In this video I find a slightly misplaced flywheel key is the problem to making the pull cord kickback. It may have been a pattern part that didn't quite fit.

God I hate when this happens, a while back this happened and the pull cord handle got caught on my finger nail and ripped it clean off, the pain was unbelievable so in a blind fit of rage I destroyed the lawnmower with a sledgehammer straight after it happened

You saved the day! The flywheel key to my mower looked to be in the right spot so I didn't take the flywheel off. But I was curious after watching your video and it was sheered in half and slightly misaligned! Thank you so much!

Thanks for the video, my mower was having a serious kickback problem, almost broke my wrist. The flywheel key was slightly turned like in your video, took the flywheel off, flipped the key around, aligned it, and it works like a champ now. Very good instructions, thanks again ! !

Wow I have the same issue and looked at the key, it looked aligned but after watching this video I now know it slightly moved, I will follow your procedure and hope to fix the kickback! I don't much like the design of tecumseh keys, prefer the briggs.

Thanks so much! I don't know how but our mower kept running fine after the key sheared. Next time my husband tried to start it he got his arm "pulled off". He tried 3 times. He couldn't understand how it could work just fine until the next time he tried to start it. I found your video and that is what it was! How it still ran just fine after the key sheared is a mystery. It only took 95 cents (less than a dollar) to fix it! He has been using it for 3 hours now. Still working. So much better than a new mower! Thanks again!

Ah very informative, maybe this is why my old toro snowthrower snaps back after the 1st or second pull, nearly tore my bloody arm off. I stick to the electric start in colder temps.

I see how the flywheel key is skewed @ 5:30. This maybe why my arm was pulled violently during a cold start this fall season. I took the flywheel off in the spring to observe the kill switch and may have not reassembled it properly. Did not know this could be so critical in regards to timing. I was able to start after cleaning the carburetor bowl, but did not to keep running, would sputter and backfire too. Thanks buddy, for the helpful video.

Yes, it can cause the kickback. Also make sure you only start it with the blade on. Some people remove the blade to sharpen it and try to start a mower with the blade off and this will also cause kick back. Cheers Martin

I have this problem with a Toro Recycler self propelled mower with a 6.5 Tecumseh engine. The timing was terrible too, it was working when I loaded it up to sell it and it had the problem right as I was trying to sell it. The pull cord recoiled so hard to snapped back around the handle and busted open my thumb at the knuckle. Second time (silly me for trying again, but the guy was standing right in front of me with cash in hand and I needed to show him it worked) hit the same area, just an inch lower and my hand was swollen and almost useless for days. Being whipped with the pull handle like that, I'm lucky it didn't break a bone. Anyway, the flywheel key is on its way from Amazon and hopefully that should fix it. I hear it's not an uncommon problem in these larger 6+ HP Tecumseh engines.

Thanks awesome video! I have a briggs sprint 375 which i have only got started once, and it screamed, which was the starter rubbing on the crankshaft, so fixed that with cleaning and auto transmission fluid. It doesnt start at all now and has some serious kickback. I will try this out and let you know how i go. Btw i found this mower on the side of the road, and i havent used it for my own uses, if that makes sense.

So simple and yet I didn't even think about the key being sheared. I have a engine that they sump cover had broken and the engine would shake. I knew that the owner had it something very hard to crack the sump cover. I had to replace the cover and check out the cam. I thought the cam was lose and would not time correctly. I will check this out in a few hours and let you know if the key is the culprit.

So the key was a total mess. Now that it pops, the blade adapter made by MTD is going to be a challenge since there is only a NSN on the frame of the snapper mower.

I grabbed a mower with a blown head gasket. $10 later it's running but vibrated like a sob . Yanked the cord and killed my fore arm. Was about to toss it but now.. runs great . Thank you . 10 years later

The key question when this problem crops up is to ask: "what did you hit?" Always check blade for balance and straightness as well.

My briggs and stratton starter was so hard to pull and occasionally kicked back, which nearly broke my hand. Then the recoil bit eventually stopped recoiling.

