For me (1992 kid) gen 7 was the tip of the iceberg. So many great games...HD graphics, online, achievements, DLC (that felt like extra unmissable content rather than parts of a game locked behind a pay wall) discs containing data, ability to play offline. And games that were developed to have a story mode, possibly co-op and a multiplayer mode too...no day one updates before you can play the game or every month...insert disc and play. I think it will truly be the last collectable generation. I can foresee a gaming crash...due to pricing, subscription services and lack of innovation and enthusiasm to create a great game. I think so much could be learnt from generation 7. But corporate greed is consuming the industry and ruining it

Idk bro, I was born in 92’ too. But now in 2024 we got PS5 with great graphics fast ssd with barely any load times. Nintendo has the Switch which is a Wii on crack. And best of all most DLC has been free tgis generation. COD use to have 4 dlc packs at 15$ a price in the 360 days now the just release free dlc🤷🏾 and online is literally at its apex rn.

Gen 7 felt like the true peak of hardware that was a long time coming growing up in the 80s and 90s. Playing a PS3 in 2007 on an HDMI Trinitron, Dolby digital surround sound, free internet and downloads on the store, wireless controllers, hard drive standard. It was magical. The games took advantage of the hardware and for the first time they didn’t seem to be held back by hardware limitation. Games looked fantastic, textures weren’t blurry it was high def and they ran smooth with little to no slowdown. Now in gen 9 little has changed for the better.

@@soad11dude because most of them were 720 and 1080p and many of the games were 60 fps and the optimization they used then was better but there was less to optimize because of the technical limitations but it still didn't limit the games but everyone has to remember each generation was a huge step up in technology until the last gen and online was new and free

Yeah in general it’s soo funny me and some friends were talking about this just yesterday. This could be the best generation of consoles that hit the market. The jump to ps2 and Xbox was awesome also. But when this generation came out with online play it helped keep our gaming friends together when we moved on to seperate parts of our lives also. Was also the last generation when you didn’t have to wait months for a game patch to fix a broken 70.00 release

Truly the last time the gaming industry as a whole made an attempt to be innovative and really push the boundaries. I was born in 91 so I may be slightly biased over some of the older gens, but holy shit gen 7 was the glory days. I remember being blown away by new releases and now it feels like more of the same. I’m never pressed to buy a game day one anymore, even if it’s not completely broken at launch (fantasy logic, cause it will be broken) it’s still just derivative of another game I’ve played countless times before. How many times can the gaming industry tweak and reskin the assassins creed format before people get sick of it?! This turned into an old man yelling at the sky rant lol

Thanks for the great Video Chaps! I'm an old 43-year-old Dude that's been playing since the Nes. I remember getting an Xbox 360 just to play Black Ops and Halo with my friends during that era. i have some strange nostalgia for the 7th generation that reminds me of the Nes which is very strange. I did not anticipate being so nostalgic and really sad about the 360-game store closure. I think Microsoft is going to do a 360 on their decision to close the store, similar to Sony and the PS3. I recently purchased a Series X just for the backwards compatibility. I know Microsoft doesn't think it's a thing right now, but the ability to play these games at 4k by putting the disc in the console is bad ass! I have a killer gaming PC and I don't need a modern console. But damn that nostalgia is powerful. There's just something about being able to put my OG Xbox discs and 360 discs straight into a console without the need to Conjigger an Emulation Setup.

I guess fairly unpopular, but the Wii was all I needed. It's still hooked up to this day. With all the Virtual Console games from all the consoles I had growing up (minus the PS1 obviously), full gamecube backward compatibility, and being able to play all the disc based Wii games as well as the Wiiware games. I really enjoyed it and the motion controls (even if they didnt always hit a home run, I like the ones that at least tried to do something different). It was, for me, the last time I really "loved" gaming and had fun with it if that makes any sense.

I grew up in gen 8 but I am infatuated with gen 7 at the moment. It was the first gen where certain game genres and design philosophies were set in stone and still haven't left. Been playing ff13 on 360 and if I didn't know any better I'd say it's a ps4 game with how great it looks. I think there's something to be said with the switch being as popular as it is when it has gen 7 specs... seems to me like that was as much graphical fidelity as we ever needed to support the innovation along side it. Now graphical upgrades just seem to be for the sake of itself and not as a more accessible platform for new games and ideas to be created.

