Thank you. I just found your site yesterday. Your are so caring and thorough We live in northern Michigan I Built a new shop in 1993 and it has 9” of high strength concrete floor in it. In the late 1980’s and the 1990’s I bought many New machines from the Military Long Term storage facilities this equipment was from the second world war. I was single at the time and was very busy with engineering and traveling all over for business. Eventually Got married and have a 22, 20 and 15 year son and a 14 year old daughter The 22 year old has 2 years in the schools skill center machine shop. And 2 years in collage for cnc machine shop and programming. These Machines never were wired up yet. Still in cosmoline My Wife is not business orientated at all and sort of discourage our children to get involved in self employment. WE have many machines that weight 9.000-14.000 Lbs Laths, Mills, Drills, Shaper, Horizontal mills, Gear Hobber, Gisholt ABC Bar cutter Turret lathe. Lots more and well over 10,000 Lbs of tooling Drills reamers Taps and Dies up to and over 3 inches. So the Question is Why should there be a hesitation to put these tools to work. One of your early videos is it’s better to learn on manual machines In which I agree. And right now I have a very Nice condition and a great size machine Nc tape lathe ready to purchase and add to this Shop But Sill No Interest All of this is bought and paid for? But My Son He wants New CNC machines Question In today's world why Go in Debt So I Ask All of you Please educate Me and My Children in what We have and potential that they have available to them. How is the business climate to day in this country in Michigan? Any body want to mentor my children and guild them in this? And what about my 14 year old Daughter. IS there any one willing to help her in opening this machine Shop. It took me a long, long, time to pound this through my thick skull. Once I did, I could figure out where certain things were being screwed up by variable settings that had been changed by people on other shifts. There's a special hell for machinists that diddle with machine / tool parameters and variables without putting them back when they're done, or telling anyone they did.

I helped with friends Mazak set up, it seems to depend on parameter settings whether it uses tool data or offset or both. Thanks for very informative videos Peter.

@Edge Precision Hi Peter, thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! It has been super helpful to me. I have finally gotten my Mazak Integrex 200SY fixed! (1999 model year with Fusion 640mt control) I am trying to find the right cad/cam software to run it. Over the years I have seen you use Esprit and Master Cam, as I recall. I have used Fusion 360 before so I am leaning that way, but I thought I should ask for your thoughts on software before I take the jump. FWIW, I am a full-time pastor and part-time machinist, so cost is more of a factor than it is for most because I do not use my machines all the time. Thanks again for all the learning you have shared with the youtube community over the years. God bless... Mark

software you have in your mazak machine .. mazatrol programming . you can do most normal turning very easily and quickly in mazatrol and it is easy and quick to correct plus you don't have to think about compensating, mazatrol does it if you only choose to drive (eia/iso) on the machine you must be sure of setting up in the machine is exactly the same as in cam .. whether you use mastercam or something else is not a problem it is what the postprossor writes that is important ..I didn't see it was Intergrex sorry what Peter makes are small series which are very complicated. there I would also choose cad cam. if you drive large series and have to correct a bit all the time in the morning when the machine is cold and during the day mazatrol is light and fast .. there are many things that come into play whether you have to choose cad cam or mazatrol you can also run both if You want

Mark I did a while ago investigate into using Fusion 360. But there was no good post back then. Now I have had people message me that there is something now. At the time I was looking into this the Fusion people didn't make posts for machines (I don't know if this is still true). So you had to go to a outside source for this, and of course pay for that. All other Cam software's are sort of expensive so I don't know. Also there are subscription or maintenance costs. With my Esprit this costs around $5000.00 a year (I no longer maintain mine). But I will say if you are running a business their support is very good and if you are doing very complex machining it is worth it to get a solution to you problem quickly. Instead of spending a lot of time and still have to do some kind of workarounds. With Esprit they provide a accurate model of your machine for simulation and will work on your particular post to output code exactly the way you want. Auto Desk may also make better options for programming a mill turn type of machine. But you are going to pay a yearly subscription. So the short answer is, there is no inexpensive option. If you don't do real complicated stuff. It may be better to just use the Mazatrol conversational format. Unless you need some unusual machine movements. The guys here at Center-Line can do some amazing things with just the Mazatrol.

