Bodycam footage shows key moments surrounding a 30-hour standoff between a North Carolina man and a SWAT team in March 2023. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said 32-year-old Anh Thai was standing outside his home while threatening to kill his neighbors and responding officers over a megaphone. Law&Crime’s Sierra Gillespie breaks down what happened next.

You need to have a chat with your editors. First we saw the end of the standoff played early, out of order, then when we actually got to the takedown the exact same footage from before was played again, twice in a row.

I had a friend whose adult son was schizophrenic. She called all the authorities available to try to get help. Then when he ended up killing an innocent man walking his dog, the public blamed her for not helping her son. We really need a system to help these families.

i totally agree, it's always blame the mom first it seems before ever even finding out what the suspects issues really are first. As a mom its offensive. As a rational person i do see where people and so many examples of bad parenting gives this impression to most persons. It's a difficult issue and will always be blended with harsh realities that there are the good and bad in all situations and there are rational and irrational persons who launch opinions on the matter.

I'm so sorry! I lost a friend do to schizophrenia I noticed the switch in 8th grade we were on the bus and she said, "I wonder what it would be like to jump off a tall building." We stopped being friends and she turned to alcohol in 8th grade. We ended up losing touch but found each other again and she told me she has schizophrenia. I knew when she was herself vs the schizophrenia talking and it made me sad. I had to cut things off with her though after she thought I did something to her when I didn't we were barely talking then. She was doing harder drugs to after I lost touch with her. I hope she is okay cause she has a daughter. Just makes me sad. I feel bad for that mother. Yeah their needs to be a system to help these families cause it would be cool to get these people back I didn't get my best friend from 7th grade back and it really makes me sad cause after watching this I really miss her a lot but I don't know if I will ever get her back.

In what way? Where I live if you say something even KIND OF threatening to someone else or about yourself the cops come and take you against your will to the mental ward of the hospital where they then COMMIT you to a mental mental hospital until they feel you’re safe enough to leave. I got taken for simply saying “I CANT DO THIS ANYMORE” when I was sick.. and I was there with people with schizophrenia etc who’d been there for MONTHS

@@Wildcat221 I don't know how it is at hospitals but working at a nursing home in a very rural community of only 800 people. We turn away some people that have huge mental conditions like this because we don't have the capabilities to handle it. We are 40 minutes away from a hopsital if there is an emergency. There are machines and procedures that need to be used for some conditions and we don't have access or the funding to afford equipment like that. There are just so many factors. My dad had a really huge mental health crises in his last few years to the point where he thought he was elvis, then jesus, then god. We got really fortunate that he wasn't violent or agressive just really... confused... For lack of better words. Had to go to a special place that wasn't a normal hospital like 2 hours away from home. Nobody in any town in almost a 70 mile radius would accept him. I don't know where this was at but i'd chalk it up to hospital in the area wasn't qualified, or equipped, or staffed for it.

Thanks~ you explained that really well & it offers some insight as to what may have occurred with this man. I’m so sorry about your dad. 😔 I hope your final years with him held some good memories & times. It sounds as though he had a very supportive family. And how long before they let him out again to the care of his mother and let him decide when and if he wants to take his medication? A week? Two weeks?? This is the problem. While individual rights are no doubt important. You cant let someones individual rights trump the life, liberty and persuit of happiness of an entire neighborhood, town, State or country go by the wayside! Over 40 encounters with the police is beyond ridiculous. How long must normal, decent society suffer until mandatory commitment to a mental institution takes place? And im talking years of commitment not weeks or months! If someone refuses to take medications which allow them to function in civilized society then the only option is commitment and forced medication. Period.

@@ct5625but the commenter wasn’t talking about a sudden mental breakdown. Please read the post carefully. The poster is referring to the fact that this has been going on for a prolonged time. The police had been called out 40+ times to his house because of him. This has nothing to do with empathy at this point; this is about protecting people who must come in contact with him. This is about him not staying on his meds. This is about the safety of his neighbors from getting shot by him, and how much longer they are expected to live in fear of going outside in their own yards. I’d like to see how far your empathy stretches after living for months with an unstable, non compliant mental case. My empathy ends where my life becomes endangered.

Nope unfortunately it's going to fall on the homeowners insurance and who knows if she's been paying the premiums since her husband died she's going to wind up 50 to 75 k and even with insurance her deductibles are probably going to be 5 to 10 grand and probably cap @ 20 to 30,000 of damage so she screwed!

Cause we have a huge section of the country that wants to defund anything to do with police. They cannot afford to train every officer to the level required to deal with a barricaded armed suspect, either violently or nonviolently. Ideally police should undergo several years of training along with continued and repeated training before even starting the job, in some places it takes less than half a year for police to be trained. Instead they have to focus on overwhelming force to handle things. Equipment doesn’t age out or quit or get fired, so state govts figure it’s easier to just buy fancy equipment and train only the best officers to the level of swat operators. Realistically the avg police officer only trains to he minimum level required and are let loose. Not much changes except learning from experience on the job. Not much extra training is given beyond min. requirements

Pretty sure insurance will sort it out for her (either hers or the police’s). If the house is legally in her name, and she let them destroy it in pursuit of an investigation/public safety issue, then she’ll be getting a shiny new garage door. So hopefully it’s not in his name…. But yeah, I’m fairly certain things like that get covered. There would be a lot of holes everywhere if it weren’t the case. lol

I have neighbors down the street who have a schizophrenic adult son, Mark. A couple years ago he was in a bad place and set another neighbors home/porch on fire at 3am. Thankfully the fire hall is literally just down the road and the firefighters were able to put it out before there was too much damage, and the elderly woman and her daughter who live there were okay. Mark was charged but released, though his parents would not let him come home until he got his mental health situation under control. Today, he is doing well and lives back in our community. The folks who's house was arsoned forgave him. I'm still wary of him, but my few interactions with him have been pleasant. Very thankful he didn't turn out like Ahn Thai.

In Maryland, there is a law that once a person stay in your house for at least 90 days, you cannot evict that person. I know a mother with a adult daughter with mental problem. The mother refused to let her daughter in the house because she does not take her medication, but the police force her to take her because she was living with her before. The mother would have to move to the different state.
