In celebration of Arbor Day, I'm thrilled to release the title track, “Trees,” an imagined message from our fellow inhabitants of this planet, whose sense of time is measured in decades rather than seconds. The stubbornness and indomitable striving of these providers of the oxygen we breathe give me hope for the future of life on Earth.
Built off of bluegrass and old-time’s gospel traditions, “Trees” finds ample hope in its message of ebb and flow, growth and harvest, life and death. Joining me in this a capella quartet, Hasee Ciaccio, George Guthrie, and Tom Rozum's harmony vocals throughout the track unites everyone together as one:
Would you try to turn this whole world into dust?
Don’t you know you cannot wrest the land from us?
For we are patient, we are old
And though we fall, our roots will grow
I think there's one very strong thread in this album, a thread of loss. I'm not a "Pollyanna," I just feel like I can't be. But even in loss, there's so much joy, too. And there's so much beauty and I want to have room for all of that.
