Lawrence of Arabia transferred from the British Army to the RAF and arrived at RAF Mountbatten Plymouth Devon in 1925 as T.E.Shaw, he chose this name to avoid the attention of the press that had hounded him from his Lawrence of Arabia service day's
During his time at Mountbatten he would spend weekends with friends in Thurlestone and South Milton, staying in a property Savernake overlooking South Milton Sands and Thurlestone Rock.
During his service time at Mountbatten he worked on the development of high speed rescue launches which would later in Wartime achieve speeds of 40 mph and rescue over 13,000 air crew from ditched aircraft in the freezing cold English Channel and North Sea.

My dad started an apprenticeship with Rolls Royce as an aero engine fitter during WW2, a large part of it between RAF Mountbatten and RAF Roborough.

Thank you for this, I knew about Lawrence at Mountbatten but not his staying at Thurlestone. I’ve visited Cloud’s Hill. Strange place. Very brave and inventive man. He was completely undermined by the Allies - governments misbehaved even then. Lean’s film captures it all very well. Great to see a Supermarine Walrus in action! Top story 🤩

Very interesting - thanks! That Walrus crew were doing well, having rescued 8 crews from a B-17, and perhaps a few more later... Have subscribed.

Hi! An enjoyable collection of filming, photographs and archive footage. Regarding the wording above, it was actually in 1929 that TEL transferred to RAF Cattewater, Plymouth, on his return from two years in India with the RAF. The station changed its name later that year to RAF Mount Batten (note two words, not one). By then, he had been using the name 'Shaw' for six years, and the press already knew fully well who he was!
