I'm a very new beekeeper and caught a swarm in May 2020 and keeping them in a horizontal langstroth hive. I'm probably going to build a couple of layens hives this winter and be ready for the spring swarm season. this is great information!!! thanks for sharing!!!

Beautiful hive! Dr. Leo would be proud of your work and demo. You did an excellent job of demonstrating the ease of use of the Layens/deep hive minimal disturbance, and also how to harvest. I think that if we respect the bees they will provide even more just as you're doing. I am encouraged to do this now. Thanks and I subscribed. PS: Effective use of cameras and side comments.

Melissa, don't get me wrong. there is nothing wrong with crush and straining. the end product is always pure honey. my point is, there is more money to benifit you by cut comb honey then jarred honey. too many additives can be slipped into honey for extra profit by scrupulous people. cut comb is as honest as the day is long. when you have RETURN customers they trust you. if you use hoggs half comb method you can boost this method by being able to claim that this honey was never touched by human hands. thank you Melissa for your comment.

We bought a used extractor for $400-paid for itself the first year in man hours and bee hours saved building new comb. We used it a couple a years then sold it for what we paid for it and bought a $1k extractor. The new one paid for itself same year. We've been using it 7 or 8 years now. Granted we don't have layens, but I built a similar hive that holds two deep lang frames zip tied together. It is called a double deep. To run a business, you have to count your own man hours as labor cost, unless you have a second income. Most people know that it takes the bees a lot of honey to build wax, if you can save your comb and let the bees re use it, you will save yourself and your bees a lot of time.

Great Video I am seriously going to be doing a Layens Hive next year. Can I just see as an experienced bee keeper of many years. When you leave the discarded wax and filters for the bees to clean make sure it is at least 100ft away from your hives or if other bees from other hives are in the area and pick up on that scent they will arrive in their hundreds and if its near your hives they might arive in their tens of thousands and start robbing. Seen it so many times with other beekeepers over the years.

Started this spring with a Layens hive I built and have had several combs fall off the frame. Was trying to do just a starter strip and no wood crosspiece or wires but seems the comb gets too heavy sometimes. Adding wires as shown in Leo Sharashkin's plans to help with that problem. Building a 2nd hive soon and may try the eco floor you mentioned. But like your hive and your attitude toward the bees. First class beekeeping there.

If my starter strips are not tight sometimes I get the same problem with the comb slipping off. I usually catch it pretty quickly. I will say that I do not use wire, but the wood cross piece is very helpful. I get bamboo skewers from Amazon. I think I got 120 pcs 36" long for $17, so I can actually make 240 Layens frame cross pieces with them.

@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 4 жыл бұрын
When it gets hot here in Georgia that is a real concern so using some fishing line or frame wire helps along with a bamboo frame brace mid way down the frame as shown in some of the pics, plus the bees seem to have a pretty good sense of the strength of the comb and will reinforce pretty good along the sides of the frame. So it has never been a huge problem, more of an occasional event.

This is the first time i heard about Layens hives. I like the long hive, but it won't work here where I live. I would need a long hive over 8' long to have enough room. The commercial guys here have yards with almost 30 colonies with 2 brood boxes and 7 honey supers that they harvest three times between May and September. I like the Layens, so I might create a Layens that would work under high production situations. Great video.

Gene. We have been tending bees for the last 5-6 years utilizing the standard Langstroth hives. Like a lot of Beekeepers we lose bees that did not overwinter. I am starting to build the Layens hive (20 frame) for this coming season to see how the bees do and how we manage it. Question for you.....How do you utilize your honey extractor with these larger/longer frames? We have a Maxant 3-6-9 extractor that I think will work but the cell configuration would not be optimal based on how the frames will need to sit.

Thank you for sharing your bee keeping experience with the Layens long hive, sharing your knowledge on how this benefits the colony and helps produce healthy bee's and of course delicious honey is so valuable to new and experienced bee keeper's alike. So many times you here of colonies not making it through the winter, I truly believe it's the way vertical hives do not have the protection of insulation like the way a hive like the long Layens provides. I'm a UK bee keeper in a moderate climate and I'm converting to long hives, not something that has traditionally been used in the Uk but wide spread across europe. Keep sharing your knowledge and experience, i will encourage my fellow bee keepers to watch and learn. Thank you again. Brilliant.

