This video takes you through a lawn irrigation installation from start to finish. It's a lot to put in a video so I have put timestamps should you want to go to a certain section of the video.
This video isn't monitised due to the background music coming from the worker's stereo playing, so to support this channel please like, subscribe and watch some other videos on my page and be sure to share the love.
Check out the overview of the parts that I used. Weathermatic are a Reece Irrigation and Pools product and only available from their stores.

The aim of this video is to share this irrigation installation with hope that it will teach you, inspire you and give you confidence to have a go at irrigation. It is hard work moving earth but the rewards are far greater for the garden, your pocket, using less water and helping the environment.

A backflow device should be used on any cross connection to a potable and non potable water source. The sprinkler system is considered a non potable water source an rpz, double check, avb, or pvb valves are sufficient sources backflow devices for irrigation systems. Also a master valve is extremely important as it removes the constant pressure from the main line. I know in this install your mainline is only about 5ft but those who tie into a water source other than your hose bib will have a much larger main line..

I would have moved the tap so it wasn’t in the middle of the lawn. And stipping the wires when putting them into the scotchlocks (gel caps) not needed and in fact could cause issues in the future. Those things are designed to put an insulated wire in, then when crimped a v shaped blade comes down on the wire and slices the insulation to make contact with the wire. The insulation helps keep it in. Striping it before it may not hold as tightly as it should which could lead to a loose connection.

Any irrigation system supplied from scheme water requires at a minimum a dual check valve to prevent backflow this is why plumbers need to do the cut in/connection to scheme supply. A master solenoid valve is also required to be installed as a fail safe on the system. Using low density poly pipe as a mainline and subjecting it to constant pressure (as has been done in this install) is a failure waiting to happen. Control cables for valves should be buried under pipework, as it is easily damaged by digging/coring/renovation work. Articulated risers are all the go.

Thanks for those comments. I’ll look into it.

Yes, very surprised they used LDPE for the main line. No back flow as well would be a no go here in NSW. No need to strip the wires going into the gel wire joiners. Apart from that a good how to video.

Have you ever heard of companies that actually mark the location of the pipes?? It seems like most companies do not bother with that. Extremely important to know where the pipes are located. it's so ridiculous that so many companies don't bury a wire or mark them on a map or something. Anything.

@@lawnporn thanks. I used to do utility locating. I'm amazed that everything in the ground is mapped on computers and also wired for locating, and water lines have nothing. So any future repairs or landscaping are going to be extremely painful for the homeowner. Which could be avoided with measurements or maybe $20 worth of wire. 😀

i’m kicking myself i didn’t think to put in a simple irrigation system when i did the back yard. it’s only about 50m2 of lawn but still a pain to do by hand and a funny shape so a single or even double sprinkler won’t do it. might have to look into installing a system at the same time as doing a reno next season would only need to be 1 zone i think so should be pretty straight forward and hopefully can keep the damage to a minimum.

I'm an 19 year vet of irrigation... Residential and commercial multi-wire and two wire well and geothermal irrigation systems. What I am seeing right off the bat is they trenched the lines in instead of a vibroplow which pulls the line in and when the soil settles you cannot tell where they are....second I would not use those valve tie ins because they are not reliable. Your going to end up with leaks near the valves.
@lawnporn
@lawnporn 2 жыл бұрын
Massive thanks for this comment. Great information! I’m not sure what a vibroplow is, had a search (I’m in Australia 🇦🇺) and couldn’t find the info but I can report the tie ins to the valves have ruptured once and been replaced unfortunately with the same setup. I’ll look to fix that soon and blueline to the tap with a plumber as that is regulation where I live.
@Gen-Xgamer
@Gen-Xgamer 2 жыл бұрын
www.ditchwitch.com/trenchers/vibratory-plows/vp30 This is a vibroplow...it pulls the lines in instead of trenching...with trenching you have to leave the soil lumped up so when it settles it doesn't leave lines in the soil as indentions. Here in the states or places that earth quakes and hi humidity and then extreme dry conditions the ground moves and vibrates when the system kicks on and off so we use sch 40 pvc main line with 100 psi poly lines after the valves with swing pipe for head connection.

I have 40 fruit trees in my back yard I'd like to put a drip system on. I'll need to run about 250ft of blank line to reach them all. My question is, how many 1 gph brips can I run at one time? I have about 65lbs of pressure on my faucet. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for this content!!! I’m applying to the irrigation crew where I work and this video will help. I’ve never done irrigation before but I did work at a truck wash where I performed maintenance ( around 10 years), and this is similar to what I did. Is there any other advice that you could give me to help my chances?
@lawnporn
@lawnporn 3 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! As other commenters have pointed out, the tap to the irrigation box needs to be done by a plumber. Unfortunately at the tie of making this video, I was missing one bit to make the connection using the blue line pipe so a temp fix with just normal irrigation line was used. Other than that, as you have worked in the car wash, just think that water flows in a line, if something is not working up the line then something is wrong before ii. Good luck with job app!!

Hi Mark. I don’t believe there is a direct link unfortunately. The best thing to do is to speak to your local Reece Irrigation store. Go to Reece.com.au to find the store closest. They can also send via post. I would assume that all Reece irrigation stores have those riser kits but if not, I got mine from Reece Irrigation & Pools in Adelaide.
