Jonathan, how do you pay your employees? Are they paid an annual salary or hourly. If hourly do they get paid at least 40 hours a week for the entire 52 week year? Do you pay them time in a half for any (overtime) hours over a 8 hour day or anything over 40 hours per week? Of course you can tell with my question, I use to corporate America. I looking to start this year with my own lawn care, but as a solo operator. My question is really for the future. Thanks, Jason Cavenee~ Norman, OK.

Part 2: Zillow. You can plug in any type of home, the price, zip code, location near you. You can click on homes sold and the newest homes sold/closed with the date. I get 30 closings a week here in Phoenix, Arizona. 85296 zip code. Once i see a closing. Next drive to the house and drop off that flyer. I've done this many times on a Saturday and Sunday only to see a moving truck in driveway. New home owner and your the new landscaper they need. Perfect timing. I also see existing homes for sale near me. I drop off my flyer and a note attached saying; Sell your house faster by making it sparkle with attention. Have your lawn look immaculate for selling. Business flyer attached.

Jonathan, I modeled my set up after this video. It’s my second year but my first with the set up. Last year was just getting my feet wet with a riding lawn mower and a push mower. This year has been a game changer with a 42 inch brand new zero turn paid with cash. A really good size for the properties that I mow.2 backpack blowers a lightweight and A heavy duty. An edger and two trimmers. A Honda commercial mower for the ditches and such when I encounter them. I must say I am very happy with the results. I’m only doing it 2 days a week so it doesn’t work for me to have a website now. I have more than enough work to keep me busy but when I do I will definitely follow your advice in regards to developing a good website. Your postcard and door hanger marketing advice was very helpful 3/4 of my business came from that. The rest came from walk ups and referrals. Which essentially came from the door hangers and postcards. Very solid advice.

This video was awesome. I have a 50 inch Cub zero turn that I bought for my yard and I have now decided to get into the lawn maintenance game next spring. I am putting some things together and I kept believing I needed a commercial mower. Now I feel like I can get started with my Cub and my Stihl weed whacker. I still need to get a good trailer and a good blower and stick edger. Thanks man. This vid really helped.

Hey Jonathan, if you've never tried Tanaka handheld (not stick) hedge trimmers I recommend trying them out. Out of all the ones I've ever used Tanaka was the lightest (less fatigue = better looking shrubs) and started up easy every time. Just saying, that's been my experience with them.

All experience shared is good. Startup advise is the most needed. I got going with a Murray push mower, first rider was something like a Murray with a stamped 30" deck & 11HP. Next upgrade was another Murray with a 42" stamped deck and hydrostatic drive. I was styling then! Ended up doing landscape maintenance as a side job throughout the 90's. Starting out is the most clueless time for most - after you've been in it a couple of years one learns - hopefully. I started out with a bunch of Home Depot grade junk. Oh yeah, almost forgot the Weed Eater brand weed eaters and $159 Homelite back pack blowers - went through two of those before buying the first Echo blower - a PB-5800 which was a great machine. Today at home I use an Echo 8210 blower, Echo SRM-2320T trimmer, Echo edger, Echo hedge trimmer. I just upgraded the blower from an Echo PB-751T, passed that 10 year old still in great shape machine to a buddy. Also gave him the Echo SRM-280T as it was way over the top for my yard and I wanted something lighter, so I picked up the SRM-2320T which is nice and light and plenty of get up and go for my yard. Had a Husqvarna 24V48 lawn tractor that also went out the door, buddy also got that and I now mow with a Gravely ZTX 42. Good advice on the blower - get a monster, don't need rakes anymore and they save tons of time - at the end of the job, it's down to blow and go. I had the same 7x12 trailer with ramp gate and 2' sides - that's the one to go with.

