A California jury convicted Aaron Romo, 36, of killing his ex-girlfriend Mirelle Mateus, 24, after prosecutors say he lured her to his apartment despite a restraining order. Mateus’s mother found her daughter’s body in the bathtub. She had been badly beaten and strangled. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber spoke with the victim’s sister, Sandy Caceros, who says local law enforcement failed Mirelle and her family.

Criminal convictions are already public information, genius. Read her petition, unlike what she said to Jesse about arrests the petition says CONVICTIONS, so it already IS a law under basic existing public information statutes. What's more, the victim KNEW this guy was violent because he had already previously assaulted her, but she CHOSE to go over to his house again. This wonderful proposed new law you foolishly laud would have made ZERO difference.

Of course, Canada is an authoritarian Socialist country in which citizens lack any meaningful rights--no freedom of speech or religion, no right to self-defense, to assemble--you are as bad as the Eastern Block back in the USSR days. Criminal convictions are already public information in all US states, in virtually all US states arrest records are as well, though some purge them after certain numbers of years, similar to how old i formation drops off credit reports. This girl KNEW he was an abuser because he had seriously assaulted her previously and was subject to a restraining order for it. SHE CHOSE to violate her own order and go to him. This proposed new law would have in no way prevented this murder, it is just silly to pretend one has anything to do with the other.

Because people like you can't differentiate between that being a fact of the case versus that being used as a defense to the crime, or being used to fault the victim? What was it you think the cops should have done in that situation? They were told that she was saying something to the effect of "I'm too smart to go in there" and resisting him but went inside anyway. Neighbor reporting to 911? Cops arrive, knock repeatedly on the door and no answer. What next? What were they supposed to do? They can't just kick the door in without probable cause. @@Perdu... You can't kick open someone's door during a wellness check. You have to have permission to go inside, or someone who has authority of the home or apartment. You have to hear someone screaming inside or calling for help, or be able to look through a window and see something that gives probable cause. Without that, the cops have no legal right to enter. Worse yet, it wasn't her apartment. It was his. You cannot do a wellness check on someone when they are supposedly inside someone else's home.
