In a series of interviews and appearances spanning nearly three decades, Lauren Bacall shares thoughts and memories of her friend Katharine Hepburn. The actresses met during the making of the 1951 film 'The African Queen', and Bacall later adapted Hepburn's Oscar-nominated 1942 role in 'Woman of the Year' for the Tony-winning 1981 Broadway musical of the same name.

I met Miss Bacall in 1994 at the premier after party of "READY TO WEAR" /"PretaPorter" a Robert Altman film she starred in, our tables were next to eachother at the famous ROSELAND BALLROOM in NewYork City -a friend dared me to ask her for a dance , i did , she said, ( why yes of course) Miss Bacall, was ever so lovely and appreciative, after i escorted her back to her table ... she said very kindly, ( thank you for making an old broad feel young again) I was in pure heaven, she was wearing a scent that was truly divine, a true lady, grace ,class & beauty all the way.. the epitome' of Hollywood Royalty ! I will never forget it !!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I don't know why but I never liked Katharine Hepburn as an actress or a person. Then, I realized how stupid I was for judging the personality and morality of a person without finding out all I could about them. So I decided to do that. I am ashamed, but also proud, to say, the more I learned about her, the more I liked about her. Since then I have learned to keep my mind's mouth shut until I have thoroughly heard and seen all there is. Judge not has a familiar ring to it.

Her father was a very liberal doctor and her mother a leader in the women's voting rights movement. She lost her older brother in her teens (I think), most thought he killed himself. Her acting was a way for her to deal with things. She was ambitious as hell, and very smart. Not intelligent in the books but smart. She managed to mask her personal love life by mounting relations with famous men who were not exactly straight, like Spencer Tracy and even Howard Hughes. (Her first husband was totally gay and was her first attempt to use a man as a beard. They never lived together, and even have sex. She kept him around until going after larger prey). They were her beards, but she was also theirs. I think her major love was Laura Harding (name?) who was the heir to the American Express money tree. Harding said once that she believed Hepburn wasn't capable of loving anyone, that she was just too narcistic. And career driven. I guess she loved being famous. I would think she would be a cautious role model, depending on how open minded you are.

@@errolpletcher9186 Despite the extensive puffing of facts on the internet and Wikipedia, no, Mrs. Hepburn (as she was known) wasn't a co-founder of Planned Parenthood, although she was part of a trio that met with Margaret Sanger a number of times (Sanger mentions her just once in passing in a sentence in her autobiography, published in 1938.) Mrs. Hepburn *was* part of a group that was inspired by Sanger, and she helped form the Connecticut Branch of the American Birth Control League in 1923 (in 1921 Sanger founded the American Birth Control League [precursor to PPFA] before Mrs. Hepburn ever met her.) Katharine Hepburn the actress did not become associated with PP until 1981, and that was merely to lend her name and did not include any actual involvement.

I love her based purely on her own efforts. You hear and read about how nervous she was making To Have and To Have Not. Then you watch this 19 year old kid just blow everybody off-screen, including her legendary hubby to be. But the real beauty of Bacall? Her willingness to spend decades singing the praises of and keeping the memories of her friends and loved ones from the era they all shared so alive and current just proves she was a singularly unpretentious icon. I can just imagine the Great Kate watching this from the clouds and smiling profusely. I feel like Lauren was the only woman or peer whose opinion of her she valued and cared about (excelt maybe Laura Harding, but alas that’s, well, “different”).

Spencer Tracy’s wife’s family is from my city. Her family home is still occupied. She brought their kids back to grow up after they had a deaf child. Kathryn was with Spencer after.

Judy Crown (the famous hairstylist who worked with her for many years) said she was mean. I'm not sure if I believe it--but she's a pretty reliable person. Some people don;t like directness--it can be tough sometimes but doesn't mean a person isn't cool or nice.

Tough has the connotation of being difficult. Resilient is a good word and its better than tough at saying what you're saying.

God I loved Katherine H. Bizarrely I met Ms Bacall, here in London, at my Periodontist. I was very good though-I didn't let on-and just shot the breeze. I was only vaguely annoying