I am a 87 baby, so I grew up starting with GEN 3. GEN 7 has my heart, and Halo 3 was absolutely some of the best online gaming if you ask my opinion (simply because of lan party’s!! We use to have a club in Charlotte where 40 people showed up to party at my friends house for the whole weekend!). The COD series was also incredible during GEN 7, but one of my favorite 3rd person online shooters other than Gears of War is Metal Gear Online with MGS4 (absolutely addictive). KillZone 2 was also pretty impressive as well with BattleField 3. The last of Us multiplayer was pretty good too. I wish we could get back to that online gaming spirit from that era, but unfortunately it’s nowhere even close to what it used to be. We hit a flat line in this era fueled by micro transactions and algorithms. Cheers fellas!

If we do hit a crash in the market with gaming..better hope you have physical copies because the digital library is going to screw millions (possibly a billion) people out of there purchases. The sneaker market has gone down hill tremendously which finally hit resellers pretty hard in their lucrative schemes lol so now people are buying shoes they really wanted for cheap steals.

The games, the system, the jump to HD the time in my life where I finally had expendable funds and the nostalgia of it all. Old guy here, still in my 40s but barely and I just picked up a PS3 and about 8 games yesterday. I have to say the joy of playing a game without all the distractions for online services, downloads and all that, coupled with very good graphics, instruction manuals with the games and the just "fun" factor that, for me, is pretty much gone in gen 8 and on for the most part, has been wonderful. I am excited to go back and play old favorites and find hidden gems or other titles I missed the first time around.

We have the Series S and a PS5, but I feel like down the road those won't be worth keeping because a lot of it revolves around online. I loved gen 6 because I prefer a normal controller vs having to use the wiimote, but I got rid of the gamecube because my wii plays gamecube games. I also appreciate the fact that any game that uses the wii classic controller seems to be compatible with the gamecube controller.

But the 7th generation reminds me of my early 20s. One of my favorite memories of the 7th generation was the first time walking out into the promenade at the Willamette Mall and hearing Gone Guru blasting through the TV. Gamers seem to put off collecting the games when it's too damn late, then they gripe about what it cost. The day Microsoft announed it was halting production of the Xbox 360 consoles, I went out that evening & bought two brand new Xbox 360 E consoles, both with 500GB hard drives, for only $250 each. Then over the next year or so I actively searched for the 300 plus Xbox 360 games I cherish today. Games were often $5 to $15 each complete & clean all day long then.

We've seen it all at this point in gaming. On top of that, in terms of AAA, publishers have become more risk averse, leading to certain genres and subgenres falling by the wayside (i.e arcade sports as you guys mentioned).

For me the 7th Generation never really ended... Most of my Xbox One library is backwards compatible 360 games that I have on disk or remasters of 360 games. I only have a handful of games that are actually native to the console. I have a lot more Gen 8 games for the PS4, but even then there's a chunk of my library that are just remastered or ported Gen 7 titles. Looking back, it really feels like that was the peak, where the combination of graphics, controls, gameplay, multiplayer, new IPs and just the sheer variety and quality of games all just came together at once.

Good idea. I personally have had great luck over the years. I don't have many secrets except (dusting (Swifter), keeping power strips off always when not in use and covering consoles when not in heavy use. The last one I need to get better at but it really helps. Other than that I think it's just dumb luck.

the last generation of experimentation. Capcom alone released so many different one off titles compared to now where its just RE, MH, SF. Plus its the last true physical first generation. Im still finding games that released during this generation that I didn't know about and I worked at gamestop at the time

It is interesting all 3 consoles sold well so many games can be considered sought after, but only a small amount could be considered rare. While the previous two generations had PS1 and PS2 dominant and the Saturn, Dreamcast and Gamecube selling in far smaller numbers (and meant the games for them more difficult to get). I would also suggest it was the last generation where gaming was the priority - yes you had DVD and Blu-Ray, but the games were selling the console. The PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series seem to be focused on everything such as internet, streaming and gaming is there but as part of a whole package. Which leaves the Switch which prioritises games and is doing well...

I think you guys hit the nail on the frickin head with this topic, I've had several gen 8 and 9 consoles but I repeatedly found myself growing bored of the consoles due to the lack of variety compared to previous gens. Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic titles, but the variety seems a lot more sparse now. I believe it comes down to how expensive it is to develop and publish games now. There isn't as much room to experiment because if a game doesn't sell well, game studios are closed and jobs are lost. Just my two cents, great video as always gentlemen!

Gaming was great for Gen 7, but I think one thing that brought in the masses was the birth of the streaming services (namely Netflix) for consoles before they had Rokus or fire sticks or smart tvs. I remember controlling Netflix with my voice with Xbox 360 Kinect, and feeling like I was brought into the future! It was cool to play a great game and then jump to Netflix right after. Another cool feature of the xbox 360 is that you could plug in your iPod or even your PSP and stream your music into your games!

