Hello! After applying sand top dressing (half m3 /100m2) and smoothing it with a leveling rake, I noticed that no matter how I tried to level the area, tender thin and weak horizontally lying blades of grass remain under the sand, despite the fact that I cut it extremely short. Should I worry about them, or will they come out after a few days? They emerge as a result of a water jet (or water sprayed from half a meter away), but this slightly erodes the effect of leveling because it re-excavates the area filled with sand between the larger clumps of old grass, and can also displace upturned seeds and fertilizer particles. So far, I have applied only half of the planned amount of top dressing, I don't dare to spread more, I would like to wait until the grass grows a little (I cut it into short pieces before aerating the lawn). At the same time, I don't think I can wait too long, because I sowed fast-germinating seeds, and once the new grass comes, it shouldn't be necessary to loosen the soil. What do you advise? Thank you very much in advance!

It should grow through. Get a leaf rake and rake through the entire lawn. The agitation of the sand will expose a lot more blades of grass. I’ve got a video dropping here soon showing the effects of this.

This is exactly what I am trying to figure out! I'm even in Utah County with probably the same soil and grass. I think my poor neglected lawn needs to be dethatched, scarified, fertilized, and leveled, but I wasn't sure what order to do it in. Do you recommend aerating even after scarification and dethatching? Thank you!

Yes, especially if you are in Utah. Our soil sucks. The thatch can limit available water and nutrients from hitting the soil. Then aerating will open up that soil again allowing further uptake of water and nutrients. If you over fill these holes with sand you’re basically changing the soil a bit with the sand amendment. Even if you’re not topdressing with sand these practices annually make a huge difference.

@@HomegrownHowToThanks for the quick reply! Is there a certain type of sand mixture or top dressing you recommend for our crappy soil in Spanish? Also, which dethatching/scarifying tool do you recommend? I can't find a Sun Joe for sale anywhere, even online or KSL. I'm okay with corded or whatever. Thanks again!

@@kulangflow screened masonry sand is the best. Geneva Rock sells this. You can also use play sand. The finer the better. Greenworks corded is the only other I’ve used. It works but not as good as the sunjoe. Just do double the passes if you get the Greenworks. I’m sure any dethatcher is fine, they’re all probably coming out of the same factory in China anyways.
