An old trick is to get 2x5 gallon buckets with lids. When you’re underway, or motoring, you can put the soap and the clothes in one bucket with water and the vibration will agitation will wash them. You then can switch them to a freshwater bucket to rinse. It works when you’re anchored as well, but just takes a bit longer. 😅 it’s also free.

I can't wrangle that as an RVer, but I'm curious about the average water and power (solar? Whr?) consumption per load? ... I don't live the boat life... but I'm just adjacent! 😄

@@jimg5669 -- lots of variables with energy cost, part(s) cost, install cost and maintenance cost. Costs are coming down - yet a good watermaker on a 42' boat (say to cross an ocean or to stay "off grid" for an month++) could cost from $5K to $15K, though it can be less if you install yourself ... Your battery bank needs to handle it - or you have to run a generator or the engine to power the water maker (or keep the batteries topped off) ... in the tropics, solar can work wonders, though it is no _free_ or magical solution. Even the wiring - 12v, 24v or up to 240v can be pricey, though there can be cost savings with certain setups. A modern solar _power_ setup with charge controllers, breakers, etc... would run around 48v - yet step down to 12 or 24 or certain items and step up to 120 or 240 for other items, depending on where the boat was made and what - if any mods were made to it. Others may simply plug into short power ... and may pay the live-aboard rate and their home marina.

Girl get a boat with a washer dryer on it or put one on your current boat. Our houseboat has a 120 Volt stackable washer dryer. You can only wash or dry not both at the same time but it works perfectly. I wash 1 load, hang it to dry and start another load washing to save time. For a smaller sailboat or cruiser you could get a washer dryer combo unit that washes and dries! They even have portable washer dryers that are even smaller than the combo units. You can run it off solar panels especially if you hang them to dry. Then there is no need to load up in your dinghy and run to shore. Saves time as I wash ours as we are driving the boat down the lake or river.

I would think one of those foot pedal laundry spin washers would be easy and portable. wonderwash looks cool, it's improved handcrank design though, not foot pedal. there's also washing detergent sheets now that are even lower weight, look like paper, you can divide them up to be sealed off so in the event water gets on detergent you don't ruin all of it. divide up dry powder anyways though, can also use less... I find it easier to stay on top of laundry little by little rather than doing it all at once and leaving garments to be stinky and sweat stained for days on days or weeks.

I’ve been a livaboard for 25 years. Fortunately I do have a washer dryer on my boat but like living anywhere you do what needs to be done. I have zero desire to move back into a house. When I’m inside I don’t even think about being in a boat rather than on land. I have most all comforts and truthfully it’s much cheaper than living on land. We have quite a few people living on their boats. Many more only during the warm months. Absolutely some of the best people you could ever know. Unlike living on land where if you live in a high end neighborhood everyone work corporate level or highly skilled jobs and the lower income people live across town and you will probably never meet them and certainly not be in the same social group. On the water everyone had one thing in common. Boats and the love of being on the water so all those other things don’t separate you.

How you need to do it is get a onion bag large (google Australian onion bag orange) and fill it to 3/4 full and then you have to tie it off across open end making rope weave from one side to the other and tie it to the back of your sailboat. When you want to do some washing then you have to throw it in the ocean but you don’t put any detergent and you have to slow down so the bag doesn’t rip apart or off your boat. This will take anything that could be dirty or smelly. I did this with my pants that I would wear while baiting up 5000 hooks and then gut a dress the tuna swordfish that we were catching on the long line boat I was on. They would have 12-24 hours of all types of fish and blood and we would let the bags tow along for about 30 minutes and they wouldn’t have any on them and just a really faint smell so I would have a bucket with some clothes detergent and water in a bucket and I would dunk a piece of clothing in at a time and make sure it was wet pull it out and ring it in my hands. This would save me $200-$250 a month from taking my clothes to the laundry mat and using machines that people could have put anything in them. It’s like when you get in a shower when you get the soap you wash your face first then work your way down but the last area that soap touches is your bottom and then it goes back to the soap holder. So what if someone had been in and had a shower 2 minutes before you get in 🤢 Hopefully this makes sense and you have a thick plastic bag that has rectangle shaped cut all over it for water to flow through and this method works for you and saves you money
