So Daniel, after reading what Nancy said; do you now feel any sense of responsibility for profiting from perpetuating the romanticizing of the rock n roll death/drug myth?
@BCMoney1995
@BCMoney1995 2 жыл бұрын
@@billepperson2662 Ehhhh man I don’t think that’s fair. Daniel has covered stuff from all over the grunge/Seattle Music Spectrum. A lot more is going on in this video than Romanticizing Rock N Roll Drug culture. It would be different if his whole channel was centered around that and nothing else, but it’s not, he a lot more than just what you mentioned. Side note-One if the most common comments on any Layne/AIC Video is “Layne was more than his Addiction, and you are wrong for talking about it!” Okay yeah Layne was obviously more than his addiction, otherwise we wouldn’t be here. There are millions of people that are Addicts, and sadly that is all they are,or were. None of them have KZfaq videos made about them, nobody that is a junkie, and a junkie only, has videos made about them! 😆 I hope you get what I’m saying, this is going way longer than intended. To conclude-And I hate to say such, But You can’t talk about Layne without bringing up addiction/drugs, The ugly truth is that Drugs were a huge part of him and his life/legacy. He said himself that he wanted to be remembered for his art, Not his addictions, well that’s not possible , He chose to spend the last decade of his life using an ungodly amount of the two hardest drugs on Earth. He didn’t want to, try to, or care one bit about getting clean, he bought a condo, and indulged in more crack and herion than anybody ever has. You can’t do that and expect to not be remembered as such. If Layne didn’t want to be remembered as a hardcore drug user, than he could have cleaned up and made art, and the drug days would be far overshadowed.

It was hard, but necessary. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I don't need a fix to get out of bed in the morning anymore. 12-17-2022 will make 7 years I been off the junk.. Still to this day, getting clean is the absolute best thing that I've ever done for myself.. 💯💪 Shout-out to all y'all cleaning your lives up. Being a former addict myself. I found out about the Layne Staley fondation and there was a place where you could send them an e-mail.. They had posted stories from people/fans on the site but it hadn't been updated in years. I sent an e-mail over talking about my story and what Layne's music had done for my own recovery. Believe it or not, I got a reply from Layne's mother a few weeks later. This was in the very start of the recovery process and I've been clean this whole time around (2 years 6 months). It meant so much to me to get a letter from her. Really helped me keep going down the recovery route.

I am a heroin addict. I just got out of jail, where I broke the four days I was there. When I got home, I used. All of this after going to federal prison in 2011 for five years for heroin. Got out, stayed clean for another three years while on paper. The fourth and final year of my supervised release, I relapsed. Was arrested asleep at a stop light. Violated the terms of my release and picked up a state charge as well. Went back to federal custody sentenced to four months for my violation. Got out, relapsed right away. Went on the run from my state case. Got caught last Saturday night. Went to county jail, my angel, my lady( who is not an addict) posted my 20,000 bond. Got out… used. Now I’m facing going to state prison if I don’t shape up. I do not want to continue hurting my loved ones and myself. I am in fight mode. All of the positive energy and prayers I can get is greatly appreciated. Going back to prison will not help. I am finally in a place where I don’t find drugs at all romantic. H is terrifying. Love to all of you out there in the fight.

Mike Starr was there on april 4th the day before Layne died. He said that Layne told him he was sick and swore that Demri was there with him the night before. Its common for people in hospice for end of life care to claim that dead family members and / or loved ones visit them while on their deathbed. That always stood out to me. I think Layne was going to pass very soon, regardless of the speedball that they said was his cause of death. Being 6 feet tall and 84lbs wasn't the result of the shot that kiled him. His body was dying from the years of hard drug use and neglect. Thinking of his mother going in to sit and talk to his dead body breaks me emotionally. My heart breaks for her being in that situation. It is unimaginably sad. RIP Layne

Layne is one of the greatest rock singers I’ve ever heard. I named my son after him. Nobody knows the pain or what happened to him growing up that turned him into drugs. The poor guy knew it was over towards the end of his life and there was no way out. Some can get out of the cycle, others can’t. Again, nobody knows what he went through as a child. Some things are so traumatic that it’s undo able. Nobody knows besides him. RIP.

