The LAST Francis Scott Key bridge collapse truss was finally picked up out of the water of the Patapsco River in Baltimore, MD on June 1, 2024, about 2 months after the MV Dali ship collided with the Key bridge. It was the final bridge piece blocking the 700-foot federal channel down to 400 feet wide.
Jeff Ostroff shows some analysis mixed with videos and photos to explain the process of removing this bridge truss, where it will be taken to Sparrow Point, and how they dismantled it afterward.

I am very impressed with the coordination, efficiency and speed of this demolition process. The combination of the waterway activity and the risk management processes needed at every step of the way has still allowed the teams to show their efficiency in reopening the waterway safely.

Chessy didn't pick up the whole thing. It picked up a very large piece yesterday, but there is still another piece left there that she has to go back for. Also, the piece wasn't just buried in the muck. It was still attached to the roadway, and the roadway was partially stuck in the mud. They had to cut the roadway away in order for Chessy to pick up that large section. They started working on that section two days ago and didn't finish breaking it loose until sometime yesterday morning or early afternoon in Baltimore. She has been parked at the location where they are breaking up the section she picked up yesterday as she holds on to it. I'm not sure how long it's going to take for them to finish cutting that piece up enough for her to let go of it and go back for the last piece.

The Chesapeake 1000 is a shear leg crane. The Weeks 533 is standard crane, able to slew 360 degrees. Many marine cranes are shear legs, as they are able to come right up to what is being lifted, whereas a standard crane on a barge will have a set back of some distance.

Thanks Jeff, Good cleanup job. Lets hope new bridge is beautiful to look at as well as functional, a fitting memorial to what went before. Near where I live a steel truss bridge was recently demolished. To celebrate its long service and the efforts that went into its construction and maintenance a rather nice piece of public art sculpture was made from some of the salvaged steel and placed in a park on the southern approach.

With 500 tons on the hook, you do not want any sway at all. Any lateral load to speak of would have caused the boom to buckle. While the crane is rated at 1000 tons, this may have been a maximum capacity lift we witnessed considering the distance away from the base of the boom that this load was lifted from. Breaking the suction of mud without overloading the equipment would require a steady force barely exceeding the weight of the truss applied over a long period of time. Those who worked on this job deserve much praise.

In the Navy we could use a suicide water hose nozzle to clear mud loose around the truss and keep a strain on the truss with the crane until it breaks loose from the mud suction. Thought job and a well done to all involved.

It's interesting to look at that view of Baltimore Harbor and realize that 175 years ago, this was the biggest slave trading port in America. Thousands of slave ships loaded with slaves came in and out of those waters, headed for the slave market in New Orleans, and bringing slaves in for sale in the eastern slave states. Baltimore was the centre of the slave trade. It's also where slave ships came in from Africa, until that was ended in 1808. The history of Baltimore Harbor is one of the most extreme racism, cruelty, brutality, violence and tragedy indeed. The final cruel irony is that Francis Scott Key, composer of the "Star Spangled Banner", was a slave-owning lawyer who defended slave owners.

This whole process is amazing, but the real amazing thing is that they are doing this in the middle of a shipping channel up to fifty feet deep, with currents. debris and muck many feet deep. On top of all of that they are doing it on floating platforms with divers in the water setting up each move. PS is there some way they could recycle the steel for the new bridge.
