I can verify that I just did this exact visa scenario. I applied for the Thai e-visa which was approved for 60 days. One week or so after I arrived in Pattaya, I extended my visa for an additional 30 days. The Thai embassy will send you an approval email with the official document you can print out and show the immigration officer at the airport upon arrival. You may also show it digitally to the officer as well, this is what I did. I do recommend you print it though, just as a backup. I used the “Key Visa” service near Big C and was asked to provide the e-mail document showing my e-visa approval for processing the extension. I simply forwarded the email to the address provided by the staff and received confirmation of their receipt of said documents within minutes. I stayed in Thailand from April 2024 to July 2024. I just flew back home 4 days ago on 3 July 2024. The website is accurate, and the process is easy once you’ve gathered all your documents and completed the online form on the Thai embassy website. Anyone with good sense can do it.

As per a few of the other comments that have been posted you can apply online for a tourist visa which is all done online from your own country and there is no requirement to send off your passport. I did this last year and received a confirmation email from the Thai embassy in London within a few days. It's an e-visa valid for up to 3 months and allows stays in Thailand for up to 60 days on arrival in Thailand. There's a recommendation which I strongly suggest you do to print the confirmation email to show the immigration officer on arrival. A 30 day extension to the 60 days is an option. I actually applied for the more expensive multi entry tourist visa which is valid for 6 months from the date of issue and also allows the 60 day stay at a time with the option to extend another 30 days. There is however from watching the TNT youtube channel a good chance that the 30 day visa exemption will be extended to 60 days this year for tourists from most countries currently only getting the 30 days.

RE the overstay only being 500B/day and not going to jail, that isn't quite true. Not from personal experience, but as reported on other websites. If, and it is unlikely unless you are a knob or very unlucky, you come to the attention of the authorities with even a 1 day overstay, you will go to immigration detention. They do'nt have a choice, unless there are some serious extenuating circumstances. As reported on TNT and Integrity Legal, especially in the Phuket region, immigration police have been preactively targeting people who have overstayed based upon information from locals. So, run the gauntlet if you wish, but keep your nose clean.

Thanks Trevor another good one. I’m not over there, at least at the moment and this tax thing sounds a bit tricky. I’m living in Australia on an Aged pension. The pension is not too bad and because of our taxation rules I am not subject to tax. Similarly, I have a small amount in Superannuation, which over a period of time increases in value and again not subject to tax. I know you, like myself are not experts on these things but surely it could be possible for someone like myself to come over there, draw a pension and possibly some money from their Superannuation fund and then because they haven’t already paid any tax on their funds, suddenly be subject to tax, which on the face of it would be rather a disincentive.

Like you mentioned - if your pension is already taxed, under the DTA you won't be taxed in Thailand. Problem is for most Australians, under our system, our pensions are tax-free. I paid into my private Superannuation fund (from pre-taxed income over many years), which is taxed within the fund during accumulation stage, to draw a private pension income stream, to be finally free of the tax man and not be reliant on the government to pay me a pension. Now to be slammed with tax in Thailand frankly feels like a kick in the guts and makes cost of living significantly more expensive. I am gutted by the new laws. Some interpret the Aussie DTA with Thailand as pensions being exempt but others state it is not. Government pensions are exempt, that's all. The rest us are screwed. I know there's exemptions and first 150,000 Baht is tax free. But sliding scale makes an average pension going to be about 15% less value in Thailand - a big deal. Throw in a bad exchange rate when currencies fluctuate and in for difficult times for many Aussies. It means I am looking now to get out of Thailand if this kicks in. The thought of having to move around to other countries for the rest of my life to keep under 180 days is ridiculous. For a few years maybe, but very unsettling and costly too. Loophole - yes spend under 6 months in a chosen year, transfer a big amount and then just spend that for maybe the next year or too (if you have spare cash to just sit in a Thai bank earning nothing) but then you lose on higher interest rates back in Oz etc. Phillipines is looking more attractive. And who will remit money to buy a property here? 5 million baht remitted to Thailand to buy a condo for example would attract 35% tax on top, unless you transferred money into Thailand when under 180 days in a year. What a nightmare. Big ticket items forget it. Not worth it.

There seems to be unnecessary confusion over visa's and visa exemption. Tourists arriving from most countries get a 30 day stamp on arrival, this is not a visa, it's visa exemption. This 30 day exemption looks likely to be extended to 60 days at some point in the near future but currently remains at 30 on arrival. The single entry & multi entry tourist e-visa's have been issued by Thai embassy's for some time now and allow stays of up to 60 days duration on arrival. I successfully applied in the UK for the multi entry e-visa last year and as per the previous comment you receive confirmation by email which they recommend you print to show to immigration on arrival and you get a 60 day stamp in your passport. So just to recap the 30 days you normally get on arrival isn't any kind of visa but visa exemption, many people confusingly seem to think it's a visa which it isn't.

If Thailand's tax rate is higher than your home country tax rate then will you be liable to pay the difference in Thailand? That question is often speculated on but seldom answered directly. Also is there a difference between government pensions and work pensions? Finally, even if you won't end up paying any tax are you still obligated to get a tax ID and submit a tax form? In my case I am here on a pensioner LTR visa which supposedly exempts us from taxes on any money brought into the country. Do the new rules change any of that? I'll have to see the income tax form to see if there is anywhere that allows me to indicate my pensioner LTR visa status.

If you apply at an embassy, you can get a single entry for 60 days, this has been in effect for years (requires certain paper work). The multi allows multiple single entries for a period of 6 months (you can extend 30, but then have to leave and reenter for another 60 days) - this requires even more paperwork. One difference between the two is the single you have 90 days to enter Thailand whereas the multi starts the day they issue it. I've been getting the single and extending for another 30 (although I don't stay the full 30). The single entry is not the same as Visa exemption which is now 30 days, but may become 60 days.

Hi! Trevor, Thank you for another excellent video presentation. My understanding regarding the visa is you can get 60 days if you apply at the embassy in your country before arriving and then extend for another 30 days at immigration afterwards. This rule has been there all the time and not changed. The rule does not apply for visa on arrival as yet. At the moment Visa on arrival gets you 30 days and another 30 days at immigration. I used the above rule a few years back with no problem. Hope I am correct. Wish you a lovely day, take care and stay safe. Cheers!!! Dino

There is a visa exemption for tourists from certain countries. This should be extended from 30 to 60 days. However, the authorities are still not implementing it. This is not to be confused with the TR visa for 60 days, which anyone can apply for online at the embassy in a complex process for around 1,400 baht fee. , , An open word - why broach this topic and confuse your viewers if you don't have the appropriate knowledge? How are they going to find non-tax payers? Easy. What is the criterion for tax liability...more than 180 days in the country. When you enter or leave Thailand your biometrics are taken, fingerprints and photos. It isn't really hard to determine if you have been in the country for more than 180 days in a calendar year. Given that, you must do a 90 day report and renew your visa every year. What makes you think immigration won't have a marker to say 'tax resident'? Then, and this is not from me, but from a rep from the Thai Revenue Department, if you are obliged to do a tax return as you have been identified, the onus is on you to show that you are not liable for tax in Thailand. All this is not personal opinion, it is information from very reliable sources, including a seminar in Hua Hin 3 months ago where officials from the Thai Revenue Department were guest speakers.
