The problem out west is the environmental groups. I'm all for preserving and expanding our forests but sensible management has to be a part of that. I live in Indiana (I'm 53 ) and although we don't have vast forests we do have some decent sized areas and I can never remember of fire of anything substantial in my lifetime. What forest we do have is routinely cleared of dead underbrush and trees.

That's really big for European nations such as Germany as well, and it's a damn shame we don't do more about it here. Seems like we can't avoid them any given calendar year in just California, when realistically we could cut way way back on them, and have them be far more manageable when they did occur if we just took better care of the environment in practical ways.
