Seth Meyers takes a moment to address some of the errors from this week of Late Night, like messing up the lyrics to Eminem’s "Without Me" before carefully reading a letter from E.B. White.

Hi, librarian here! So many things wrong with the way you handled "the old and precious letter"! But the main problem is that no self-respecting archivist would put a paper letter into a plastic recipient. (it has to be in a non acidic paper folder or cardboard to preserve the paper, and the plastic would damage the ink) Anyway, thanks for the laughs!

That and the gloves. It’s bad enough people think cotton gloves are used or have to be used for everything, I’ve never been told to use rubber/nitrile gloves for _anything_. Granted, I couldn’t end up working in the field due to having to go on disability, but my training was in both historical documents and art, as well as historical objects (most graduates went to work in places where they were often the only archivist, sometimes the curator and archivist combined, so well rounded was the name of the game). I can honestly only remember one time in my volunteering and internships where I had to put on gloves and it was an oil painting.

This is the best audience trolling ever! I worked for a newspaper way back in the day. Retired teachers would clip out articles from the paper and mark all the spelling and grammar in red. Cotton gloves should never be used in a library or archive as the fibers can get caught on the paper and rip it. Another correction for E.B. White (which is unfortunate I guess since it comes about 40 years too late): Charlotte's Web was published in October of 1952 about 6 months before his letter. Granted it could have been a new book about a different spider and pig where once again the spider dies and it just never got published (possibly because it was deemed too similar to his last book?). Anyway if you can relate this to E.B. White's descendants that would be great, especially if it leads to the discovery of an unpublished work. Also hoping corrections did not give you a drinking problem, particularly given that it was originally a journey of self improvement.

Clearly that letter wasn't written by E. B. White because who in his right mind would want to get a jackal out of his life? I think we can all agree White was sane because he couldn't have written such a beautiful story about the friendship between a pig and a spider otherwise. So this letter could not have been written by him. Your correction is only further proof he did not write that letter.

The star symbol "*" is pronounced "asterisk" and not "asterick". Also, the Library of Congress Guideline for wearing gloves when handling historic books and documents states: "Contrary to widespread belief, gloves are not necessarily recommended to handle rare or valuable books. Gloves (nitrile or vinyl) are always recommended if there is reason to suspect a health hazard (e.g., mold, arsenic). Clean gloves (nitrile, vinyl, or lint-free cotton) are also recommended when handling photograph albums/photographs or books with metal or ivory parts. Aside from those specific situations, it is generally preferable to handle your books with clean hands, washed with soap and thoroughly dried, rather than with gloves.”

I find it fascinating how E.B. White was able to type such a tiny note! That was definitely no consumer typewriter, perhaps my comment last week about him being able to predict the future of typewriters with buttons holds some merit. I am starting to wonder if E.B. had some sort of side business designing and prototyping typewriters that were far ahead of their time!

From Wikipedia: "Elwyn Brooks White (July 11, 1899 - October 1, 1985)[1] was an American writer. He was the author of several highly popular books for children, including Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte's Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). He was also a visionary typewriter designer who foresaw the development of the personal computer. He has been called the Tesla of typewriters."

CORRECTION on CORRECTIONS: Seth said that in Germany you say all the letters. German actually has some silent letters, though they are not that common (eg. words ending in 'ie' will usually just say the 'e', such as 'die Zeremonie', in 'Stuhl' the 'h' is silent, and in 'Bier' you just pronounce the long e).

Correction: this can't be from a Cornell library because the Cornell old manuscripts librarians don't have you use gloves, but rather just wash your hands and handle the paper gently, because you're apparently less likely to damage it that way since you can feel things easier without gloves. I actually Googled it to fact-check myself (just in case) and apparently it's actually a huge debate whether to wear gloves or not. And either way, the debate is on white cloth gloves versus no gloves - latex gloves is a whole other nightmare that I'm sure would give the actual Cornell librarians an aneurysm

"E.B. White suffered from anxiety that began in childhood. He described himself as 'frightened but not unhappy … I lacked for nothing except confidence.'" I can clearly see that anxiety as he writes letter after letter in fear of being judged for his mistakes. He layers it beneath feigned confidence, but he's on the verge... I can only imagine he'll soon crack, and should that be captured in yet another unearthed letter... man oh man.

Corrections is really a brilliant way of baiting the jackals to leave comments, thereby ranking the video higher. Sort of similar to how some YT creators ask people to comment with information they could have looked up faster themselves, but on a far higher level. I also find it very relaxing with the slow pacing and mostly topics that does not trigger negative emotions in the way real news topics can.

Absolutely keeping up in classic E.B. style. The progression of E.B. White’s correspondence with Kay is indicative of his many personal letters to people during that timeframe. As a scholar that has poured through the E.B. White Collection housed at Cornell, this non-signing of follow up correspondence proves my thesis that: E.B would never sign his name to anything that he wasn’t 100% sure was the correct decision. He absolutely wouldn’t sign rare corrections letters. E.B. was so concerned about how society and culture would view his writings (a concept in literature and art known as ‘Noble Intent’ or ‘Noble Intention’). This made sure that nobody (jackals included) could criticize his personal correspondences, or anything else he wrote for that matter. A concept known as ‘plausible deniability’. Fucking brilliant Seth! Keep the letters coming, if there are anymore? This just shows the lighter side of E.B. White, and not the stuffy *The Elements of Style* E.B. Bravo, for unearthing these lost E.B. White treasures. Keep them coming!