You're very welcome. I too am breaking tradition in my country BUT no simply for the sake a being different, but because these hives work with the bees natural desire to maintain themselves as they do in the wild, but it just so happens it allows us beekeepers to get the benefits of having bees on our property pollinating, and harvesting a sustainable amount of honey from them without hurting the bees. I'll keep posting :)

Yes thanks for asking - here is the link to the video I took screen shots of. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7CXbMdjuczbpWg.html The hives are about 2/3 the way into the video and as soon as I saw them I immediately noticed they were likely the Lazutin style hives. I buy unassembled Langstroth frames and then customize them to fit into a Layens hive by adding extensions to the arms. It's not the most efficient method but my goal is to make this process much easier and faster than my current method so I can get back to doing the more fun stuff. I'll probably create a video that demonstrates that next and I'll explain the reasons for my modifications too. Building frames for me is the least enjoyable part of beekeeping - still better than a lot of other things though I suppose LOL! Take care

Hi, I have 4 layens that I built. One of them has severe cross comb. Any idea why that happens? Also, the second hive you showed didn't have the same type of frame as the first. For the hove that you put in straw etc, how much distance between floor and frame bottom? We purchased a crusher for the comb. Worked great from Walmart 175. Thanks
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 4 жыл бұрын
Keeping your hive level side to side seems to really help with cross combing, but sometimes the bees just do it anyway. I'm really OCD about leveling my hives and giving my bees starter strips. Some of my frames are modified Langstroth frames trimmed down to become Layens frames with 3/8" bee space in between the top bars. On my extra deep hives I leave about 3" - 4" of extra space beneath the frames. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue this or not, so I'm waiting to see how they winter over in that configuration.

Hey I found your video as I'm trying to convince my parents to set a beehive in their gardern, but as they're getting up there in age I was considering easy to use hives. They seem excited to try but they wonder how to get the honey, the way you did seems straightforward enough. However my mother was wondering about recovering wax etc. Will the wax be recoverable afterwards or should it be considered lost? In the sense that the bees collect it back / unusable due to the straining?
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 4 жыл бұрын
Since I do crush and strain like a lot of other small backyard beekeepers, the wax is no good for the bees afterwards. It can come in handy for other projects or give to someone that is crafty. I actually use it to fill in wood cracks on my deck.

@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 2 жыл бұрын
I think so because with this style of hive, you work from the "quiet" side of the hive and work your way to the brood nest. Once you see what you need to see on your inspections, you just push the frames back together and you may only have to inspect just a few frames as opposed to removing the entire roof on a Langstroth hive and getting the attention of the entire colony all at once. Bee safe!

What do you do with the old bees wax? I'm trying to go foundationless but many say that it takes bees too much energy to build wax all the time and you get much less honey. What are your thoughts?
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 4 жыл бұрын
Right now I'm saving my old wax even though I have no idea what to do with it at the moment. I'll probably give it to someone that wants to have clean treatment / chemical free wax for some projects. I realize that the bees will have to rebuild their honey comb - and I always feel a little guilty every time I take honey from them BUT, since the honey I harvest is only from their surplus and I take very little relatively speaking, I think the impact is something that's manageable for the bees to easily recover from. My future goal is to cut the wax cappings and using an extractor if my operation grows enough that I can afford one so that I can return the empty honey combs to my hard working buddies. I always consider the bees first and everything else comes 2nd. So I totally agree that it would ultimately be in their best interest to return them their honey comb if at all possible.
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 4 жыл бұрын
Ultimately an extractor would be great so that you can return the empty comb to the bees to simply refill. But if you are NOT over harvesting from them, it's not a problem to take a little from their surplus - they'll build more wax in the next honey flow. Just be kind and leave enough for the bees and it should be fine. Keep in mind they also store honey on their brood nest too and that's what they winter on.

It looks like a design cross between a langstroth and layens frame. Do you recommend those or the Dr. Leo plan where the bees can't get above the top bar. I came up with a similar long-frame design. I have a (8-frame) 2-brood box deep Langstroth hive, which means I must remove the heavy top brood box to inspect the bottom box. What I notice is that the brood is towards the hive center in all three dimensions. To get a more natural hive and ease inspection effort, I would like to use an 18 inch deep frame for each two frames directly in line with each other. To assure thermal insulation and dimensional symmetry , the ideal hive (using 18 inch deep Langstroth type frames) would have at least 11 frames wide. My problem is that I can not find anyone who will make me the sixteen 18-inch vertical pieces, for me to use making the 8 frames that would need. A simple low cost and simple design using all standard (of the shelf) components, except for the vertical frame pieces, would be use two stacked 10-frame width Langthroth brook boxes with ten 18-inch frames.

