Nomadic Farmer, Jim Kovaleski had some extra time before migrating back to Maine, so he came by to help scythe our Syntropic System. Spring rains and warm weather have caused tons of new growth in the system, including the grass! You guys already know, Jim shared many Scything Pro-Tips during the process. Enjoy this video with Jim; the next time we see him will probably be up in Maine, so stay tuned!

My gramma doesn't do no-till , in fact, she handles a big ( walk behind ) tiller a few times every spring/summer, but at 86 she's still living alone out in the country. Near other family tho, so they plow her driveway in winter and are around for emergencies, but she still mows her large yard, grows some veg and tends several flower gardens. She had always been an extremely healthy & sturdy person tho, aside from a childhood illness, case of breast cancer or maybe cancer, I forget, in her 60s and one ear hasn't been hearing for several years now and arthritis keeps her from doing some things she used to, like making homemade buns.

I know I'm 2 years too late, but I wanted to say, we also have a guardian cane corso, and she is amazing at keeping our flocks safe. She's not outside full time, but she's trained to the word "coop" and hightails it down to the coop to combat whatever is down there. Foxes, coyotes, aggressive male rabbits (seriously...). I would get another cane corso in a heartbeat. It was an adoption that just worked out to be an amazing farm dog.

THANK-YOU !!!!!!! For pointing out so clearly, that homeowners, HOAs, golf courses etc. are ALSO ( and in some areas, the MAIN CULPRITS ) in polluting waterways ! NOT ( or not only ) conventional ag ! As much as I dislike most everything about conventional ag, I very much hate them being over-blamed for everything !!!! As a former dairy farmer this means a lot to me. Now I'm barely a homesteader currently ( am moving again) but learning more every year about ways to farm at various sizes in a permaculture &/or regenerative fashion. But also want folks to know that "family owned" vrs a "corporation" is a often a very stupid distinction - some family farms I knew incl. my dad's, were/are set up as a corporation & plenty of very, very big farms are owned and operated by a single nuclear family. Then, big vrs. small does NOT mean very much, either, in what they do or don't do. Small, seemingly traditional ( no new, modern stuff ) farms can do awful practices, and big, shiny, conventional ones can do a lot very decently. Don't assume, don't fall for the commonplace stereotypes and vernacular.

About starting that new grass, probably the best way to do it effectively would be to till what you have now and then water it with a timer before coming back with a propane torch and flaming all the seedlings that you germinate. Then sew your new grass. Alternatively you could water heavily and tarp the old grass. In your hot summer a clear tarp with solar eyes everything rather quickly.. Either of those methods would give you a stale seed bed so your new grass would not have weed competition.

Jim cuts grass like I was taught to paddle a kayak. It's all in the shoulders and waist, not in the "Manly Man" arms. Two years ago a neighbor called Code Enforcement on me after I killed my lawn and put in a drought tolerant and some edibles landscape. The Code Officer came out and we talked for a good hour about permaculture and food forests. Sadly, all I have is a total of .1 acre of garden space.

Of course! We Austrians mow our meadows in the Alps with scythes. Many slopes are so steep you have to kneel on the side of the hill while mowing. In fact if you are not trained it is easier to mow a slight slope, cause gravity helps with the weight of the grass.

Chips are always good, but the grass is more sustainable for this system. We might end up using chips if we cull the clumping grasses to plant annuals..
