@@bb5242 I was going to say, whomever tuned that car last is to blame for sure. With the cam, bet they raised the lmiter to like 7500 and it was singing well past its capability when it went boom.
@lukewalker1051
@lukewalker1051 Жыл бұрын
And aside from possibly installing the cam in wrong, Greg didn't miss a gear and/or launch the motor or run the engine out of oil. Also, could have been retuned lean. A myriad of reasons the engine could have failed that had nothing to do with the integrity of the LS7 as it was built from the factory. People kill engines due to abuse more than they randomly fail. Most common failure is low oil level + high RPM. Mods can kill an engine too and tuning. When you modify an engine that has adequate power like a stock LS7 which is plenty on the street, be careful what you wish for. PS. Chris is very talented with wonderful temperament, methodical etc...all the right stuff including young and strong...but I cringe when I see engine work this extensive with nothing covering the fenders for protection. I know, he will run the orbital over the paint when all done but only takes one dropped wrench. Or...maybe the plan is a repaint. Paint doesn't look too bad to my eye but he may have other plans....from the peanut gallery.

LS7 exhaust valve seat wasn’t machined concentric to the valve guide thanks to Linamar Corporation who machined the heads for GM. Exhaust valve fatigues and breaks off. Destroys #2 piston and the entire LS7. That’s why I got both of my heads reworked by LPE.

On the LS7, it’s the exhaust valve that has the hollow stem and failure prone. The intake valves are titanium and usually wasn’t the issue.

@natez0690

It’s not the valve, it’s the valve guide and valve seat that weren’t machined concentric to each other. Linamar Corporation machined the heads for GM and their(GM’s) quality control didn’t catch it or overlooked the problem. Valve heads don’t fall off just because they have a hollow stem. They break off from contact with the piston, over-rev/valve float, or in this instance poorly machined valve seats that fatigue the valve stem.
@TheWolfMatt
@TheWolfMatt Жыл бұрын
@@natez0690 100% correct. That's the LS7 valving issue that these are known for. Though, most of the time, they only kiss the piston after the valve works its way to the point of contact. This one looks like it took the valve and decided to play dodge ball with the rods and crank at, or around, 7k rpm. That's a lot of energy transfer if things aren't working smoothly.

I'm in the same boat with you right now. I picked up a C5 ZO6 a month ago with the same issue. Previous owner blew up the motor and I was able to get the car for a steal. The valve spring broke, which is common on the LS6. Completely took out piston number one, valve, and a hole through the block. I was able to source a low mileage long block and in the middle of currently putting everything together. Good luck with yours!

When i saw you got this z06 for 15k i was a bit jealous, going through the steps building my 08z i realized how big of a financial commitment it is. I bought mine for around 42 grand and drove it for around 3 weeks before it spun a combination of 5 or 6 bearings, engine is totally gone; crank, cam, cylinder walls, pistons/ rods, and even the heads were crazy out of wack. I went from thinking I already kind of got ripped on this 42 thousand dollar 80k mile z06 which i thought was sort of clean to when its said and done around a 60k z06. Im doing everything right though, going fully forged, sleeved, max effort h/c/i and ill probably go for a 150 shot. Cant wait to see what you'll do with this z

I've got 2 C6Z's as well. I'm about to put my 3rd engine into the '08 track car. I've seen the exact same carnage. First blowup was on the stock engine after changing the differential and the gear ratio. Had to pull plugs to finally see that it was blown. I built it up with the 2nd engine (Texas Speed), and when it blew, the block disintegrated, but I guess the extra HP makes the carnage bigger. 3rd engine will also be TSP and will go in over xmas break. 2nd C6Z is a 2009 3LZ garage queen, all stock. 39k miles. Mine was a dropped valve both times, and I had the heads rebuilt and hardened before the first grenade, so go figure.

At 9,400 miles I went way overboard. Crower shaft rockers, refurbished intakes, Del West used to do it for free, SS hollow stem exhaust valves, new springs, retainers and keepers. Threw out the buckets and went with link bar lifters. Having a junk head so the machine shop can test their math before working on a good head is helpful. I also put in a 4.10 gear when they came out years ago. Heads done in spring of 2016, put it to bed this fall with plus 30,000. Good luck, saw this exact example in the garage at the Vette museum in 2019.

My money is on the "drysump"-system. It's well known that the stock system can't keep up with high Gs on the track, especially with (Semi-)Slicks. On the early engines especially, it's a problem with the scavenge stage of the oil pump. This results in aerated oil. The scavange-stage simply can't keep up with the pressure side. This is why they superseded the pump to the LS9 which moved a little more oil. Greetings from Germany! EDIT: Ok. After seeing the crank, my best bet is now the exhaust valve =D.