I have a Honda GX200 and Subaru engines both in power washers backfiring and kicking back, the damn Subaru sometimes start but when kickback take the pulling handle off my hand and hurts my fingers, im going to check em this week it is probably same failure. Thank you for the video.

hi next time you pull the flywheel off ,put the nut on and leave a 5mm gap when the flywheel pops it won't have the puller fly off and maybe drop the alloy fly wheel all the best brian

Great job! Thank you. I've heard something recently that is very counterintuitive: the less the timing is out (but it IS out), i.e. the smaller the degree to which the key and slot are misaligned, the GREATER the kickback. What do you think? I have a three wheel brushcutter, AS Motor, a beast, which frightened me with its violence. I 've read that kickback can injure people for a YEAR! Well, I looked at the key of this brute and it looked fine to me, but I was looking for an obvious misalignment thinking for a kickback like that it must be seriously misaligned. Some professionals have said you need to pull like a man, man! Erm, no thank you. I like my shoulder just where it is. I've refused even to look at the thing for the past 5 years as I walk past it. thanks for the heart..this was actually the problem wiht mine..the key was offplace and there was some shredding so i centered it and got rid of debris that was in there and it works fine now..thanks for the video

i have exactly the same Tecumseh engine, it's 30 years old! every year i change the oil, what ever oil left over from the car, wash the sponge air filter and clean the spark plug. '19 was sponge airfilter for the first time changed with ney sponge. and i sharpen the knife (4-th knife) and party can go on for the whole year!!!!

I had the kickback problem, pulled my flywheel off , the shear key seemed ok, put a new shear key anyway, started the engine, same problem, took the flywheel off again, noticed the ignition coil was slightly rubbing on the flywheel, one of the screws that secure it was slightly loose ,set the clearance 0.012 of inch. Put everything together, started with no problems

I had a kickback problem recently. It turned out to be the exhaust valve was way out of spec. Kawasaki FJ180v engine.

If it's not the key I have found valve gaps need adjusted then they fire up no bother . And it hurts when they recoil

It happen to me today,i watch ur video and checked the flywheel key is ok..then adjust valve clearance still kick back...the problem is the spring auto decompression located at my camshaft is broken

Any problem with ignition or valve timing could produce a kickback problem. Your's is not a common problem. Well done for finding it. Cheers Martin

Fantastic video, I have done the same job on my mower, the key seemed ok so as you have done I’ve gone through this process, but it still starts poorly, hard to pull over kicks a bit. Any other problems I should be looking for?

Are you trying to start it without the blade on as that will cause it to kick back too

I tried this today. My key was probably sheared a bit, it was hard to see. But I replaced it anyway. Next, I adjusted the valves to the factory spec and I still have the kick back. What could be the issue? I forgot to mention my blade adaptor key did shear off and am waiting for a replacement to arrive. Could the lack of the blade at the moment cause the kickback? I am guessing the lack of inertia of the blade which can also act as a flywheel for the engine.

I must be the unlucky one lol......I took the top off and had a look at the key before removing it and it looked to me to be ish in line to a nats nacker but i could see the key had turned round on its self....Its a Briggs and Stratton...3.5 i think....On this its just a flat key but bigger one side so it fits in snug. So any way i pulled the top off had a clean up put the key in the right way put it back on and started it....Unlucky for me it still kicks like a horse.. When you pull it over very slow its trying to fire up. Its like the timing is spot on like too spot on. I looked at the coil on it and i cant see any way of just advancing it or retiring it.. Looks like i may just have to live with it...

+Rodger Le Bonk There is no adjustment on those mowers. You may want to check the valve gaps as well. That's all I can think of. Cheers Martin

At least yurs was not self weld to the shaft in that slot key was fused in could knock it out had to put Dremel on it to get it out!!!

Fantastic Sir.....I just bought a mower tonight name fails me...Any way a lady sold me a mower and hedge cutter for 10 pounds tonight but i gave her 20 ...Any way when i was there she said i cant start it because it kick and hearts my arm... So i loaded it up and got it home. Hedge cutter started as soon as i got petrol in it. Ma cullock that one is...The mower is a bit cheeper....Any way i put oil in it cleaned the plug clean petrol forgot about the air filter but i tried to start it....Chug chug...Primed it again...Chug chug whollop it near took me arm off.. Any way i gave it a couple more pulls and it started.. Runs nice but the Governor goes up and down a little bit on it but i think i will leave that alone...After watching your video i thought i would have a quick look at the blade...They had gave it some shit...As luck has it my old one will fit it....Its getting dark now so tomorrow i am going to get a puller and take a look...I bet my last pound its what you say here.....With any luck it will be that and the mower will at least last me for the next season. ....I use to get all my mowers from the local Recycling yard 5 pound a time but they have now closed all the yards so its getting harder lol

Can't really say from that description. Are you lifting the brake handle whilst pulling the cord (if it has one) ?

