In this episode, John and Zach discuss hunting during the late season on heavily pressured public land. A lot of times public land can feel over pressured during the late season but there are usually still some really good opportunities during the end of the season. Due to John’s occupation, he has had a lot of time to hunt during the second half of the season targeting mature bucks after the crowds of hunters have hit public land all season. Zach and John discuss the challenges and benefits of late season hunting, how they find un-pressured areas, and their focus on food sources and bedding areas to pattern deer. They also discuss the impact of different weather conditions on their strategy for that given day and how those weather conditions impact deer movement. They also discuss the significance of wind shifts and how they can influence deer movement. They also discuss the challenges of finding fresh sign in lower deer density areas and what buck sign they expect to see in different settings during the late season. Finally, they explain how they both value learning from hunting experiences in different habitats and the importance of making informed theories based on observations and how that helps them stay persistent and confident while hunting.
Topics Include:
-overcoming the frustration of hunting public land after it has already been hit hard all season
-what buck sign to look for during late season hunts and how that may change based off of deer density
-how far mature bucks move in daylight during the late season
-how to adjust to different weather conditions, other than cold and snow to anticipate buck movement
-wind shift bedding and how to capitalize on it

On my last Catskill Mountain hunt of the season I had very foggy/wet weather with very light prevailing wind. I decided to get super aggressive on a bedding area I map scouted at 3,100ft elevation. I figured the bucks would be bedded looking at the open timber below where gun hunters frequently access that bench. I went directly up the steep slope and small rock cliffs to the spot I wanted to access. As soon as I crested onto the bench a mature buck, the largest I saw all season, and another buck stood up out of their beds about 12 yards in front of me. I was able to draw and get a shot on the larger buck at 25 yards, but I hit a branch and my arrow buried into a maple tree. Late season is full of opportunity. I can't wait to chase that buck next bow season.

These guys thoughts on rainy days being “a wash” is the exact opposite of what we think in blacktail country

I don't think we believe that rainy days are a wash. Those conditions open up a lot of different opportunities. The one hold up we have if it is pouring rain, we have to be careful with our cameras. Otherwise we love hunting in the rain!

Anyone notice how much body weight the bucks have put back on during the middle of January... Or since the food is on a minimum they just end up maintaining what ever body weight they have after the rut until things start to green up, weather permitting. Just curious about it since i will be doing my first January bow hunt and my goal is a 200 lb or really close to it buck... Thanks for this one boys, I've picked up some really good info. Also what's your thinking about urban hunting areas during late season would you put any effort into it... Im really on the fence about it 🤔

people still referring to their wife as "old lady" feel like most people have moved past that phrase.

I can only speak from my experiences but the men who refer to their significant other as “ol lady” treat their “ol lady” a lot better than ones that don’t. It’s “ol lady” not “old lady”