Your starting out on the right track, must have a stick edger and must remove guard from weedeater. I have just switched blowers back to echo, the lifespan of a stihl blower is less than 3 years. I would rather tote that extra few pounds and have a blower that will run for 5 years. Keep in mind it gets worse..new equipment new payments, older equipment more repairs. More lawns,more gass more miles. I made $156,000 last year,$10,000 went to upkeep and repairs and maintenance. Fuel cost me $ 17,000. That's not including replacing small equipment, blades,tires,truck maintenance insurance, my last truck was 9 years old and had 246,000 miles. It goes on and on. And then tax time comes. Be sure you get top dollar,do quality work and keep travel time to a minimum. I do 25-30 lawns a day and some days only move my truck 7 or 8 times. Sounds like your off to good start. Just remember that if you can't keep your lawn looking better than the one next door...you'll never get the one across the street. I have yards in side by side clumps and 1 stop will make $800 a month and take less than an hour to do.

I have a Echo 266 PAS and a 94R Stihl. It’s probably a 90R but I think it’s the 94R. I could buy a stick edger but I bought the edge attachment for my Echo. I have a Stihl backpack blower but it’s not the high end. I have all the attachments I need for my Echo. I think the Echo unit that i have is better than the Stihl unit. They’re both evenly good for weed eating

Cant agree more re Stihl worked next to a lawn mower repair man for over 10 years hardly ever saw Echo equipment come in for repair but loads and loads of Stilh and even he did not like them although they kept him in work.. Again i have a Kawasaki strimmer/weed eater bought second hand from a commercial company so used hard for a few years by them I have owned it for a further 15 years not a single problem NOTHING. I also like huskvana when it comes to chain saws. Thanks for the up load my friend really good although here in the U.K. I dont think we can earn quite the same amount Well i find it hard ..Cheers good luck with the growth ..

I've got the same mower. My question is this, do you have the mulch kit or no? If so, how do you handle biweekly yards when they want it cut short. If you dont mulch, same question...without bagging the clippings. I'd rather lose a yard than spend an hour raking and bagging.

Cus I can hand u multiple stihl gear that top quality, reliable, easy starting, etc. almost all there chainsaws. hand held hedge trimmers , an long shaft trimmer, blowers, an more. all the stihl I've ever had or gone through been super quality. other then 2,3 minor repairs. over the years. but I do have echo weed whacker. srm.210 I believe it is. its been a beast. every brand has there few lemon models. etc. I'm fan of both stihl and echo.

Disagree about the edger. Weed whacking the edges look better and your only going back to the trailer for one piece of equipment. If you get good with a weed eater it’s much much faster and looks better. Only use a stick edger on beds that have fresh mulch for obvious reasons.

Would you still recommend this mower? The payment has not gone up much. If I were a solo operator, would you recommend doing something similar to this the first year, or going ahead and buy a 36-in wright stand on for $135 a mo? Ultimately I want a stand-on. I love your videos and love seeing your progression. Very unselfish of you, sharing all your business acumen as you do. Much appreciated.

It really comes down to the need. Get what you need and what the lawns allow for. If there are no gates and a larger zero turn works, get that. If you need the smaller 36", get that. My suggestion is to wait until the need is there by either your current machine breaking or lawns changing. On the other hand, if you have a 36" now but find you have larger open areas and feel that a larger machine will make you work faster so you can take on more jobs, than get the larger machine. Try not to finance. If you do, plan to pay it back in the first year. A $6,000 mower can be paid back in 6 months at $1,000 per month. What do you have now? Bradley makes a good product for $5,000 and up, FYI.

How is everyone dealing with taxes?? After you've bought and paid for all your equipment, 70k with low over head means very few deductions! The more you cut your overhead, the more profit you make = getting killed in taxes at end of year. Taxes on 70k income for me is 13,900.
@shannonp4037
@shannonp4037 2 жыл бұрын
You need to write off mileage on the vehicle, all expenses on the equipment including gas, oil, trimmer line, repairs, blades/sharpening, advertising, flyers/business cards, shirts, cleaning of "uniforms", cell phone since it is business expense, some internet if used for business, your computer if used for business, insurance on the equipment as well as your liability insurance, car washing (maybe), and anything else you use at some point for business. However, you still get hit with taxes. Typically at 20% plus your Social Security contribution at 15% (I think). So 35% should be budgeted. You paying $13,900 is about 20% of the $70,000. Sounds about right if done right. That is why legit businesses charge "so much". Basically, I'd say an easy breakdown for income versus expenses is 25% to operational expenses, 25% to salary, 25% to taxes and 25% to business net profit.

