The Chinese features you were asking about is probably from the mixing of races. Chinese traders have always been visiting the Philippine shores even before the Spanish colonization. 😊

The characters in the past speak old Tagalog (they use deep words ) ..while Klay speaks in modern Tagalog..that's the people there, says "I don't understand what you are saying". It's quite saddening that in the college curriculum Filipino subject is not available na. Usually, our Filipino subject have a mix of old and modern Tagalog

Philippines was a province of Spain for 300 years from 1500 to 1890s. My great grandmother was a Mestiza(pure spanish) and my grandmother fought in World War 2 as a Guerilla against the Japanese army when she was 20 years old when the Japanese Empire invaded Philippines.

Dr. Jose P. Rizal's top one favorite dish was tinola. Aside from tinola, he also eats pancit (found in Chapter 25: Laughter and Tears of 2nd novel El Filibusterismo), champorado (when he was a little boy), monggo soup, foie gras (European food when he was in Paris, France and during his exile in Dapitan now Dapitan City, Zamboanga Del Norte, Philippines), tuyo (dried fish) and others.

Secretly watching this while at work. Also, if a nun came running towards me like that, I would panic too. i think it's cause of my obsession with horror movies like the Conjuring and The Nun 😅 the series definitely gets better as each episode progresses. Also, I read the whole Noli and El Filibusterismo out of curiosity...to be honest, it was hard for me to fully understand everything cause of the old language they used back then😂

@@artesiningart4961 Hi po, I have one of the few the English translation of Noli because I couldn’t get a hold of the Tagalog version here in Canada. I found out later on that the version I got wasn’t the most popular translations because it used a lot of “deep” English words that is not often used, and they forgot to translate some of the Spanish words that I'm not familiar with. It also might be because a lot of the sentences seemed to have been translated literally and some of the sentences doesn’t make sense which loses it’s meaning from the original. I’m planning to buy the other English translated version of Noli with the more popular reviews, even though it’s more expensive. It’s okay because it’s an important part of Philippine history to know. El Filibusterismo was a lot easier for me to understand, but it was translated by a different author. Also, I can relate to Klay because half way through the book, I lost interest but it was only because of the way the book was translated 😅 I'm going to get the other English version.

The Filipino is basically of Malay stock with a sprinkling of Chinese, American, Spanish. Before the Spanish came there were already communities that had Chinese immigrants because they were trading ports. So it is but natural that some Filipinos will have Chinese blood in them. The Chinese way of family structure also heavily influenced the traditional Filipino family structure. The eldest son is called Kuya ("Ko-ya" in Fukien "Ku-ye" in mandarin).

This series is filmed in Ilocos Sur. Some places were still preserved in its Spanish era look. One great example is the Calle Crisologo which I myself would also like to visit on one of my vacations.

Philippines was a very formal society back then. It's nice that the entire show utilizes the high level/ formal way of speaking Tagalog. Insulares, peninsulares, illustrados, and landed gentries. Nicer is the fact that the script combines it with the modern way of speaking Tagalog.

As a speaker of Cebuano (which has more etymologically Spanish words and even cognate Spanish words than Filipino/Tagalog), it's wild how many Spanish words in the show are still actually used to this day albeit not too frequently. Also, Pico y Pala, means a Pick and a Shovel. Must be that the meal was originally served to or was what laborers can afford. Interesting! I learn a lot watching your commentaries.

Chicken neck and wings is only/most of the times served to alipin, dukha or (those poor ppl). That's why Padre Damaso felt insulted. And some says that if a lady has her hair put up or in a bun, she's not available to be courted? (or she already have her beau) but if they leave their hair down it means they are willing to entertain suitors. Maybe that's why Maria Clara has her hair up most of the times.

