I miss Joe Allen, what an amazing place that was. An old school showbiz burger & fries joint, where the fans could rub shoulders with the stars. How sad it shut down and moved location from Exeter Street to nearby Burleigh Street a few years ago. The owners claimed it was a 'brick by brick' transfer that retained the soul of Joe Allen. But it will never be the same - how can it be, it's no longer a basement dive! Its heyday was the 'seventies and 'eighties, opened in 1977 as a sister restaurant to its 1965 launched, New York original, it was the must-visit London haunt for visiting US stars. How I would love to have been there when a middle aged Elizabeth Taylor entered with her entourage and crossed the floor to a secluded table. They say no one bothered her for autographs, that was the kind of place it was. And if a member of the public did have an encounter with a big star who'd dropped by for a midnight burger, they were respectful, as you were. I met and chatted with a few lovely British stars there over the years, but no American superstars like Miss Bacall, sadly! Thank you for sharing your story. In 1981 her movie 'The Fan' was released, a dark slasher film about an ageing star pursued by a psychotic stalker. She was 57 - maybe she was in London promoting it? I saw it on 'Talking Pictures TV' last week, it was cheesy and entertaining in equal measure! How lovely that the legendary Lauren Bacall gave you a memory of her to treasure forever. Joe Allen himself died in February of this year. His vision of a 'theatrical canteen' has endured in America and England for many decades. Alas the relocated London Joe Allen is closed due to Covid - let's hope the pandemic doesn't finish it off!

@@dboboc What a snide, silly comment! Lauren Bacall was 19 when she met and fell in love with 44 year old Bogart. He was in his third unhappy marriage, to a fellow actor and alcoholic. Their fights were so legendary, they were known as 'The battling Bogarts'. Lauren was the young model in her first acting role in 'To Have and Have Not'. Bacall and Bogart fell in love - what can I tell you, it happens! Do you think people should stay in unhappy marriages forever? Bogart fought the attraction to Bacall, and repeatedly left and returned to his wife through loyalty. But the love was gone. He finally divorced her and married Lauren - or Betty, her real name and the one he used for her - when she was 20 and he 45. Bogart was childless before he met Bacall, so no family was broken up. He went on to have his only children with her, a son and a daughter, and 11 happy years of marriage before he tragically died of cancer. He was without doubt the love of Lauren's life, she had put her acting career on hold to be his wife and mother to his children. She came on set with him and endured the heat and mosquitoes when he made 'The African Queen'. "He kidded that a woman's place was in the home, but he was only half kidding. He had divorced three actresses, and was convinced that a career and marriage don't mix". She nursed him through his horrible, final decline from esophagus cancer, which took his weight down to 80lbs. Lauren was a widow at 32, she paid a high price for her short marriage to a legend. And she knew her name would forever be overshadowed by Bogart's. But she had no regrets. "Bogie's death was devastating, but I had my two young children to focus on, So I had something constructive to think of". In 2011 she told Vanity Fair: "My obit is going to be full of Bogart, I'm sure". Yet she appreciated her good fortune in meeting him, saying: "I was so lucky when I was young. What happened to me then, sometimes happens to people when they're older. And sometimes never happens. So I feel lucky that I had it at all". She has always maintained her affair with Frank began after Bogie died, but what they did was no particular secret in Hollywood at the time. I believe she could have waited.

@@basilbcf I think that, more than anything, says it best. I grew up in the era of the original SNL and others and when they did political jokes, they made fun of pretty much everyone. If you did or said something they thought was stupid or funny, they made fun of it. Now it's just another mouthpiece for only one side of the political arena, is boring and predictable. No one has the brass to actually be funny because they're all to scared to be and too competitive to see who can be the most "woke." Can't hold a candle to people like this.