I am going to retire in a few months and want to get one hive. Not so much for the honey as to have bees to pollinate plants around my property. Also I think they are important to protect. What time of day were they so mellow? Also, If you do not harvest the honey will that cause problems?
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 3 жыл бұрын
A good window of opportunity to inspect a hive is between 11am - 2pm, give or take a little . You'll have about 20% of the bees away from the hive foraging then. NOT harvesting honey in the wild never really creates any problems, so don't sweat it if you don't either. A Langstroth hive can become honey bound, but not so much on the Layens. I personally keep bees for the fun and education - honey is way way down the list of reasons why I do it.

I have a question for you that I may have asked before. Do you find that honeybees prefer longer frames to work on? Like those in your Layens hive? I have langstroth hives and I had an idea of glueing one of my deep and shallow boxes together and doing the same for the frames to create a longer frame. What do you think of this idea?
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 3 жыл бұрын
I've done this on 2 of my hives. I created an extra deep Langstroth frame for them in a horizontal hive. I find the bees work the Layens frames much better though. So I'm not making any more of the deep Langs.

I don't get stung that often really. The European honey bee is pretty gentle by nature and I just work mine during the late morning early afternoon when most of the forage bees are out. If I do get stung, I just scrape the stinger off and keep working.

Nothing wrong with Crash & Strain - especially considering you need to rotate out older combs anyway. I normally selectively C&S old brood frames or drone-only frames or just any sub-standard frames. I would not C&S perfect frames and rather keep in them in rotation longer. OR - simply insert Lang frames and harvest them conventionally. I am brand new to beekeeping and I am just needing to understand something. Everybody is saying horizontal hives resemble natural habitat for bees, same as hollow trees. Ok, I don’t know any trees that grow horizontally. So can somebody please explain this part to me, because I’m definitely confused with this horizontal this. Thank You!
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 3 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question! The key to this configuration although it's horizontal, is the narrow DEEP frames. They are deep enough to respect the natural vertical movement of the cluster and Layens frames are also the right depth to allow the bees to store enough honey on their brood frames to survive winter. The surplus honey is then stored on frames with nothing else but honey on them. It's then easy to harvest the surplus without taking the critical stores needed to winter on. Send me an email for a special price on Keeping Bees with a Smile - one of the best beekeeping books out there, and this is explained even further. enjoybeekeeping@gmail.com

Why not just place a large clear tote over the honey. It will keep the bees out and even act as a greenhouse and heat up the honey to speed up the process. Not to mention its reusable, no mess to clean up, easier to work with and on your pocket.

That’s a lot of honey from two frames! Is that how much you get for the year out of that one hive?
@enjoybeekeeping5612
@enjoybeekeeping5612 3 жыл бұрын
If my math is right I averaged 7 lbs of honey per hive - which is nothing to write home about, BUT considering all the horizontals are 1st year swarms, and the others are only 5 frame nucs that built up, plus I never spent a dime on sugar to feed, and I also have the knowledge that my honey is as pure as it can I'm happy to harvest and still have reserves left for the bees to winter on. So I agree this is a positive result. I keep hoping for a bigger average say around 20-30 lbs of honey without any feeding for the next go around. Take care!

@stephb5098 3 жыл бұрын
I could propose you some detachable Layens frame, in ABS plastic with startup foundation. These frames are 2 pieces clipped together, for use in regular size honey extractor. They split in the middle height, they do not need metal wire, and no wax foundation. HOWEVER, since plastic, you do need to rub bee wax on the plastic foundation starter to attract the bees for them to begin building up following the foundation. Very easy, and can be done with your own piece of beewax.

Kyrgyzstan. These are classic long Dadant hives - NOT Lazutin. Btw, the Lazutin is quite new design (re-design, to be exact). The long Dadants, to compare, have been around just about forever - very popular in Eastern Euro countries Mr. Manum is holding a Gallup frame, I am pretty darn sure - 11 1/4" by 11 1/4" - which brings up a long Gallup hive. Yes, pulling these frames just felt "right". It's hard to explain, but you'll see if you get one of these babies up and running. My bees are usually pretty easy going and never go after my camera gear, but they have gone after ME on my riding mower when I get within 6 inches of the hives. Most of the time they'll let me cut the grass, but there was one time where they gave me a thrashing LOL.

You are correct. These are modified Langstroth to Layens so they still have the 3/8" gap in between the frames. I have to also allow a 3/8" gap above the frames and use cover boards to close up the hive. I'm not trying to cause confusion, but I'm working out a hive beetle control issue and I'm experimenting with the 2 frame styles at the moment. Stay tuned
