Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on KZfaq went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Every time she brings tears in my eyes cause her singing is so beautiful. Her voice touches my heart and cleanses my soul.

I’m so happy for you! Even though you’re about 20 years behind on Angelina’s journey, you can catch up. I enjoy many singers and most styles of music (except jansta rap). Angelina can do it all. Thank you for discovering Angelina Jordan. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZfaq, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I just love reading all the comments when someone new discovers Angelina, always so warming. All I can add is that in 50 years of loving music daily and working in the music industry, I have never heard anything as deep and soul-touching as this incredible young lady. She kept from injuring her voice by never singing this song in the same way ever again. Every time she sang it live later on (for a few years afterwards), she pulled _way_ back on all the yelling and growling, but tried to keep the same basic vocal arrangement - which, if you ask me, didn't work *at all* , and made all her subsequent versions seem little better than any other covers of this song sung in anywhere near the same style. (This is a rare case where her original studio version was better than her subsequent live versions - usually it's the other way 'round.) But we can all be thankful that she "went this hard" at least until this recording was in the can, because I can honestly say, this is the best, "most convincing" cover of this song I've ever heard. And it's from a 9-year-old Norwegian girl. I _never_ would have thought that was possible before I discovered Angelina Jordan.

Dear Lauren, Angelina is practicing every (almost) day for hours since age 3,5. She listened to the original of composer Mr. Hawkins (candle light) and modernised it. She arranges her songs since the age of 7. My friends and co-commenters will tell you a lot about her. You might find her to be VERY interesting. Her mind is at least 20 years older than her body. Just FYI, the date of the video (Sept 2016) is the KZfaq posting date however the performance was actually recorded about a year and a half earlier when Angelina was 9. A couple of notes if you decide to check out Back To Black. Angelina was 10 at the time of the recording. She also wrote new lyrics for the song in one day as the original lyrics were not appropriate for a 10 year old. She mentions this in the description of the video. She also revised the lyrics to Rehab which she performed in concert.

She treats every note, of every song, as the most important and it is because every note is part of the story. "Back to Black" is a good choice for your next reaction, as Angelina is a year older at age 10. The day before her recording session, for Back to Black, her mom read the Amy Winehouse lyrics and told her daughter she couldn't sing them. When she was younger she had lots of voices, as she was trying out lots of different ways to sing, but jazz was her first love,, like Louie Armstrong, Billy holiday, Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Adele, Too many to say enjoy watching her younger videos as she's trying out all these different people's songs,, now that she's older , she's more into her own songs that she writes and her more mature voice,, that why seeing her sing when she started to sing you can see all the ways that she can sing,, which she sings some of the songs again when she was older, and they are different from her first time,, which I personally like better than her new way of singing them,, BUT,, All are beautiful !!! And her new album of her own songs is Great !!
