my JUNKYARD 5.4 Mustang Motor is TOAST: carnage inside

I found CARNAGE inside my brand new engine. I bought this 5.4 DOHC ford mod motor from a junkyard, and had intended to install it in my Mustang project after freshening up a few simple things. I decided to open it up and see what's inside just to be on the safe side, but I'm glad I did. I found normal wear and tear damage on the timing components of this Lincoln Navigator engine, but once I pulled the heads off and the rods out, I found something that stopped me in my tracks.
So, the new question is how much power can we get out of this engine with more compression, more cubic inches, and better cams? We've decided to push the goal post out a bit further and see if we can make 400 whp from an old school dinosaur modular motor while keeping it naturally aspirated!

Looks like the previous owner didn't keep up on regular oil changes and probably run the hell out of it. On another topic, you do know you can get a drain pan that fits on the legs of your engine stand. It's better than having to keep a mop handy.

The Navi and 03-04 Cobra secondary timing gears are different from the later Shelby. You can use the Navi, Cobra Valve covers on Shelby but the Shelby Covers wont clear the larger Navi and Cobra gears and chain. Make sure you get the iron primary chain tensioners and not the plastic one. Also you can ditch the stock pan and Shelby windage trey for the Coyote pan and windage trey/gasket combo with only a small mod for the oil pan pickup tube. A stock oil pump with TSS billet gears and a metal back cover seems to be the best combo. Avoid the adjustable primary cam gears. Use the multiple keyway crank and cam sprockets or shim the stock cam gears. When putting the cam towers back on, you have to go down alittle on each at a time or they will snap right where the bridge starts. The 00' Cobra R Cams have alot of lift for a mod motor but duration was pretty low at 212@.050. You can go into the high 220s- low 230s and have really good drivability.

👍 on the 3Cs! I’d vote for the CNC work on the heads and set the compression as high as possible. When you turbocharge it, just plan on E85. With all that valve area, it won’t need a lot of cam, maybe upper 220s on the intake. This build looks very interesting! Thanks LT!

Like your content. Hate your giant tag lines to get attention. No “massive fail”. I worked for Ford Powertrain from 1998 through 2007. I watched the mod motor family grow from paper design to many iterations produced in Romeo and Windsor engine plants. As quality manager in Romeo, my organization tore down thousands of development, durability, and customer return engines. Aluminum bearings are unforgiving. Lead Babbitt will absorb foreign material and to some extent, self polish. Aluminum which meets debris results in a score mark proportional to the size of the contaminant. Then gets expelled and trapped in the filter. For 200k miles, those bearing looks great. The engine does need a rebuild, especially if your going to lean on it. If you measured the bearing clearance, I bet it wasn’t as bad as you make out. Hate the drama. Like the facts.

Excited about this build. I'd send those heads to Livernois for a quick CNC Job. Only charge $700 for it. Not a bad price. That with the extra cubes and 10:1 I think 400whp is reasonable. Think about a 5.3 LS, it has worse heads, less displacement, and yet people make 400whp with a heads/cam/intake package all the time with those.

@@chriswise1232 Not really, I've seen plenty of basic setups do it. Last 5.3 across the dyno I saw made 399whp. With Ported 799s, LS6 Intake and sloppy stage 2. Better cam and intake and it would've cleared 400whp easily.
@chriswise1232
@chriswise1232 Жыл бұрын
@@jonadkins9339 The difference between a 799 and a rec port head is about 30 fwhp on a 6.2L. A good porter will make 799s flow 290-300 cfm with the stock valve. They can't quite reach rec port numbers even with a slightly oversized valve. SS2, 799, and LS6 intake is worth 350 rwhp all day. Add another 20 for port work and I'm left to assume happy dyno.
@jordancomeaux6888

5.3 heads used to be considered trash but since their 58cc compared to the 243(ls2) heads which are 64cc I believe the compression advantage is huge, as in they make more horsepower and torque until basically 6000rpm by a mile or the lower end. Richard holdner(?) Did alot of research into this with a crazy amount of setups on a engine dyno.
@jonadkins9339
@jonadkins9339 Жыл бұрын
@@jordancomeaux6888 Ported 706s have been popular for a while now, with a 0.051 gasket on a LS1 you're looking 11:1 compression. They're 61cc btw. Not 58cc. And on mild cammed motors, the compression makes for a better torque curve and better throttle response. Obvious choice for a heavier truck.

