In this VladTV flashback, Latto (formerly known as Miss Mulatto) discussed the backlash over her name and the racial implications/history of colorism tied to the term "mulatto." Despite the criticism, Latto said she was looking to encourage light-skinned girls to embrace the skin they were born in.

I’ve followed her since rap game 1. Love her. *yes, mulatto is a derogatory term/ slur. It means half breed. Like a mix between a donkey and a horse. Which gives you a mule. We weren’t even considered ppl bc we were born mixed. We we considered animals. I’m mulatto too. My mother cut me out a news paper article about mulatto kids and the world they would be growing up in and saved it for me in 1984.* along with the book 1984…

I love that my biracial brothers and sisters are speaking up on things like this more, I was also picked on all through school because of my complexion. There hasn’t been a light shined on the hurt both races have caused to us just for being caught in the middle and we don’t even ask for this. I’ve met so many biracial people who are confused and lost on who they are because of America and it’s race war. I play Sam Cooke from time to time hoping he’s right.

It's terrible that so many people have had to deal with that nonsense. I'm bright-skinned, but I wasn't mistreated by other black folks as a kid in NE Ohio in the 80's. But I was in the suburbs in overwhelming majority white schools. That may have encouraged the black students to band together more, especially since we had serious discrimination issues to deal with from white school personnel. In one of the city schools, my cousin (who is a lot darker than me) got jumped for having "good hair." I didn't have any issues from black students in college, either. It wasn't until I went to law school in the South that I got some ignorant comments from some black students. They happened to go to an HBCU for undergrad and/or a predominantly black high school. And I've heard similar comments from some grown adults with that background. I think insular environments like that allow toxic culture to spread unchecked. Same deal with boys' prep schools and private high schools in general. We need a mix of people so we don't become too comfortable with our own BS. And I'm not saying that HBCU's are bad or everyone from them is bad. I know a lot of awesome people from HBCU's. But being too insular is a drawback.
@loki2240
@loki2240 3 жыл бұрын
@Anthony Thompson- I've encountered a lot of "black purists" on KZfaq, but no one ever brought up that nonsense to my face. But some black purists have even claimed a minimum percentage of African ancestry to be considered black. I tried to explain that there aren't separate and distinct races of our species, from a genetic perspective, and that we can't know someone's exact ethnic background and ancestry (especially with holes in record keeping and issues with actual record keeping attempts) and that we can't necessarily tell someone's ancestry by looking at them. But they didn't want to hear it. Same deal with black nationalism, which many black purists buy into. I tried to explain that African Americans are less than 13%, are disproportionately low income, and have little political or economic power. Black purists would make African Americans an even smaller, even less powerful minority group.
@josephreed8765
@josephreed8765 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of things both of you pointed out, I’ve learned every mixed person will have a different experience, but overall most will chose a side, but know how to play the middle. Sometimes the way I see it is, white and black people have hated each other for so long at this point they’ll never notice they created a whole race that’s hurting and has been just as long as slavery. Back then it was terribly physical and oppressive, now a days it’s dissociative identity disorders and confusion. I have a daughter now, so it’s a little somber knowing there’s no real resolution, just have to assuage the situation and put her in as many diverse environments as I can. Honestly being around other mixed people makes me the most comfortable, cause then we can just be ourselves and not change even the slightest because any other races are around.

Yeah but as much as it does effect many Bi Racial Children which in itself is an incorrect terminology, because the Majority of US stem from more that 2 Nationalities BUT as long as They are brought up with a Strong Foundation of Self, and these issues are discussed with Them, things become less Dramatic. Fact is MOST MultiRacial relationships don’t last, so that Child is left to fend for Themselves. One thing I’ve noticed living in Europe is that Many MutiRacial Folks don’t have a MutiRacial Partner. Most Women find a White Man and the Men find a White Women. I believe this comes from the Fact that the Brothers/Fathers have either gone back to the States, live in Germany but have a New Wife and Family and NO contact to the Children, or the Mother, out of spite wouldn’t let the Children have contact to the Father. In any regards, that stability of Family and the Strength or feeling of Black Proud is lost. Also many Germanys disassociate Themselves from Their daughters more than from Their Sons, when They enter a Mixed relationship. And many associate the Black Man with Negativity. The Ignorant part comes from the Hate the Light skinned Children get that have Light skinned Black Parents. Race is Ancestral but Racism is Heretical.✌🏿

Depends on where you are, if the word is in use or not, and how it is used. Where I'm from, the word isn't uncommon and it is just a convenient way of saying mixed black/white. No one gets offended to it because it is just a descriptor and is used as such, even black people use the word when talking about someone who's mixed with black and white.