I’ve watched your lathe tool tip radius offset videos and I still have a few questions on the tool data at the integrex. Specifically, if I am using one tool in multiple orientations in the milling spindle (oriented at 0 degrees for od turning on the front side and 180 degrees for turning on the back side as well as turning with multiple b axis angles) how to I manage that data in the controller? Do I need to create a new version of the tool for every orientation of the b axis and front side and back side turning? Will I need to build the same tools version in esprit? From the looks of your tool data page, it looks like the answer is yes but I’m a bit confused when it comes to the A B C D E…. orientation and how esprit determines what the alphabetic cut direction designation is generated.

Yes you will define a separate tool for each orientation. Just like you are saying with A,B,C so on like you said. Now in a g-code you just change to that tool with a M6. So for tool say 2B that would be T2.01 M6 (Esprit should put this in the code if you also use a different tool with the correct orientation in Esprit). And yes you have to build a simulation model (adaptive holder) for each tool in Esprit for the simulation. This could be the same one you just have to rotate the adaptive holder and redefine the inserts location for the rotated location and change the spindle rotation direction. Hope that helps.

Hey Peter, normal I use G41/G42 on my ST25Y with the R (Rad. Geometry) and T (Tip Direction ), e.g. R 0.8 and T 3. without the CAM - Center Tip option. What if I use Center Tip option (CAM) in combination with G41/G42, should I leave the Geometry R-value in the table to zero (0) and only use the Wear, because the CAM did the X-Z-R-calculation already, Haas and Fanuc have the Geometry table you showed as 2nd table.

I'm not totally sure what you are asking. Are you combining a manually written program with a Cam processed program? If so everything thing has to match if you are using the same tool offset to do both operations. You could assign two different offsets on the same tool. So it is possible to on each offset to have a different tip comp direction but you are actually doing everything with the same tool. But if you do this you need to be careful to touch off each offset at the machine correctly and to call the offset in your program when it is needed. Your Cam software should be able to define the tool the same way as your manual program. That would probably be the best way. You can of course use wear offsets to compensate for these things. But I don't really recommend that kind of thing because if a lot of time goes by and you have to do the same job again. You would have to remember what you did. So if someone else runs the program they won't know this. (You could also put notes in the beginning of the program to remind you). So mistakes could be made. It would be better to try to standardize the way you program and touch off tools for all programming to avoid this kind of thing. As I said in this video I don't ever use the 0 or 9 comp direction for tip comp. Because those aren't the way you touch off tools, either with a tool setter or manually.

@@EdgePrecision I use manual program and CAM but never use the Center-Tip option in CAM because it gives strange G-code numbers for X, Z and R, the other options just give X-diameter, Z-length and radius just like the CAD-drawing, the cnc-control in combination with G41/G42 doing the math for me. Probably it's a fault in the Postprocessor, X and Z should always match with the CAD length and diameter. Btw, I use multiple Offsets on the same tool when I do long shafts, e.g. just call for T0220, T0221 etc. for T02 in this case. Our lathes ( Haas /Fanuc) only have the 1 - 8 tip directions, not 0 or 9 Center-Tip.

Makes the angel of the tool no difference to g42 or g41 because the radius of the tool starts at a different point if the angle is 120 degrees on a od g42 tool or ??

What software do you use to program your mazak integrex by the way? Also what software would you recommend me to learn myself? I run a 650 mazak integrex myself but I'm a conversational machinist only right now, but I want to learn a CAM software so I can start programming in that besides only using mazatrol

I use Esprit Cam. At the time it was the best for the Mazak Integrex. But now there are many softwares that can do it. Esprit is expensive and may not be the best option there is now.

peter how would you program that contour if you had to do it manually .. the contour is important .. just want to see if you want to do it like i want to do,,,, the 1-9 numbers are only active if you drive with G42 G42 (G40) in the program? ? Or am I wrong about it

In turning the compensated quadrants (1-9) are only active when tip compensation is being applied G41, G42. So you are correct with that. When I program my little Haas lathe in my garage. I almost always do it manually. In that case I always program the actual finish dimensions of the part. I use the standard roughing cycles (G71, Rough turn, G70 for the finish of that cycle. Exc.) in the control and tip comp for all the finish passes. The tip comp can be put in the same path as the roughing cycle, G71 it ignores it for the roughing. Then after that you just give a line with G70 N(Start of the contour)to N(End of contour. The feed rate of the finish pass would be in the actual contour. Witch is ignored by the roughing cycle. Because it's feed is in the cycle.) With the finishing tool and it reruns that contour with the finish tool with tip comp. This is a over simplification but you get the idea (Maybe?). You need to look up these cycles in your machines manual. And the grooving cycles. With them you can do 99% of all turning on a CNC lathe. Maybe I should do a video on this kind of programming.