Gaming since the NES era and totally agree with your arguments of the steps between generations. The least step is imo gen 8 and 9. Feels a little bit like the smartphone evolution. The steps between the first 8-9 iPhones were enormous. Now it’s not that much of a difference. But the step from PS2 to X360: blew my mind. Definitely my fav generation (together with the 16 bit era).

I grew up in the 80s and for me Gen 7 was awesome because I could kick back and game with friends online after work (and I still play with these people to this day). It was the last gen of non-broken games, affordable gaming, and like you said, games play and look like modern games. I love every console from the NES to modern, but Gen 7 was the best!!!

I have been collecting for the PS3 for years as I have a tonne of nostalgia as I used to work in Game in the U.K. (it was like GameStop) I did midnight launches and tonnes of game launches. So that generation has a special place for me. I personally think the 7th gen was the last gen where companies took massive risks. There were obviously a bunch AAA but there were so many games that went under the radar. Also because so many games were coming out every week and so many got overlooked. This is why I love this generation immensely.

I won't budge on that. I will also never forgive Capcom for RE6 either. Old man gripes...

Totally agree with the title and thumbnail, although I'm more biased towards the PS2 era but a hacked gen 7 console is almost an all-in-one device for a given platform. Plus it's the very last generation that actually felt like a proper console where the games are pop in and play.

I think the switch is absolutely worth it. But its a mixed bag. Its important to check if the full game is on cart, if it is functional without updates, and in case of ultimate editions if the DLC is included on cart(unlike pokemon). Its the same with 7th gen games, but much more common on the switch.
@warehousedave7937
@warehousedave7937 Ай бұрын
@@D3sdinova switch games will be cheaper than the Wii got in the years after the console generation ended. But in its case, there were hundreds of games produced as limited / collectible titles and what will happen is only a fraction of them will become standout valuable collectible titles. Will be mostly first party games. So many collectors have invested thousands of dollars into switch games that they think will be valuable in the future and they are going to be severely disappointed. Lots of speculators hoarding copies of games and give it a couple years of no price increase and you'll have hundreds of them give up and release their stock on eBay.

I was born in 93 and totally agree the graphical jump from Gen 5 to Gen 6 was insane. Then the jump from gen 6 to 7 was also insane. The sweat on the player's visible on the sports genre games. The boom of online gaming exploding in schools Halo 3 Reach, The OG CODs, GTA IV graphical jump from San Andreas this gen dare I say had balls too games like world at war, Blitz The Leauge Two. It made gaming a "cool" "in" thing to do talk about at school it was no longer labled at you being a nerd playing video games. The lobbies in all games on gen 7 these kids wouldnt ever survive 😅😂😂

Totally agree with the Gen7 game consoles really being the last to have developers allowed to have innovative ideas and stories for their games like Bayonetta and Lollipop Chainsaw to name a few. Also with a few minor sized updates from time to time the game was entirely on the disc without the need to download and install half or more of it like you had to later on with the later consoles. I also feel that's why retro style games and popularity for the previous gen consoles is on the rise as many gamers are becoming fickle and disillusioned with how the gaming industry is becoming and the big publishers an general from Ubisoft to EA.

Did some speculating yesterday and "overpaid" at GameStop for PS3 versions of Silent Hill HD Collection and Homecoming ($50). I am hoping that the release of a 'new" Silent Hill game at some point makes me look like a genius from grabbing these minty Gen 7 "Gems". Your video today reinforces my positivity about Gen 7. I was very PlayStation centric in the early 2000s but have since finally dipped my toes in the Xbox world. I am looking forward to Wolverine PS5, but still love X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although I own a PS5 and a Switch, my heart truly swells for PS3 and PS2, Been really Vita and PSP focused too. Cheers from Bmore!

Like a lot of people I think we are going to see steep decrease in game develop budgets as people are seeking out indie and retro games for $2 to $40 that are complete. Most people are not willing to spend $60 to $150 for games that need a year of patches along with season and battle passes to get the full experience and story of the game itself, especially in the current economic climate.

Little side idea also being discussed currently (July 2024): Gen 8 is the last handheld generation. Period. I've seen it with my own eyes as a teacher. Kinda around 2016-18 all the kids went from having 3DS's to just phones/tablets with mobile games. Mom/Dad's old (smart) phone as completely supplanted and is the de facto gaming device for children now. With the switch "blending" console and handheld there are going to be no companies to make dedicated handheld video game devices (that aren't just PCs or emulator boxes.)
