Oh yeah Laura was totally in another dimension which had nothing whatsoever to do with any man made realities. In truth I believe she was more spirit than human. Anyone who's ever seen her in concert knows that to be in her presence was to be transported. In her company time stood still.

I would never say an artist from the 1960s is ahead of their time. Because that implies her music is like that of the 2020s which is a bad insult. She's great because she's OF her time.

Ken Nickels She played it pretty much as you hear it here. That's how she wrote it. If you mean did she break it down for me section by section, no is the answer. She always played her compositions all the way through and I can't recall her ever making a mistake. Amazing, when I think back on it. I got to hear her write all the first album songs after school and she always asked my opinion but never listened to me (thank god).

I wasn't familiar with Laura Nyro until the summer of 2020 one day over the summer i just wanted to here wedding bell blues by the fifth dimension and when I looked at writers, producers and composers the name laura Nyro was there I was like who is Laura Nyro? I guess after all these wonderful years I just assumed fifth Dimension was writing their own music and singing their own songs as my memory serves me correctly, I recall mom playing this album by the fifth Dimension when i was just a young girl on the stereo we were just dancing along and really having a jolly good time we never ,ever knew anything about Laura Nyro's music we were listening to soul music RB music. I was just a little girl back when or could of been a very young teen only God knows how old I was when wedding bells blues came out now that I am fully grown and of sound mind , I am literally blown away ABOUT what I discovered ABOUT pianist, lyricist singer/ songwriter , the incomparable beautiful and talented Miss Laura Nyro , I just recently found out she's the writer of dozens of hit songs other singers made famous including the fifth Dimension, Barbara Streisand, 3 dog night, and the list goes from there only God knows who else. they were the ones out there who were making millions of dollars and receiving all the trophies and awards basically from Laura Nyro's music catalog another thing I found out was that Laura received a lifetime achievement award she was inducted rock and roll Hall of fame but I read it wasn't until she was dead and literally gone before she received such and award and let alone recognition how come you have to be dead and gone gimme my flowers now while I am still breathing!!! 🌹🌷🌹🌷 couldn't believe I guess it was meant for me to find Miss Nyro and now that I have found her I am her biggest most loyal fan at 58years old! I love you Laura ❤️

To be able to write like this as a teenager (or a thirty year old for that matter) is rare. A prodigy. Carol King was writing far beyond her years too as a teenager, except unlike Laura, Carol rarely sang her own songs on records till many years later. But check out top 40 covers of King/Goffin songs from the 1960s. They are moving & amazing just as Laura Nyro songs are, imo!

I never knew not for even a moment about Miss Nyro and her existence here in planet earth until mid summer 2020 and when i die was the first song I had ever heard it broke me spiritually because at 59years old I lost my way through life I mean.. i found God at age 14... but in turn I lost God somewhere down the line "and when I die".

If you look in the comments Alan Merrill was talking about how he was in the room while Laura was composing it. And what he told her: you shouldn't write about that; it's too morbid. But he was glad she didn't listen to him. I mean everyone is free to interpret it how they want; to me it means reincarnation. I wonder if she listened to Alan Watts lectures or saw them on PBS TV. So I consider the song very positive.

I give credit to Blood, Sweat & Tears who did a fabulous job with this song. They changed the tempo at times well and the lead vocal was supreme. They did a lot for Laura, as did Streisand and the Fifth Dimension. That gets overlooked. Jimmy Webb thanks Glen Campbell for making his songs shine brightly at No. 1 in versions millions of people loved. I never heard Laura give credit to the fabulous artists who made her songs shine. Without them, many would not know of Laura's music. Me included.
@grandpavanderhof
@grandpavanderhof 3 жыл бұрын
I'm a fan of both of them, Jimmy Webb was a master songwriter, but he couldn't sing. So he really had no career outside of songwriting. Laura had a soulful voice. Those acts may have brought her attention, but their versions aren't as deep as Laura's originals. They all made money off of her talent, she owes them nothing.
@DexterHaven
@DexterHaven 3 жыл бұрын
@@grandpavanderhof You say "their versions were not as deep as Laura's" as if you don't even realize you are using a metaphor, not making a point of fact, and the metaphor is clumsy, vague, and ill-chosen. Hogwash! I say. Streisand sang "Stoney End" much better than Laura, gave it far more emotion and force as BS&T did a much better version of "And when I die." Millions of listeners voted with their wallet and agree with me, of course, because it is so apparent to the ear; you, on the other hand, sound like some pretentious, pompous artsy, out-of-touch effete snob.

Laura was arguably a better singer, and I either way it must be frustrating - they love your music, but not you. When this song hit #2, she had 2 other songs in the top 10! If she only wanted to be a songwriter I'm sure she would have been pleased, but she wanted to sing her own songs.

I asked if she remembered Laura, and she said yes! Their sons played together. She said one day she stopped by Laura's house and met Bob Dylan, who was sitting on her sofa. If you ever want to visit, it's at 9 Zinn Road. The neighbor said she owned the house next door too and lived there more and worked at #9.

Actually I don't agree that the cover versions were better than the originals. As for people voting with their wallet, had another cover artist or Laura herself put out the singles and promoted them heavily her versions could very well have been the million sellers. Regardless popularity isn't necessarily an indication of quality. She did have a top 40 album: NYT which is my fave.

Yes, Laura wrote many hits for others: Wedding Bell Blues, Eli's Coming, etc. As for her own music, my favorite album is NY Tendaberry.

Is there sheet music or a lead sheet for this rendition?

Yes, I believe Laura either wrote it down herself.

Alan was in the process of writing his autobiography (and I was researching, fact checking and editing it with him) when he died in March 2020 and unfortunately it may be that it never emerges now even in the incomplete form. A lot of what he had to say about Laura Nyro can be found online in blogs and interviews, by googling their names together.

My understanding is that she performed this song as a sort of an audition to join BS&T.

Actually she originally sold the song to Peter Paul and Mary for $5000, who recorded it first.

@@zenarcade64 Then it sounds to me like this was Laura's first, last, and only time she sold the rights to her music. Thanks for your comment. Listening to this song this evening, Laura's version becomes a Spiritual. I can imagine Southern enslaved singing this song, this way, to take them away from their heartbreaking existence.

I think Wedding Bell Blues was a hit before this was, but it was done by Peter Paul and Mary, but by '66 they were not a big player. 5th Dimension with Wedding Bell Blues and stone soul picnic, Three Dog Night with Eli's coming, and of course this song, Barbra Streisand Stoney End

Interesting comparison; Janis was envious of the attention David Geffen paid to Laura. She said, "so there's a new girl in town". But I don't really think they're alike, aside from the general genre.