We all should know that beautiful personality from the heart matters more than racial judgments. When you really love someone that deep it should not matter what color your children come out to be. Building a future and building a family matters than bullshit. Her father really love her mother as a beautiful person. People just have to understand that color is not what brings couples together but it's the personality and the good spirit that brings couples together to make children in all colors.

Then ppl backdoor and say they all mixed with yt, not realizing it’s a difference between admixed and being a quarter more something else. Before the 1 drop rule in America mulatto was a term for generational mixed ppl(like many Dominicans) and first gen bi racial. Dumb American both yt and blk don’t realize u still following the racist yt man 1 drop rule without some type of mixed race term(generational), or it’s still by default just blk. Till this day, anyone still heavily mixed or an offspring of a rapper like latto (being a lil more than a quarter non blk or yt) being a mulatto on the high end mix, is just LIGHTSKIN blk😂. It’s so dumb and hypocritical. Then when ppl choose LIGHTSKIN aka mixed race women, it’s a complaint about colorism. The issue is most those mixed race boxes(it’s was all removed for the 1 drop rule), became just blk. Ppl till this day that’s a quarter non blk to a quarter blk is marked as blk. Mulatto just means blk/yt (u can be generational mixed like many Dominicans) or u can be a mulatto on the high end mixed being from a parent like latto(being 25% non blk or yt). Just like any other word, mulatto was used in a derogatory way by ignorant yt ppl. Doesn’t change the actual meaning of mixed race. Okay!! Now I know WHY Folks are Criticizing Her because of Her name having the same definition as the N word, BECAUSE She doesn’t even know the meaning of the word. It doesn’t NOR has it EVER meant that. I suppose many don’t know what the N word depicted? It was used to describe the Negroe as being lazy and good for Nothing. The term or word Mulatto was a Classification of People based on the Hue of their skin or the fact of them being in a MultiRacial relationship or having MultiRacial Parents. The Majority of South America still use it Today. On the Census form it states, Black, White, Mulatto, because the Majority of them have African roots. So because they aren’t either of the above They define themselves as such. It’s not a derogatory term. It simply means mixed, as does AfroAmerican. My question is WHY are Folks so upset about Her calling Herself Mixed/Mulatto, which she is, BUT NOBODY’S concerned with the Rappers using NIGGAS or Folks calling Each Other the N word in Public? See that’s what happens when You take Someone’s word for something INSTEAD of doing the Research. Google Countries where Mulatto is used, and Educate Yourselves. You will be surprised with the Logic of how the word came to be, but more importantly is that even Today many are Proud to be called this word and don’t see it as derogatory. Do You know what Creole means and why They don’t feel insulted?

I highly prefer the newer version of "LATTO". It is much more9 subliminali than her previou handle. I must also say that after viewing this video-interview with VLAD, Miss LATTO has definitely earned my respect. Her honest transparency on this clip assures me that she definitely does, by definition, have the God-given RIGHT to call herself "mulatto".. MULATTO is an ancient terminoligy that denotes 50% white and 50% black lineage The word is historic, and It is abbreviated here as MGSZ; = mulatto, griffe, sacatra, & zambo!. Which are 50%,25%,12,5% and 6.25%, respectively.

its etymological origin the word "mulatto" refers to the " mule ", [ 2 ] which is the product of the cross between a mare and a donkey, due to the racialist vision of that time and the subordinate position of the slaves, mostly black, and according to which the donkey was assimilated to the black person and the mare or horse to the white person Mule let that sink in

@Onna Margret On the contrary, young people these days don’t know their own history and are doomed repeat it. That’s why the people that named her were clueless to the original meaning of a word derived from Spanish and Portuguese slave traders. Facts can’t be racist. But racist history can be problematic if we don’t enlighten ourselves.
@Ghostviperz
@Ghostviperz Жыл бұрын
@Onna Margret first off I didn’t invent Spanish and Portuguese second why use the words of slave traders to identify your mom I’m telling you the word is steeped in racism and we should not use it. I’m not giving you an opinion I’m giving you the entomology. Mula means Mule in Spanish go look it up, or google entomology of mulatto. The English dictionary will not have the meaning of a Spanish word or it’s historical context. What’s offensive is people that are completely ignorant of history and they just look silly using completely dehumanizing word to identify themselves. Why use the colonial word when biracial work just fine.
@Ghostviperz
@Ghostviperz Жыл бұрын
@Onna Margret mula means mule even if it hurts your feelings I didn’t invent it. You can’t just will a new definition into existence. I can’t say turn around and say today gato means beautiful woman because I feel like it Gato= cat Mula= mule deal with it. You want to continue calling your family members Mulatto go ahead but now you know what your saying when you say that. We could call our people royals and queens and powerful we could call our people so many things No we need bitch slut Nig and mule this is the tragedy of internalized racism that that we hate ourselves and continue to abuse ourself long after the masters have died.
