Lauterbrunnen is a village and municipality in the administrative district of Interlaken-Oberhasli, in the Swiss canton of Bern. It is situated between gigantic rock faces and mountain tops, in one of the most spectacular trough valleys in the Alps. With its 72 thundering waterfalls, secluded valleys, colorful alpine meadows, and lonely mountain inns, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one amongst the largest nature conservation areas in Switzerland.
The Lauterbrunnen Valley includes 72 waterfalls, the most prominent of which is the Staubbach Falls. They are one of the largest free-falling waterfalls in Europe and plunge nearly 300 meters from an overhanging rock face. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the valley in 1779 and was inspired to compose his well-known poem ‘Spirit song over the waters’ by the roaring waters. In any case, as Lauterbrunnen’s notoriety developed and with the culmination of a street from Interlaken in 1834 and the 1890 Bernese Oberland Railway, more inns were required for vacationers. As new lodgings were fabricated, another traveler foundation was additionally underlying the town. They constructed streetcars to Mürren in 1891 and to Wengen in 1893.
Grindelwald, the village on the Eiger in the Bernese Oberland, is nestled in a lovely green valley surrounded by towering peaks, such as the Eiger North Face and the Wetterhorn. This grandiose panorama as well as the countless viewpoints and activities on offer make Grindelwald one of the most popular and cosmopolitan tourist destinations in Switzerland and the largest ski area in the Jungfrau region.
Thanks to the majestic panorama and the glacier which once descended into the valley, Grindelwald attracted its first visitors, mainly English, from the end of the 18th century. In the middle of the 19th century mountaineering began to become popular and local mountain guides climbed the peaks of the region with English tourists. The first ascent of the Eiger, reputed to be very difficult, took place in 1858 (the north wall only in 1938).
With the construction of roads and railway lines at the end of the 19th century, access to Grindelwald became easier and saw the expansion of winter tourism. The first cable car in the Alps was born here in 1908 at the Wetterhorn. And in 1912, the railway arrived at the Jungfraujoch via the Little Scheidegg; Even today, the “Top of Europe” is Europe’s highest railway station and a world-famous eternal snow and ice excursion destination.
