NEW SERIES FOR 2024! Last place & proud of it! Sneak preview first episode. I’m going to be honest here - I’ve reached a stage where I am (in a nice way) non-plussed about elite athletes winning races and setting records. I used to be in awe of these lofty achievements, but I have a lot more in common with and even more awe for the people in the middle of the pack, the back of the pack, and the person who comes LAST OF ALL. So this new series celebrates the ‘normal’ ultra runners who come last in some of the UK’s most famous races and are quite rightly, very proud of their amazing achievement. Just like us, these unsung heroes have busy stressful lives filled with jobs, kids/pets/relatives, mental and/or physical health issues and injuries. Their training and racing has great highs and terrible lows, but they keep on running/jogging/walking/crawling to that finish line. What did it take? What was their training like? How did the race pan out? How did they beat those cut offs against all odds? And what hard-won golden nuggets of advice can they give to us ‘normal’ ultra runners about this race, ultra running and life in general.
This episode we speak to the fantastic Lizzie Hughes about her last place on the infamous Arc of Attrition 50 2023, which I am signed up for 27 Jan 2024. I may be the next last place person the way my training has been going! ;) So I need all the help from Lizzie that I can get, and maybe you do too for your next ultra whichever if might be.

Wow, great idea this new series. As a mid- and backpacker myself, and occasional racevolunteer, I am always very inspired by the last finishers in ultras. The fast runners can't imagine how hard it is to have the cut-off chasing you and being out there two or three times as long as them. True heroes!

If you are last you have beaten everyone that dropped out, which in the case of the Arc is a lot !! Congratulations

This is a great idea and really enjoyed this interview. Last is never really last is it as you said. There are all the people that didn't finish, didn't start, didn't even think of doing something so demanding. After having the fear of being last, I can say from experience that it's actually really fun and my experience was that I was made to feel special.

Well done Lizzie! Great interview 👏 I was a DNS for Arc 50 this year after breaking my elbow 10 days before 🤦‍♀️ But I’m lining up for it in 2024 and can’t wait! Always great to hear experiences from mid-back of the pack and especially other mums taking on these challenges 😊 See you there Claire!

Hmm, a bivvy bag and whistle are pretty much standard kit for all ultras in New Zealand. I even carry mine on training runs cos you never know (and I just never take them out of my pack).
