EAL) in Africa. He founded Harar Military SAcademy; the Ethiopian Navy and The Ethiopian Airforce. At least the airport in Addis and the University, should retain their original name: Haile Selassie Airport; and Haile Selassie University. He was a God fearing inspiring leader for us and humanity by large.

Why do u think majority supported derg when derg killed him ' took over because they where helping for demrocey. Why do u think eritera celebrated in 1993 when it came independent because they never where part of ethiopia. Hailer Selassie brought more nightmare then peace.

That is why they have produced this propaganda piece, pretending to be an unbiased look. They are basically calling H.I.M. a mad man without saying those words. @ Michael Sheakey and I will said it again: what you said its false. Negus Haile Selasie wasn't a rastafari but he was a copte and as such he never considered himself as a god. As an emperor, he doesn't bear any bullshit title such god of gods.

Haile Selassie deliberately suppressed the drought in wollo and Tigray, he also bombed tigray with the support of aircraft from the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force. We will never forget Haile Selassie and his wrong doings.

He does, He experienced it himself! Haile Selassie massacred Eritrean/Tigrayan villages and caused famines in Wollo and Tigray. His Economy also relied on Slaves (Haile Selassie's hypocrisy at best) and Farmers who were being heavily taxed.

Rastafari...Kedusan Girmawi Kedamaw'e Haile Selassie I Jah Almighty First... to H.I.M who be who he be...none before & none after...Ameyn & Ameyn... HalelluYah Sehumi Igziabeher..."Why do the heathen rage & the people imagine a vain thing?...the kings of the earth set themselves...& the rulers take counsel against Igziabeher...& against his anointed saying...Let us break their bands asunder, & cast away their cords from us...He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh...Igziabeher shall have them in derision....Then shall he speak to them in his wrath, & vex them in his sore displeasure...Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion...I will declare the decree: Igziabeher hath saith to me, thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee....Ask of I & I shall give the heathen for thine inheritance, & the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession... Jah shall break them with a rod of iron; Jah shall dash them in pieces like a potters vessel...Be wise now therefore O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth...Serve Igziabeher with fear, & rejoice with trembling...Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, & ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little...Barukh: Blessed R all i & i that put i & i trust in H.I.M...Selah
