why wouldnt he? here in britain any rugby player or fan really rates the south africans very highly. here in ulster weve had many SA players over the last 10 years. ruan pienaar is practically a god here, as is johann muller. and if he keeps up the form he is in then marcell Coetzee will soon be joining them

I would have to agree - I watched Sid Going, Grant Batty & Bryan Williams at Newlands and still have vivid memories of Bryan Williams running with ball in hand - there is no atmosphere to beat this match up. Interestingly & bizarrely enough my team Western Province beat the AB's 12-11 in 76.

I have to agree, on this tour South Africa scored 9 tries to 3 and still lost the series. Joel Stransky missed almost all his kicks whereas Jenkins missed nothing. Unsung hero for sure. One of the games the Boks scored 3 tries to zero and lost. Stransky never played for South Africa again.

I remember going to the Lions match at Lancaster park, and being down on the fence on the embankment. I was amazed at how white JPR Willams' legs were, and the smell of linament. I was also amazed at the stream of urine flowing down into the gutter along the front of the fence....ah the good old days. I also recall the bright ribbons and rosettes and badges that you sold ! They were displayed on bits of cardboard I think...

He also had to reinvent himself as a player from a fast, mobile and dynamic loose forward to a tight close-quarter specialist No 8 after an ankle injury. Dallaglio also had the ability to manipulate refs and like all greatest loose forward trios, he was part of a trinity which contained Neil Back the prototype of a then 7, who had given McCaw and before then Jones et al a good run for his money despite his size and Richard Hill. Now, Hill, in my opinion, was the best forward rugby had ever seen, McCaw IMO was phenomenal and the best 7 I have seen on a pitch. Hill, on the other hand, was the best forward player no matter what and without him, Woodwards England side would not have ascended to their heights. Back to Dallaglio. The only No 8s I felt could have challenged him at his peak time (before Read so relax) where: Scott Quinnell (who was the best in ball carrying department throughout the world at 8 at one stage), Simon Taylor (before injury), Anthony Foley while good was not as influential as Dallaglio, and then later both Parisse and Harinordoquy. NZ has had some of the best loose forwards ever, but Dallaglio falls into that category for what he too did to games.

@@sonnyblack6121 Wayne Shelford, was like 15-20 years before Dallaglio, no one can actually analyse his games instead you're stating this based of the reputation of HAKA building and ripped bollocks and yes he was a hard bastard but the game was different then. Kaino was after Dallaglio same applied to Read both great athletes, but of a different era. However, both were taller and faster being able to play at 4,6 & 8. Read too like Dallaglio had the best players in their positions around his consistently. However, Read once he lost his zip towards the end could not tighten his game as well as Dallaglio did as a No 8 and found himself belittled by papers and under pressure for Savea to be selected. Brooke while famous for his drop goal antics, could not perform the tight antics. Sunshine player but he did set the skillset for No 8s to the next level but it can be argued he was the first back row to play like a back more than a forward. Jerry Collins may he rest in peace was not as all rounded as Dallaglio and Hill. but he was a great defender, could carry well at times. He was a dream 6, hard, mobile and yet I'd say he was the pre-Kaino prototype in which Kaino learned and evolved his game from. Why because different eras. Josh Kronfield well he was an openside flanker I am talking about blindsides and No 8s primarily. Better than Neil Back maybe, but then again George Smith probably trumps both players. However, tries win games and Back did that more times than any other forward. Michael Jones too, predominately an openside, was more athletic than the rest and did do well when he converted to 6. End of the day its my opinion, you are welcome to yours but see past your NZ glory ideals and remember other loosies such as Pinnear, Dallaglio, Hill, Back, Burger also won world cups and are revered. Also if you want to compare players be reasonable with the time frame, We are talking 1990-2007 kinda frame with this context. I'm also not a professional athlete but half the time players get picked on reputation over ability, its rugby politics 101 from amateurs to professionals.
