I learn a lot by watching you work. The viewers can always fast forward through material they don't want to watch. We can't watch it if you edit it out. I finally got my lathe motor back after 9 months and have been filling the chip pan since. You techniques have been helpful on making my wood lathe. Pulleys, spindles, tailstock... all sounding somewhat familiar...

Thats really sweet to watch Max. Free hand turning is a real skill and great to watch. Had a bloke in a shop I worked in who could free hand internal and external radii and 45's free hand and they where perfect. Mind you he spent 25 years on that machine (big Mazak) and no one else was allowed to touch it. Cam

This was a good one Max. That was a great shot showing you dial in those champers. I know all the metric guys will say, where have you been, well, stuck in imperial land, but during this video I got my calculator out and went 0.04 x 25 = 1. It was a good feeling seeing that 1. G’day Max. Excellent result, I was thinking why not use a button insert for cutting the radius but then you brought out the radius tool, was that a hand ground HSS cutter? Those grey moments are annoying aren’t they but you didn’t edit it out, good on you, we need to embrace our aging moments. Cheers Peter
@swanvalleymachineshop2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter . Yes , just a hound ground bit of HSS . A couple of different button style tool holders is a future dream at the moment , bit like a DRO !!!! Cheers .
@jonsworkshop2 жыл бұрын
Nice job Max, stick with your long format, it's how I go too and is appreciated across the entire experience range. Everyone has their own way of doing things for example, I was paying particular attention to your cross slide inputs when boring, interesting how you back off at the end of every cut then reset immediately (almost like screw cutting), never done that or picked up on it before! Is that something you were taught or something you learnt? Cheers, Jon
@swanvalleymachineshop2 жыл бұрын
Just something i started doing ages ago , mainly only do it with an indicator on finish cuts & use the dial increments on roughing cuts to save dragging the tool back across the bore . It's one of the various methods we use , depending on how we feel on the day !

It's coming along great, Max 😊👍. Maybe a dumb question, were you watching the indicator and manually compensating on the cross slide?
@swanvalleymachineshop2 жыл бұрын
No , all Eyeball . Sometimes i will set the londitudinal feed going & hand feed the cross slide and other times both feeds are done by hand at the same time . Just takes a bit of coordination .

Max, when you cooled the part before measuring it _accurately_ you turned it by hand while running coolant on it. Is there a reason you turned the part by hand other than maybe to reduce the amount of coolant sprayed out of the lathe, even at the lowest speed of your lathe? I'm sure you've got a good reason or _you_ wouldn't be doing it that way! ;)
@swanvalleymachineshop2 жыл бұрын
If i turned it on there would be coolant going everywhere , even at a slow speed . The oil to mix the coolant with is expensive , so i try not to waste it .
@bobvines002 жыл бұрын
@@swanvalleymachineshop Thanks. I figured you probably had several good reasons, all related to good common sense! ;)

So what did the "crush" end up being on the bearing seats?

0.01 & 0.02 mm just enough for a light press fit .