EVERYONE has been through a trauma! Absolutely everyone! There is NOT one soul that is living a blissful life, with no skeletons nor torments. That said, NOT everyone struggles with substance abuse. To say it was fated that he become addicted to drugs, as though he was a total victim, and not an equal participant in his situation is not honest nor wise. We NEED to accept personal responsibility(not blame) for our situations so we can be empowered enough to overcome all the trials and tribulations that happen to EVERYONE! I dont mean to sound callous, but Layne is dead and gone now! But there are people alive now and struggling that dont need to put on pedestals those who were consumed by addiction! Lets have MORE compassion for the living who struggle, than the dead who's struggle is over!

@@inconnu4961 Bravo!👍 I agree 100%. We have to be honest (as hard as it is)...Layne was a drug addict and he decided not to fight his addiction, he let himself slowly die probably in the worst way possible. If you are not ready or don't want to help yourself first nobody in the whole universe can help you. Many persons are going through various personal tragedies but they fight. If you don't fight you can't win in life. John Frusciante comes to my mind (talking about musicians). He was in a similar situation as Layne...but John decided to live, to fight and he made it. Layne let himself go, sadly...many say nobody (family, band members etc.) helped him. That's not fair. Layne (and ONLY him) made the final decision.

In my opinion his addiction got worse after Demri got health issues, indeed the last 2,5 years of her life were spent in hospital and Layne started to look so deep in his addiction from '93. Demri's friends say Layne felt guilty, I don't why but he gave up because of it, I think he wanted to die.

Layne was a wonderful singer and musician, but learning about him and hearing about his life from his Mom's perspective was very powerful and heartbreaking. So many parents and families turn their backs on their sons and daughters at even the thought that they may want to be a musician, and that is before the reality of drugs have any part of their life. Even though Layne was unable to get clean and live a long life, his Mom is a wonderful example of loving your children, even when some very hateful demons are a part of them. To Layne's Mom, Thank you for sharing your talented son with the world, even while seeing what it was costing him. And may your example help others in similar situations, so that more lives aren't lost too soon. 🖤🎶🤘

Mark Lanegan in his 2020 memoir "Sing Backwards and Weep* says that the day Layne got out of the Hazelden rehab center he went straight to his house and asked him for heroin. Mark had said to Layne "Why would you want to start all over again? You are really clean this time ". Layne then said "Man, all I thought about was getting high while I was in there. I only went to shut everyone up". This isn't word for word what they said but it's close enough. I know the feeling that Layne had at that time. The cravings can be so overwhelming it can drive you insane. I just hope wherever Layne is now, he's getting the peace of mind he deserved while being alive. RIP Layne Staley ♥️

I need to hear more of that because I think it could save my life. I used to think I was close to Layne's story because I came from the grunge era and AIC is my favorite band and I too am a heroin user but lately I realize that it's nothing more than the fact that I can see my future in the story. @@projectw.a.a.p.f.t.a.d7762 I'm not sure how I would discribe the current status of my addiction. I've been on methadone for about 8 years I finally stopped using hard drugs about 4 years ago now. Now I've gotten out of control because I relapsed on methadone. I take my dose plus quite a bit more that i get on the street. With the addiction it's not quite a 3 barbed hook but with how hopeless life feels I can't imagine going without the self medication. I'm not getting endocarditis any more or injecting in my femoral and I escaped hep C but the amount of methadone along with how sedentary I am has really got me feeling unwell and unhealthy. Lately I tend to day dream of how heroine is a better distraction for how miserable I am so I may as well go back to that since it all feels the same and as miserable. I've really made huge steps to get off of the streets and get where I was before taking extra methadone I'm just very stuck in a tough backside. This shows how little you actually know about Layne’s life. And that’s okay. But the truth is, his long time girlfriend Demri Perrot was the one that introduced Layne to Smack. Before that, Layne used Coke recreationally, and loved to drink, but otherwise, was a normal dude. She’s the very REASON he started slipping away. And Layne had a very addictive personality, which is why it took such a stronghold over him. His dad was a natural addict and was on Heroin himself for many years. He never had anything to do with Layne, and once Layne made it in music, he showed up. And instead of Layne telling him to go fuck himself, he took him in because they were both in the same drug. And it just got progressively worse. Losing Demri and his dad causing more disappointment may have set him over the edge and quit trying to rehab, but it all began when he met Demri who enticed him to try that forbidden fruit.

