Summer lawn watering can be done on various schedules but when a longer dry drought moves in, your focus should be on saving your lawn. In this video Doc explains his daily short watering program which will use less water and often save your lawn.

Could you do a video on managing flower beds and methods to keep Bermuda out of them? I’ve looked a bit and didn’t see any videos here specifically on that topic

Has nothing to do with the grass type.....it's the soil type you have that's key on the watering method you use.

Hi Doc, thank you for another timely and informative video. I just eradicated a family of moles that were destroying my Bermuda lawn, and I've never seen you do a video on this issue. I have lots of long tunnels just under the surface of the sod, what do you suggest I do to repair my yard? Thanks, your videos have turned my yard from being the worst to one of the best in the neighborhood!

I'd rather do it naturally via biochar and organic matter. Using a polymer on the soil is just something I don't want to do.

Is the dollar spot fungus from too much water? I was assuming it had to do with me not aerating. I put down the fungus control last week and no results yet.

I water every other day for 20 minutes and I had/have so many bare spots because the previous owner didn’t take care of the lawn (i have Buffalo/st Augustine grass in the front) and it has done an exceptional job at filling in the bare spots! The neighborhood does the deep cycle and his yard took a turn for the worst! He does once a week for like an hour and it’s at like 7 at night! What a terrible time to water!

Doesn’t watering frequently for short periods promote a shallow root system though?
@HowTowithDoc

Bermuda roots can easily be 14 - 40 inches deep. It's really not the issue. During normal times, yes, cool season lawns it applies.

Does this hold true if the lawn is in rough shape? Have Bermuda throughout my back but have been fighting off saturation and run off issues. Just making sure this works when those other issues are present.

Its better to water 2x a week at a half in each time. Those periods of no rain will cause the grass to grow deeper roots searching for water. If you water everyday your grass will have very shallow root systems
@HowTowithDoc
@HowTowithDoc 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, established Bermuda lawns have roots that are 14 - 40 inches deep. Root DEPTH is not the issue. The issue, which is covered in the video, is sub-surface problems such as roots, rocks, construction debris, etc.

@@HowTowithDoc that’s the problem. Some of the lawn is established Bermuda, there are some other types mixed about in the shade. I’m trying to turn the tide on what was root rot due to water compaction. Had no gutters, that is fixed. We had had a ton of rain/ice this winter, exposed many problem areas. I swear that ice storm literally moved mud feet away from where it was. So much mud that some of the Bermuda was fully covered. I have fixed this, but does more short watering still ok when the presence of rot has popped up? I keep digging it out, using the right compost to fill in the areas. There is just so much impaction from water and the lack of care from the previous owner that it had been overwhelming to control.

Only problem with watering for short periods everyday like that will keep your grass roots short. They need the periods of dryness so they grow their roots deeper looking for water. When you water every day the water stays at the top so the roots don't go down searching for more water.

@@HowTowithDoc and not allowing water to go deep wont cause those roots to come back up to the surface where the water is? Or do you get enough heavy rains thats not an issue?
@HowTowithDoc

No... keep in mind that 1" of water applied slowly to clay soils only goes 4 inches deep. 1" is a LONG RUN... about an hour per head.

How is the root health of your grass using daily waterings? As I understood it, long, infrequent watering helps promote deeper roots. My wife loves your pool and fence. Many of products the American KZfaq lawn guys use are simply not available in Canada. Today I applied some Pacific sea kelp from a Vancouver company called Kelp Man.