The screeching sound might be a result of a starter clutch problem (usually on older Briggs & Stratton engines).Over time the clutch (attached under the recoil starter) gets gummed up and needs to be removed and cleaned of any grease, etc. that has accumulated over time. It makes a fearful screeching noise! There is a starter clutch removal tool that B&S sells that makes clutch removal easy with use of a breaker bar or impact gun. There is a felt pad at the top of the clutch shaft that needs a couple of drops of oil to keep things running properly.

Bugger me i found out what it was by pure mistake......As i had only just got it all i did was try to see if it would start and never even thought about trying to cut the grass.....So today i thought ok sod the kick back i will sharpen the blade up and that will do us for next season.....I started it pushed it on the grass a bit and i thought thats a bit odd it dont seem to be cutting proper. I thought oh well i have to take the blade of so sod it....Turned the mower over and went to undo the bolt and i noticed the blade was moving around a bit on that aluminum block thing that holds it in place. So any way i tapped the bolt with a hammer until it came loose and took it off. On that aluminum block as you no is 2 little lugs that sit in side 2 little holes in the blade to stop it spinning around by its self. They had snapped off. And i presume thats were they hit a brick. So i did a little DIY and drilled those 2 holes out and put 2 little bolts in and 2 nuts on the end. They are the kind of bolts that will sheer off should i hit a brick.,,,,Any way i got it all back on let it stand for 10 minutes so as to let most of the oil fall back down and started it...NO KICK back.. Ran it for a good 10 minutes to let the smoke clear from the exhaust were the oil had sat. Turned it off then started it again. No kick back...So i can only think that it was the loose blade that was chucking the engine out of sink a bit and as i pulled the cord and the engine was trying to fire i think the blade was trying to go back on its self and that caused the kick back...

+Rodger Le Bonk Yes, That's the problen. If you try and start a lawnmower without a blade on, It will kick back. This is because the blade acts as a flywheel but as your blade was loose, the blade was not acting as a flywheel and hence the kick back. I would have mentioned this but I assumed that the blade was in situ and bolted down. You'll have no more problems with kick back now. Nice one. Cheers Martin

i think you have this wrong my honda engine 15 hp kept doing this its the valvs on the cylinder head the gap was to big you need feeler gages to set them again mine works fine now

Yes,the valves can also cause that problem but it's mostly caused by the blade hitting something and knocking the timing out by shearing the key

the woodruff key in my mowers are made of mild steel shearing i have not seen may be i'm lucy

The woodruff keys on the blade boss are normally mild steel and the top flywheel ones should be aluminum. This is the one that will shear if you hit something so it will throw the ignition timing out so the mower can't run.

I see why they went out of business. Those are the sorriest motors I’ve ever worked on. So far it has attacked me three times. Got bruises all over my right side where it ripped the handle out of my hand and slapped me. Just replaced the flywheel and key set valves and it still will kick back. Think I might use it for target practice. Got where I’m scared to try to start it again. Tecumseh trash the flywheel isn’t much more then aluminum foil. Glad they went out of business never have had a problem like this with a Briggs & Stratton. Good ridden Tecumseh 💩💩💩

My 1984 Toro 20672 with its Tecumseh-built TNT100 engine and BBC (blade brake/clutch) still works great, ever since I had a new carb installed for it in 2013.

You got lucky that flywheel did not crack, removing it way you did. Maybe came of so easy, because the key was not broken. I was not so lucky trying to remove flywheel the same way. (because of ignorance, I did not watche any video or instruction, it just siemed natural way to remove it) But my flywheel cracked, and you should NEVER use cracked flywheel. The engine will run, but damaged flywheel is a bomb that can explode at any moment and seriouslie injure or kill someone. I found new flywheel for free from a dead engine. You can pull using those 3 holes in the middle, or pry flywheel with a screwriler or other instrument (not too hard). And tap the axel. It should come of aftrer 3 to 5 gentle taps.
