I think it was a tough calculation for the host to decide how to react or respond. I’d have been delighted for him to even mention Charlie - especially if I hadn’t noticed Charlie in the picture. But tv pressure is another animal. No judgement from me.

Probably nothing. SNL in 1980 was not good at all. NBC was seriously considering canceling the show because of how bad Jean Doumanian was doing in running the show: hardly any of the sketches were funny and not even Weekend Update was up to par. Fridays (that knockoff show on ABC) was doing better than SNL. While Eddie Murphy's stand-up piece on the Ray Sharkey episode did provide some glimmering hope, it wouldn't be until Charles Rocket said the "f" word and the fallout from it that SNL had to be rebuilt and Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo proved that they were the only ones that could carry the show...until 1984.

It's almost as if Eddie still doesn't grasp how big of a star he is to the rest of us. I really don’t think Eddie has been particularly funny in the last thirty+ years, yet just what he did from the late-70s through 1990 or so is enough to solidify him as a comedy legend and I think he’s always been a good person. The Nutty Professor, Big Momma’s House, and the Halloween movie all sucked ass and he’s never done anything to redeem himself as a comedian since. While I wish we’d gotten some more gems out of him, I don’t actually mind it because, again, he clearly shows that he’s a good person when he talks genuinely like this. Seth dropped the ball a couple times in this interview but Eddie effortlessly filled what could have been awkward space, and as others have pointed out, you could tell that seeing Charlie affected him. I expect the new Beverly Hills Cop movie to bomb but I’m fine with loving the times he was actually funny and respecting that fame and wealth haven’t corrupted him from just being a nice, compassionate man.
@manuginobilisbaldspot2

@@robertdavezac Disagree. I think Eddie's unfairly compared to his own peak. So what would be a HUGE deal for other people, looks underwhelming because apex Eddie might be the funniest comedic actor of all time. He's had funny stuff like Life, Bowfinger, Dolomite Is My Name...but again, he's seen against 48 Hours, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, and Coming To America.

This will never get back to Eddie, and it will almost definitely not get back to Seth, but it's just... Eddie is one of my heroes. I've been listening to him since my friend and I found his cassette tapes in his older brother's collection. Eddie literally taught me how to curse, and I cannot possibly express how much trouble I have gotten into because of him, nor can I remember all of the times I've made people laugh either quoting him or following his storytelling cadence; he's my favorite comedian of all time. I watched both of these clips back-to-back and almost teared up. It's so great seeing him make these kinds of jokes again, and Seth: you did a great job leading this interview; really natural and flowing. Great chime-ins. Making Eddie Murphy laugh, which you did, is one of those things I dream of. Thanks for this. It's trite, and I know it's just your job, but for some people (like me), it's really touching. I am 62 and get all of these references. I saw Yul Brenner perform on Broadway in the King & I. They made a movie of it. If you love musical theater - you will enjoy it. 🎉

True story: I was the manager of the Men's Department where Eddie Murphy bought that red suit. The store was called WILD BILLS. I was going to buy it and had it in a bag that I still have till today. The jacket and pants was something I put together as I was about to buy it, but I went to lunch first and while I was gone my assistant manager sold it to Eddy. I was devastated and every time I see that suit, including on In Living Color, I know how much I regret going to lunch. It's depressing till this day.

Cracks me up that he somehow thinks he does not rank up there with the Beatles .. Eddie is a true Hollywood star old school .. and his work raised a generation of kids with a role model they needed , plus he pushed the envelope for stand up comedy too ! He looks amazing ! What a great interview ❤ thank you Seth this was pure joy from start to finish !

I love when Eddie gets excited about a story he's telling (like the Yul Brynner one) and his eyes flash to life and just for a moment you catch a glimpse of the energy that radiated off the man in the 80s. Then "cool Eddie" recomposes himself and continues with the story.

Damnnit. Can’t believe Seth steamrolled over the red suit story!! Eddie said that ‘everyone’s back’ in BHC. I’m anxiously waiting for that wonderful Easter egg that is Damon Wayans once again! What a great summer. Starting off with Ed, partying mid summer with Hagar and Michael Anthony, close it up with Michael Keaton n Beetlejuice!!

I love how at key moments in the interview Seth just hung back and let Eddie have all the time in the world and reminisce; even those couple seconds of silence with such a living legend were golden, almost reverent. A lesser interviewer would have anxiously jumped in to fill the gap but Seth held back and just organically let this giant of comedy have his time and honor us with his presence and amazing stories. Seth, like Eddie, is the best in the biz

Eddie Murphy is absolutely correct when he notes that his rapid rise to stardom intersected with the mega talented, polished stars still from Hollywood's lingering golden era!! Think about it: Brando, Heston, Brenner, Lucille Ball, Poitier, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ali, Pryor, Cosby, Dangerfield and others --- plus he did Carson and they were all enamored with him!!! Side note: I was fortunate enough, while working in radio in Richmond, Virginia, to see Eddie's Raw Tour that came to the old Coliseum in 1986. My co-worker, an account executive, was generous enough to invite me with the second ticket she had. We were like 10th row center! Eddie had the red leather suit on and had us rolling!!! Fantastic!!
