Hello there, TerryLHassse When people talk about Frankfurt Hahn, they immediately think of Frankfurt Main airport, but as you know, this airport is over two hours ride by bus. Very little is left of the old US Air Force Base (Hahn AB) from the 80s. Last year, the NCO Club was demolished by workers, and now the area where the buildings once so proudly stood is an empty lot with stone weeds starting to grow. The aircraft hangers are still there, and the locals use them from storage of equipment and construction materials. Some of these structures are in good shape while others are starting to look too rusty, and if nothing is done as preventive maintaintenance, the metal is going to be beyond any help, and probably they will have to demolished as well. The old PX is still there, but it sits empty as there are no companies interested in opening an old supermarket building. It probably will be demolished as well. I was told by the workers at the airport that lots of the buildings that were demolished had asbestos, so they couldn't be utilized by the locals. The officers and enlisted housing buildings and single family homes are still there and are now housing civilians who probably have purchased the dwellings and now live in them, and businesses occupy some of the structures. The water treatment plant is still there as it is part of the city of Hahn. I was never in Hahn during the 80s, as I served in the US Army in Korea during those years. I am glad that you stopped by my humble channel and enjoyed the video. I hope that my explanation of what's left of the old Hahn AB has brought you some good memories back.

Same here. I was there 89-91. The last place he was talking about being a Polish place was a Chinese Restaurant when I was there. A buddy and I had a 7 course meal on Thanksgiving day.

After 9 months in the desert with no trees, grass, or even clean air to breathe. We had a 3 hour layover in the evening at Frankfurt Hahn. Seeing the grass, trees, old buildings, and the rain.....the rain in the evening. It made me cry. Germany is one of the prettiest countries I've ever been to. Thanks for the upload!

I assume that you were a US Air Force member stationed there at that time. As far as I could tell, there is not much left from those days when you were there. The water treatment plant it is still there, as well as some of the combat hangars used by the fighters of the era. These hangars are now private storage buildings, full of construction materials, fertilizers, and other stuff as they now lie outside the perimeter fence of the Frankfurt Hahn Airport. One day, I watched with sadness as an excavator and a backhoe demolished the NCO club located across from the main entrance to the FBO building. The town does still look good. The same is true for the officers and NCO housing buildings near the airport, as they are now private offices or apartments. Btw, I was serving in the US Army 2nd ID in Korea, as I served two years with the infantry over there. Thank you for watching my videos. It is much appreciated.

@@afreightdogslife Yes I was stationed there. I enjoyed my time there, and always wanted to go back. Unfortunately after seeing videos of the base area I think it would be depressing to go back. During my time in the Air Force and Reserves I was at 6 different bases, 3 of them no longer exist.

@@marktc01You are right about that, it is sad to see all of these once formidable military bases disappearing worldwide. I was stationed in Ft. Ord California for one year and now that base doesn't exist, it has been developed into a few neighborhoods and shopping centers. Obviously, I was never in Hann during those years, so I never got to see the actual AF base. I could only imagine the area as it once looked and now only a few buildings and structures remain.

Hello there, Justmedabbie This little town is very quiet and peaceful. As you can see, the place is very clean, as no one throws any trash on the street. The whole town is the way any town should be, clean, quiet, and full of educated people. Most small towns in Germany are very similar to this town. I am glad that you enjoyed the video. Justmedabbie, thank you for watching my videos. It is much appreciated.

Back to fly freight-liner again? Thought you were teaching flight lessons in Florida. Anyway great to see your new video again. Looking forwarding to seeing your new cockpit clips again. Btw, are you sure the German guy who told you not to film is not drunk? What's the problem to film a small German town street?!

😆😆😆 actually, the guy was a worker for the hotel My Place, and he truly was concerned about someone calling the police to turn me in for recording the small country town. I am still working for FlightSafety International in Orlando, Florida. This video was one of the few videos that were recorded by me over a year ago, and I never got to upload it because I had misplaced the memory card. What's messed up is that I had placed the memory card in a box, so it would be easy to find it, but as you know, it took me over a year to actually find the memory card, lol. Hopefully, around June 2024, I could go back to flying the line once again. My wife is doing slightly better than expected, I am hoping that she will continue to get better and that in a few months, she will continue to get better towards her full recovery. Cancer is definitively tough, no doubt about it.

@@afreightdogslife Thank you for responding and clarification on the time when the video was taken. You are such a wonderful husband. I am sure your wife appreciates it a lot. I wish her speedy recovery. Btw, I have a question about getting a PPL. Can I self study the written test materials such as by purchasing an online course and take the test before enrolling into a flight school to learn flying?

@@mikef6399 You can buy an online course but when you go to the testing center they will ask for an instructor endorsement. Not sure if those courses can give you one or have to get one the traditional way through a cfi

@mikef6399 Hello Mike. I am so sorry I completely missed your message until right now. YT is not that friendly towards me, as you can tell. Now that I have found your message, I have a couple of questions for you and a a couple of suggestions. The short answer is yes. Yes you can do all of your ground school studies with books or with videos. These are readily available online or at your local flight school. The questions that I have for you are the following: Are you in the USA? Are you planning to get a PPL to start on a pilot's career, or is it just for weekend fun flying? Let me know. Thank you, and sorry once again about the delay.

Nice to see my own country through different eyes. B.t.w., it is not forbidden to film in general. It is definitely not allowed to film people without consent or any person-oriented stuff (e.g. car plates). Exceptions are people in the background of some point of interest or if they are not recognizable. (This is an extremely short version of a very elaborate set of laws).

Yes, I had imagined that was the case here. As you can see, I was not trying to record anyone in particular or anyone's property for that matter. All I was doing was to showcase the beauty in this sleepy, old, and charming little German town where we used to stay quite often. Thank you for watching my videos. It is much appreciated.

Hello there, MrPlattsmouth That's an interesting observation. In fact, I have never met anyone who was there during those years. There used to be one airport ramp employee who retired during the winter of 2018, but we didn't really talk to him as he was not part of the group of people that we normally dealt with every time we were there at the airport. Were you with the US Air Force or the US Army at the time, and if so, were you stationed in Hahn? Btw, there is one more hotel that we use in the area. It is called St. Michael Hotel, and it is located in Morbach, only a few miles up the road from Lautzenhausen, Germany.
