I was born in Hawaii and lived in Mayor Wrights Housing for the first 8 years of my life, then moved to California back in ‘07. As a kid, those were the best moments of my life because the neighborhood was just a complete playground with all the kids and young teens. Whole lot of gang violence, killings, mainly a bloods hood. I even got the chance meet Dog the Bounty Hunter and his wife(RIP) and team when I was kid because they were going after one of my older brothers friends dad for drugs. Was one of those small kids they interacted with in the episode when they visited MWH. Btw they got the best Manapua man 😂😂

Thanks for the video. Many sweet memories. I went shopping with my grandparents in China Town's open market. There was a vendor that would always give me a piece of char siu to snack on. I knew many good families in Mayor Wright's and down town. Lots of good places to eat. I don't frequent the area as I did when I was younger, but this video brought back many wonderful memories.

Used to work at the State Capitol which is adjacent to Hotel Street, King and all the areas crossing through Chinatown. Best local markets and eateries in the city. But I didn’t hang out there at night unless it was with some of the local soup kitchens or other groups servicing folks experiencing homelessness. But that’s only because I am a gal. I had a few university friends at Mayor Wright and they worked so hard w/school, job and caring for younger siblings. Some super sweet people in that mini-community and I miss those days a lot. ❤

I use to live right across Mayor Wright Housing on Pua Lane. I was there between 2000 and 2006. Saw some crimes. But nothing severe. Mostly car break ins. I also use to work in Waikiki, so I had to go through MWH to catch The Bus. And vice versa when I came home. I guess I was just lucky af, because nothing ever happened to me. Maybe attending Maumakapili church helped me out...just maybe.

Thanks for this video. I’m thinking of buying a place in Honolulu. Would you say that these areas you are driving through are ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’?
@truthfilledtrajectorychant9200

Thank you. No, they are not safe. Definitely, you don’t want to be an outsider in these areas. Just to further that point, moving to Honolulu in general is like moving to a different country, instead of a different state. You want to know local culture very well before moving to Hawaii. I wish you luck on your move. It’s very expensive here - I’m sure you know that.

It's completely safe unless you go to the project housings which I'm sure is "unsafe" in every state. I'm from Maui and I've been to Oahu many times and never got an unsafe vibe. When I was 13 we would walk around at night and find people to buy us alcohol or cigarettes or score some weed. There are so many cops in the tourist/shopping area that there's very little to worry about.

Thank you Brother. People say that these homeless are sent over from the mainland, but I have a hard time believing that many of these people could successfully get through security and sit on plane for a minimum of 5 hours. Most of them are insane, and a lot of them are hooked on drugs. I think a lot of the homelessness has to do with the high cost of living here and the drug problem.

@@truthfilledtrajectorychant9200 it's actually a real issue about other states sending their homeless. But they have a vetting system on who can be sent. Going to Proof after a show. Met a bunch of local friends while I was in and once I got out I just roomed with one of them until I got with my girl. I love Hawaii and specifically HNL, but its definitely not as sweet as my mainland homies think. I found that out when I first came here too. Recently had a friend come visit from NC who had never been. Stayed with me at our house over by KPT. If you know, you know. Man got himself an education in the real honolulu real quick.

There are things you may not be factoring in though. Food is almost double then on the mainland. People often last 6 months here. Jobs pay less here then on the mainland. No offense, but culturally, locals don’t really like people from California and the mainland in general. Hawaii is it’s own culture really. So, it’s not that catering toward newcomers here. Which makes it hard if you don’t have family. Just things to consider. The reality of hawaii is, it’s a nice place, but for the rich. I was literally trying to mirage into the freeway, and some local legit stopped traffic to let me go through his lane. Out here people be so rude, cutting people off, demanding. You go out there. And no one is in a rush! It’s so beautiful. No ones rude! It was something I definitely can’t describe! I hope when I grow old. I can spend the rest of my time on that island! Cheers!! 🍻

Hawaii is not all fun and daiquiris in the sun. It's got a real dark side that you can't help but notice when it's in your face. The poverty many Hawaiians endure, a good portion of them native, is outright criminal. But it's by design. This is what the American empire brings to the world.

@@truthfilledtrajectorychant9200 I had a lot of Hawaiin friends in when I was in college in L.A. in the 90s. A lot of them were very conflicted. They missed Hawaii because an ugly metropolis like L.A. can't compete, and yet they knew their islands were being destroyed and had this feeling that they could never go home. It was sad. I remember a lot of my fellow mainlander students were shocked when native Hawaiians expressed a lot of anti US sentiment, but that's because they were ignorant of it. Hawaiians are also Native American people, indigenous, who have been brutalized by empire. This is why I support Hawaiin sovereignty. I don't see why Hawaii has to be used as an outpost of U.S. empire. The Guamanians are in the same kind of situation. American culture and military domination have been catastrophic there as well, and the Marshall Islands, American Samoa, etc. But Americans are not taught about this. They don't know about Bikini Island or about what the Americans and British did at Diego Garcia, taking over the island and kicking out the native people. Americans are poorly educated for a reason.

It's because Hawaiians are mentally lazy. It's the culture stupid. I am 1/4 Hawaiian with Japanese and Chinese mixed in. I saw what was going on and didn't like it. I left the islands in 1953 and graduated from a prestigious university as an electrical engineer. I got poi in the freezer and old Hawaiian music on my music system. I was born and raised in Kalihi and now live in Austin, Texas. I was always a maverick and never follow the herd.
