I really wanted to understand more about Latino culture and this video was a great resource. I'm learning Spanish and alongside the language I want to understand more about the people. I'm not Latino but I definitely identified With a lot of the culture. I'm white but I'm not your typical stiff white guy from the United States.

They seem to be pretty clear that not all Latino groups or people agree with all of these tendencies. However, if you study a culture, you have to make at least some generalizations, understanding that each principle you discover will have many people who disagree within that culture. That's the dilemma of sociology, but if you want to try to understand people, you have to take that risk. It's not racist to assume that if your ancestors were rural Southerners, you may traditionally enjoy some chicken at family get-togethers. That doesn't mean a love of chicken is in your DNA, it just means that your family retains some rural Southern cultural traits. So what? If we note that this cultural tendency is more common among some races/ethnicities than others, we're not being racist. If we condemned it and made it seem inferior, THEN we wander into racist territory. Some commenters have been way too critical here.

This is why its very hard to categorize us on the same bag as a community, because many of those characteristics are latin, no women in my country is expected to behave as Virgin Mary, the are expected to be strong to study hard and be the best i what they do, same as a men, I have see more machismo in the USA and role expectation than in my country. I have never heard " familismo, personalismo, I know no one in my culture who is not expected to change what is not right, achieved it or not is another story. That make us so diverse, appreciate the good effort

As a Catholic, and a very devout young person, I feel like fatalismo is not the way to describe Latinx culture. It is a part of it, but the words, "si Dios quiere" implies a lot more than letting things be. A person with faith trusts in God amidst struggles. I feel like that is where I have personally seen it in myself. But I am only 16 so . . . .

This presents a great challenge for employers and universities seeking to repair the damaging bias of the past. Why can't we either provide color blind financial need based support or provide support in proportion to melanin-based darkness of skin or genotype % from the most persecuted people? I have yet to understand why people who are 100% or very high percentage European Spanish are considered just as much in need of affirmative action and extra support as people who are 100% Native American. The people who are more Native American and/or African often need, and arguably deserve, more help based on historical patterns of oppression.

I wouldn’t think in 2022 anyone would need affirmative action in this day of age. Racial discrimination has been illegal since the civil rights movement.

I'm a Christian Latina. My family is from Nicaragua but I'm the first to be born in the United States in my family. I feel very offended by the fatalismo comment about how parents accept their childrens academic efforts and think there's nothing to be done to help them become star students. If anything Latinos work extremly hard so their children excell academically. My parents came to the U.S.A. so I can grow up to have a fantastic life so no my parents did not accept their lives as young adults and worked extremly hard to get where they are right now in life thanks to God's blessings. If the majority of Latinos believed that there's nothing to be done than their wouldn't be much immigration from Latin America everyday to the U.S. I trust in God's plans for my life and I trust that He has amazing plans in store for me but that doesn't mean I'm just going to be lazy and not work hard in order to achieve those the goals God guided me to have. Saying Latinos=Fatalismo is calling latinos lazy since it's implying latinos just accept whatever situation their in and don't put any effort to progress.

HISPANIC counts anyone that speaks Spanish Natively so that counts Spain, South America, Equatorial Guinea,etc . hispanic is not a race. Neither is Latino. Latino is anyone who speaks a Latin Based language. Latin people are Romans. Latin is not Latino. ALso this means that there is no such thing as a one latino culture as France spain and italy are also latino
@axskylord6461
@axskylord6461 10 жыл бұрын
I think you didn't pay attention to the video, she never said latino/hispanic is a race, actually just a cultural/geographical term. Also there is a Latin culture, the same way there's an Anglo culture despite British, Americans, Australians, South Africans and so on are no the same, but share the same roots. On the other hand I think Latin American is more correct than just Latin because Latin is a term way more broad that encompasses people in other continents.

Latin is used as a demonym for the word Latin American. If you used common sense and understand the context, you wouldn't be having this debate. It's like getting mad at people for calling people from USA "americans". It's not the right term, but again, it is a gentilic for someone from USA. Even us South Americans call americans "americans".

Latin and Latino is the same thing only that in the English language there is no "o" and no "a" at the end of the word. The Latino/Latin culture is the Italian/ Roman culture. You in Latin America have a "Latin American Culture". Everything Latino/Latin be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Roman Italy and not from Spain and not from Latin America. Latino/Latin only refers to a language and to a culture, the Latin Language (Lingua Latina)spoken by the Romans and their Latin Culture (Cultura Latina). Latino/Latin is not a Race, not an ethnicity, not a DNA, not a Skin Color, not a Blood and by the way there is no such a thing is a Latin Music and a Latin Food.

Latin and Latino are the same words same as American and Americano. Please don't try to change Roman History. It's that in English they say "Latin" and don't use the "a" and the "o" at the end to identify if it's male or female. In Italian, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish is "Latino" and "Latina".

I always thought it was the other way around. I speak to people in English first because I wouldn't want them to think that I judged them by their skin color, and then switch if they don't speak it. My Spanish is also very weak, so that doesn't help matters. Should I try Spanish first? I really don't want to make people feel excluded or hurt

You mean Latin American culture? because the Latin/Latino culture is the culture of the real Latins/Latinos: Italians, French. Romanians, Portuguese and Spaniards. Latin/Latino refers only to a language and a culture, the Latin Language (Lingua Latina) spoken by the Romans and their Latin Culture. Latin/Latino It's not a race and it's not an ethnicity, not a DNA, not a Skin Color, not a Food , not Dance and not a Music. It's all an invention of the "Hispanics" of the Americas with the complicity of the panderer U.S. Census Bureau. www.latinsinternational.yolasite.com www.mexica-movement.org

Hey...Spanish speaking people of the "Americas" you are all confused people in search of a common name. I understand that but "Latino/Latina" is not not the name to use for your Race or Ethnicity. Just look yourself in the mirror and identify which Race or mix of Races you want to identify with but Latino is not a Race and is not an Ethnicity and "Hispanic" is not a Race and is not an Ethnicity either. Latino is a Language (Lingua Latina), the language of the Romans,ancient Italians,who introduced this language to Spain during their 700 and plus years of colonization of Spain, called by them "Hispania" in Latin. Latin and Latino is the same word as in American and Americano. In English and French there is no "o' or "a" at the end but it's the same word . You cannot change history just because you want a name for yourself.Latin America is only a geographical location where languages derived from the Latin are spoken. These are the languages spoken in what the French called "Amerique Latine": French.Portuguese and Spanish, all Latin derived languages. The other two Latin languages are: Italian,first and foremost then Romanian. I would like to add that Latino doesn't have anything to do with speaking Spanish or being a mestizo/a either. Don't confuse yourself more. The "Chicana"Professor in this video, like all the others don't know what they're talking about.
@axskylord6461

(1) "your race" is not correct, Latin America is a multi-racial society, there's white, native american, asian, african, middle easterners and many mixed people in there. Also the girl in the video never said Latin is a race but the opposite. (2) It was the french who decided to name it Latin America so they could justify territorial claims in the americas based on common cultural roots. (3) US Americans usually stereotype Latins as Mexican mestizos, which is incorrect, but that will take a lot of effort to educate poor ethnocentric US Americans devoid of culture.
