I agree. As a seamstress if she were to do it full time as a job it would not be as fulfilling as it is now. When you have to do something it sometimes takes some of the joy out of it. When you sew for others there is another level of stress and conflict. I have my own shop but I do not sew clothing for others (I have made dresses but they are ready to wear and not commissioned).

Luvelehh there are lots of different ways to get into historical fashion, there are Facebook groups/ youtubers and events such as reenactments and history lecture as well as classes for sewing/ costume design that can help you make friends with the same interest or time period :) you can also research in different ways focusing on type of time period/culture or use books such as Janet Arnold’s that has historical patterns you could have a go makeing yourself ^_^ I to find the makeing part is a lot more fun less stressful when it’s not for a commission x

Given what this woman has graciously explained about not wanting to recreate 18th century life and being aware of how hard it was back then, I feel like it's kind of unfair to refer to her as a "modern day Marie Antoinette". Clearly this lady has a lot more going on.

I so appreciate how she mentions the economic strife and depression in that era and isn't trying to glorify the aristocracy. I think that's bomb. If I was Given the chance I'd love to dress up go to 16th-19th century balls. even just a masquerade ball. Recreate the fashion, foxtrot, but to music of 2013-2018 in an orchestrated piece. I was looking at fashion over the centuries, and it's crazy to see how we went from these huge petticoats and robes to jeans t-shirts and short dresses. I’d say bring corsets and petticoats and tunics leather, fur back but modernize them, not so much corsets for a smaller waist, but I think they look sexy if they are form fitting
@tacosmexicanstyle7846
@tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 жыл бұрын
Mason Perry Focus shifted away from following the fashion trends of the upper classes after both world wars and working class people realised they were allowed to simplify their clothing. The old styles are very well and good if you want to spend all day sitting in a library with a book but not very effective if you're planning on doing anything else... the upper classes finally folded in the 50s and 60s when it became ordinary for them to have day jobs, thus making the big skirts of the past unsuitable. These outfits would be assembled in 10 or more pieces also cost a fortune to make, you can't really mass produce them with good results unfortunately. Maybe if we reverted to 20s styles, they give freedom of movement and drop the heavy corsetry without losing the elegance
@justanotherhappyhumanist8832
@justanotherhappyhumanist8832 6 жыл бұрын
Mason Perry They didn’t wear corsets during this time period (18th century), they wore stays. Stays were a precursor to the corsets of the 19th century. They weren’t as restrictive.

Christina Whale You guys are so lucky. I have to buy mine. I was always in the orchestra which kept me from taking sewing classes in school. But I've made a Vogue swing dress all by hand. My stays are 100% sewn by hand. Much of my work is done by hand- when possible i prefer to hand sew as I find it meditative. I do use a machine for the long inside seams but if time permitted I would not. Anything you see on the outside is done by hand. Its a fallacy that hand sewing is arduous or weaker than its machine counterpart. Both can serve a purpose. My makeup is modern...although I suspect in the future they will find out our make up is toxic too. ;)

Woow that is taking dedication! :D when i think in modern fashion is less is more, minimalistic, let you move and i've seen modern design inspired in baroque and rococo, but what do you mean is baroque and rococo style with moderns things right? and maybe in the future make up will be good to take care of the skin :D

I use to live in Astoria Queens and I took that subway a billion times when I worked in NYC. I would have loved to have seen you taking the subway and sitting beside me with those gowns....I also trained and worked as a costume designer in my undergraduate studies...that was ages ago...now I spend my time collecting and making videos on Vintage Costume Jewelry. Keep it up, you look amazing and I love that you pursue your passion. I love it!!!!