Is the Kholer motor ok as opposed to the Kawasaki? I plan on purchasing the Hustler this year along with a guy to help me with marketing...

Yes, Kholer makes a good engine as well. Don't get too caught up in the equipment... they're all going to cut grass. Just get something that is within your budget and spend the rest on marketing and flyers.

I disagree, if your good with a trimmer you can make a cleaner, faster edge and it's better because you don't have to switch to a second piece of equipment. edgers I only use for new properties with overgrown sidewalks. edgers also make a mess if it's wet unlike a trimmer.

Star View Landscaping I agree. Been in business for 20 years. Only use an edger on new property. I weld a 1/2 inch square steel bar to each end of edger blade makes a nice wide Groove. After that I use weed eater to Edge as fast as I can walk

What is a stick edger? You can barely see the end of it at the 4:05 mark. Is that what the stores call them? Later in the video, you call ALL the stuff hanging on the wall 'stick equipment.' I'm confused. Is it stick edger, stick weedeater, and stick edger? I've had guys with backpack style STIHL blowers tell me that they're TOO strong in that with too much air, you can't control where the grass goes. I've used a hand held before and I don't know how the backpack style would speed up the process if the handheld blows as fast as I can walk. All any of them seem to do is blow the grass back into the nice pretty groove that I created along the concrete, filling it up and taking away from the appearance. I don't know how you lined up enough customers the first year to earn $70K. I'm in a large enough town to have plenty of real estate to cover (I only need to specialize in one quadrant of the city if I get even a tiny % of the yards there), and there's no amount of cheap advertising (craigslist, signs on a stake, business cards passed out door-to-door) that would get anywhere near that much business. I tried putting out cards once in a neighborhood of hundreds of houses and only got 2 yards out of a large area. Do you recommend insisting that houses in the same neighborhood be done on the same day once your schedule is full and you can pick and choose your customers? It seems that would really increase productivity when you don't have to go back again on another day to the same place that's not near your home. You should type the names of the equipment brands in your comments. It's not easy to understand what you're saying if the person doesn't already know the brand, like Gravely, and then the brand of edger racks which I couldn't understand. There's NOTHING wrong with that setup, just starting out or not. I was planning on something a lot less elaborate than that. (smaller trailer with no edger racks). Where will you dump the hedge trimmings after you haul them off on the trailer? It would take a ton of way overgrown hedges to even cover the bottom of the trailer. Does anyone have that many hedges that you need 2' sides? Are you trimming hedges on more than one customer per day? I 'm wondering how you keep up with your customers if the riding mower breaks and goes in the shop. Do you put it in neutral and get help to push it onto the trailer to take it to the shop? How do you cut all those yards with the 21" push mower if your schedule was already booked? Then if it rains while the riding mower is in the shop, it just compounds the problem. I wish someone would talk about that. If you do, please give me the name of the video so I can watch it. We you say 'we' at the 10:20 mark and other places, who is 'we?' Did you have help in making that $70K? Was that YOUR take home pay, or was it totally revenue that had to be split with other people. If you worked alone, then there was no 'we' so I'm confused. You averaged $50 per yard (10 yards @$500/day) and that rate just isn't obtainable for yards that size in my area. When you say $175K with two helpers, how do 3 people at one house divy up the work? One mows, one edges, then what is the 3rd doing? One does the front yard while another does the back? On a small yard especially, it's not worth splitting the money with the 3rd guy. What do you do in general if one guy finishes before the other?