People in the Philippines during the Spanish period were classified into 4 classes: the Peninsulares (Spaniards born in Spain), the Insulares or Filipinos (Spaniards born in the Philippines), Mestizos (mixed Spanish, Chinese and native) and the Indios (native population). The Peninsulares and Insulares have caucasian looking features, the Mestizos has obviously mixed features similar to the mestizos in Mexico while the Indios have the austronesian features. Furthermore, The Mestizo class is subdivided into two: the Spanish Mestizo and the Chinese Mestizo or what the novel referred to as Sangleys. Spanish Mestizos are mostly engaged in politics and government while Sangleys are more interested in trade & commerce.

I had to say you guys don’t know, but when the people from the 1800s speaks either they speak Spanish or Tagalog. When they speak Tagalog they speak pure somewhat old Tagalog. Which mostly we don’t use now, it’s like talking Shakespeare in England now, vs modern English, clai speaks in really modern Tagalog that’s why they can’t understand most of her words

✌🏼😅 We can or may also argue that Klay is speaking in Filipino (one of the two official, and the codified, national lingua franca, and standard or standardized, national language of the Philippines) and not just Modern Tagalog, which (Filipino) is also de facto, still, and just mostly or almost entirely based of or from the general Modern Tagalog dialect of Manila, Metropolitan Manila Area, Metro Manila, the National Capital Region, or NCR, promoted nationwide and worldwide through our national mass media, compulsory K-12 basic education's Filipino subjects & courses and Filipino as language of instruction in some few other subjects & courses, national literature, national pop media, entertainment, and culture, and national music and its genres, subgenres, and styles like OPM, among others.

Interesting! Here during Spanish times was like this: Pure Native American they found here: Indios. Spanish mixed with Indio: Mestizo. Spanish mixed with African (slaves they brought): Mulatos. Nowadays Dominicans are a mix of all 3: Native American, Spanish and African. Your skin tone and hair texture will depend in how much you have of each.

For the uncolonized native Filipinos, they were called Feroces in contrast with the colonized Indios. Feroces because the Spaniards thought them to be barbaric but they fiercely resisted Spanish colonization for 300 years, seeing the plight of the Indios under Spanish rule

I have Spanish and Chinese heritage on my maternal side.. My great granny was Spanish mestiza and my grandpa was born in China but acquired a Filipino citizenship. There are also Spanish-Chinese, Filipino-Japanese, Filipino-American, Filipino-Indians, and everyone else in between. I have an aunt whose father was Japanese and was a soldier disguised as farmer migrant before the Japanese invasion. We have Amerasians from the time of American occupation in 1898 to the time they dismantled their US bases in the 1990s from American soldiers who just abandoned their children. 😔😪. As a result of our colonial past, Filipinos are more open-minded terms of marrying another race.

Here are the metaphors/meanings behind the 'Tinola' parts being served to the characters: [I solely based this knowledge from what i've learned in 9th grade (pre-pandemic)] Crisostomo Ibarra got the breast part [Tagalog: Pitso] which symbolizes wit and knowledge. Someone who got 'brains', hence getting the juicest (meatiest) part. [If I'm not mistaken, in the novel, Padre Sybila also got the same part Crisostomo have gotten] For the other characters they got Leg/Thigh part which isn't really significant. That part was served to the 'normal' characters. As for Padre Damaso, he got the neck and the wing. Neck symbolizes power over someone [Tagalog: Hawak sa leeg - English: Holds someone by the neck (direct translation)] which means he can easily manipulate things around by using dominance/force. Wings symbolizes pride. [Tagalog: mataas ang tingin sa sarili - English: Above all people; narcissistic]

yes, many of my fellow pinoys have chinese, spanish, filipino mixes from their ancestors.. some still bear the traits strongly, whole some already have very diluted features.. which makes for how a typical filipino looks like presently (as are the features of our actors/actresses). In the 1800's.. the chinese were not yet a prominent nation, so controversialy, in the olden times, with how society was on their sentiments on social classes and social status, and skin color, etc... the chinese weren't looked upon highly (versus the spanish mestizos), and i believe, they were even less in status than the 'indios', who were inthemselves already of 'lower' status than the spanish mestizos. ofcourse, we frown upon any form of racism in the present times.😬
