My two top artists on spotify this year were against me and the mountain goats, so this is pretty much a dream come true

I know right! This is pretty amazing. Laura Jane Grace is the best and I'm going to see John Darnielle on his book tour next year.

This is one of the most underrated Goats songs covered by an amazing artist. Beautiful.

I wasn't aware of the changes in her life or the band, but listened to Against Me! a lot in college. I looooove this song by Mountain Goats and she absolutely killed it, a fantastic cover.

Since I was 19 against me singing acoustic songs has been what really touches me deep down. And to this day I can still be taken back by the beauty of the music. Love her so much!!!!! 14 years later. They have been my favorite since January 2004

This is even better than the Atom & His Package cover that inexplicably exists, but yeah John has denounced this song and won’t play it anymore

This pretty ironic. On one hand the original artist of this song denounces this song because it glorifies a violent, immature narrative of romance. Then you have laura, a progressive figure in the lgbt scene doing a cover of it. It's a powerful song, and a guilty pleasure of mine still, but it's just ironic to me.

Maybe she just interprets it differently. Personally, I always took the song as being an overt violent fantasy, and meant to be seen for the menacing and dangerous thing that it is, kind of like Nirvana's Polly. I respect Darnielle's stance on it but personally find it to be unfortunate, as the song is incredibly powerful and, at least in my opinion, obviously not meant to be taken as an actual love song. Death of the author, I guess.
@anarkidd0 then why still play all the songs about toxic destructive relationships that end in hate, alcoholism, and burning down your house? its his decision but its still one of his best songs and IMO one of the best songs ever written. it bums me out that he's an author and thinks so little of his fans that we would try to emulate the kind of people that populate some of his songs

@@armedjoy3045 Going by what he said, when he wrote this song he was himself incredibly edgy and identified himself with the protagonist. So while you or I can listen to Going to Georgia and hear a song about a fucked up dangerous character, for Darnielle it's a song about an ugly, toxic version of him. He's also said he doesn't mind when people cover it or like it, he just personally doesn't want to perform it again.