Just picked up my first ever engine to tear down and rebuild, swap into my truck as a test build. Unknown mileage gen 3 5.3 that I'm converting to run with my gen 4 wiring harness and ECU in as much a plug and play build as possible, beat it to ensure I built it well enough to survive, then turbo & learn to tune ECU, upgrade the tranny to handle the added power. Simple goals, and mainly for building confidence before pursuing something along the lines of awd conversion turbo street/strip truck.

I also clean the floor with break cleaner. The 5.4 4v has all the basics you need for 400 whp NA. Your basic engine is in decent shape. Those bearings did their job. I would clean the block, check the bores and main bores. If it needs to be bored, fine. If not, ok. If the main bores are good, I wouldn't line hone it. I would measure the crank, and grind if needed. If not, I would carefully check all the bearing clearances. I would use good I beam rods (H beams are heavier and weaker than a proper I beam. The debate on this is absurd). Select an appropriate piston (I like DSS and Mahle). I would hone the bores with a torque plate, and deck the block square and equal. If possible, zero deck the block. Use a steel top and Napier second ring set. I would do whatever the heads need, checking the guides carefully. If the valves are in good shape I might re-use them. Cut the seats, surface, assemble with new seals and lash adjusters. Realistically, it will need better springs for both boost and aftermarket cams. Obviously you will need new chain guides, tensioner, and chains. I would go adjustable because I degree everything. Cobra oil pump and the right pickup gets you there. I didn't mention cams, because that's a conversation all it's own. I suppose we can do that. If you want to modify the heads, I would poly quad it before I ported it. I say all this as a professional engine builder with some modular experience. Really, your engine isn't all that bad, the situation could have been worse. I had suggested a 6.2 Boss before. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Great info I was hoping it was a Boss swap too.

All the comments placed on top of what you say were hilarious to see. I know it is serious but at same time it made me chuckle out loud.

I have a 99’ Navigator with this motor and same mileage, 178k. I will be watching this closely as there is not much aftermarket support for these. MMR makes an adapter plate set to use the 5.0 coyote intake on the 5.4 32v. You can bolt a coyote supercharger manifold on it!

14:44 i knew it. i did say on your last video you should go with option 2. im a mechanic myself with my family being a bunch of people who fix stuff. from now on tear everything down so your safe. cause this would have gotten way worse or even the engine snapping a rod(from what i know about this particular 5.4L, its an economy motor, not a powerhouse. the main problem is usually the oiling system from what i recall) plus the rods in these engines are actually weak.

Brother I can't wait to see how this goes. I have 3 or 4 Navigators in my you pull it and I have a 03 Crown Vic P71 I was thinking about 5.4L double cam swap and I also was thinking 6.0L Ls swapping. I would love to make 400 to 450 wheel horse power with a twin cam 5.4L instead of a Ls swaping. If I can do it for a bit less then a Ls swap. O r even just a bit more. Thank you brother. I WILL BE WAITING FIR UPDATES.

well in full disclosure, an LS Swap would def. be a lot cheaper, but I think the "Cool" factor is much higher with the 5.4 4v

I know you said that intake is had some custom work don't to it. Do they sell them like that or did you have it custom made. I may do the 5.4L 4 valve in my Vic. I think that intake would fit under the hood. And ate they pricey? Lol. Thank you for the help brother.

Omg no way you haven't sold the coppo truck yet? That is like my dream truck! I went to the link and saw what you were asking and I thought that was crazy cheap for what you have done to the truck. I wish I had that kind of money comma I would gladly give you your asking price!

I will never say the 5.4L is the best ford motor. But I will say that motor can be found in many E series service van with 200k+ on them.

I’d spring for a 4.415 stroker crank, clean the bore up .020, and have a solid base that’ll take the abuse you’ll inevitably put it through. In for a penny, in for a pound, I say…
