And when you pointed out how the language allows for so many of those runs and amplifies the melodic value, like, I agree! so this particular performance is a medley of multiple songs the artist (Arijit Singh) has sung and it is arranged to flow together..at most Indian award show performances this is the case, performances are usually medleys of 3-7 songs (sometimes more) and like you said it's about building that atmosphere musically..if you listen closely every time the song changes they show the audience clapping, it's because they recognize that song change! a lot of these songs are just as gorgeous on their own and again, Arijit Singh does not miss musically! All these songs are in Hindi which is one of the most widely spoken languages in India and it is spoken mostly in the north. The other languages you mentioned are southern languages(Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam) and there are even different styles of singing within these languages. I personally don't speak Hindi so same I have no idea what he's saying but I still have so much of Arijit Singh and other Hindi music on my playlists for those melismas and the melodies and its amazing how much I am able to connect to this music without me even UNDERSTANDING the lyrics.. I'm also a major theatre geek hehe my heart was so full when my two fave genres were being discussed in tandem :) About his economic breath control, most singers in India undergo classical training under 1 of 2 schools of classical music training. For your reference, this is somewhat comparable to the training opera singers undergo. It takes years and years and many start very young, I think in Singh's case he started at age 3! These schools of musical theory and technique are called Hindustani and Carnatic and they each have their own frameworks. Again these are north and south-specific. Most northerners are trained in the Hindustani way (as Arijit Singh is) and most in the south are trained in the Carnatic way. There are many similarities and differences between the two styles but ultimately this level of training equips a lot of these singers with a level of understanding of singing and melodies, that is unparalleled.