“Layne was sacrificed.” That is a profound statement, and one that I think is very accurate. His mom had it right. Dead rock stars make lots of money. Living rock stars don’t make as much money. If you can take that Journey mentally, the music industry capitalizes on death. Never mistake the art for the industry. If you’re desire is to be a professional musician, you don’t have to sign a record deal. You don’t have to be famous. After all, you might regret it. If your desire is to be famous, I would urge you to find other ways to fill that void. It’s not as great as you think it is.

I’m one of those guys that doesn’t care if my music is heard by the masses. I studied music history in college. At one point I wanted the record deal like many of these guys do. The. I realized something. Unless you’re a classical or Jazz composer no one will listen to your music 200 years from now. And if they are listening to your music 200 years from now they won’t listen to it while you’re alive. With Rock Stars no one immortalizes them until someone in the band dies. Dead people aren’t around to enjoy the fruits of fame.

I'm so sorry for the loss. My husband and I struggled off and on since 16. We met at 17 and he was 19. He was put on parole and began to drink to so he could get away with it. He got Serosis and was put on hospice. I nursed him back to health. It took me one year. He was taken off hospice and ALL THE meds with it. He released and I didn't ble him eventually relapsing myself. We checked into detox 4yrs later and he checked into a rehab surprisingly after his only other in samoa where they abused the boys horribly. Paradise cove I think led to majority of his demons. He died of an aneurysm. Well, his body shut down one organ after another. Our best frien stood by me and would sit with me at night till I fell asleep eventually moving to get away from the drugs. He came back for 3 days and used I was on methadone and was trying. He overdosed the last night I had to pound on his chest and give mouth to mouth. He came back with me hysterically crying u can't leave me I have only u. We held eachother all night for the first time his mom came to bring him back home I said b careful call me as soon as ur home. The call came. It was his mom she found him slumps over his bed needle still in arm.may 14 2009. I haven't dated since. The only 2 people I loved. I'm so sorry to Layne stayle mom. When I heard my husband was in jail and I had a pain in my gut. Someone we felt we related to all these years and he was gone. Did a lot of coke, Molly, and adderall in college and post college… but never tried H. Never tried meth. Never tried crack. Booze and weed have been the ones to stick around through my late 20s into my early 30s. Spent 17 years of my life as a very heavy marijuana user and a borderline alcoholic, mixed in with everything I listed above… And I finally took the plunge to get completely sober. About 4 months in and it feels great. Finally feeling feelings again. One day at a time though. Doing it for daughter, for my family, and for myself.

I think I have a Bittersweet feeling of listening to Laynes mom describe what it was like and I just can't even fathom that I'm so sorry for her loss for all of Layne friends and family I feel bad for them because I don't even claim is just I know him because of who he was either I did not know him and it still hurts me to know how bad he suffered but I know how I personally feel the friends that I lost that overdosed one in particular Marty Knarr he was a good-looking young kid 27 I believe he passed but he reminds me of Layne he was only a loss to those of us that knew him I loved him he wasn't famous he was a special to those of us that knew him so I imagine those the knew Layne it was the same. I really feel like telling my friends have spoken to me from the grave I thought about relapsing and then all the sudden I started watching these things about Layne Staley. I knew who he was I remember when he overdosed but I never have gotten so close to the story is I have here recently, and I'll talk to my friends about the relapse dreams everyone of the dreams are one of my friends that I used with that overdosed and died and I believe they're speaking to me from the grave trying to warn me they're showing me the ugliness of the disease that and watching what happened to Blaine is absolutely keeping me clean I'm sober but it doesn't make me feel good that those people had to suffer and die so I can be clean but for them. I will stay clean absolutely I will do it for them because they are not able to I will! 🙏🏻❤

I DON'T KNOW WHY, but something about Nancy has just always seemed...."off." It's always bugged me. Yes, she was his mother, I know she loved him, and went through hell watching him fade away, but I believe Layne's issues STARTED when she and Phil got divorced. Did they ever get in depth family counseling for that? Layne himself said that the divorce devastated him. And he apparently left school extremely early, at what? 15? 16 years old? My parents would have FLIPPED OUT had that notion even passed my lips! It just seems like Layne had a very "squishy" upbringing, and was _allowed_ to do the things he did, eventually leading him to allow himself to be as out of control as he was, always on shifting sand, with very little in the familial rock-hard family granite he needed in his life to anchor himself to. Kids not only need love, but _boundaries,_ and _discipline._ From what I've gathered, he was such a free spirit that he didn't have the mental or emotional capacity to say NO to the things that ruined him. Proverbs 22:6 says: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Seems to me that the ball was dropped very early in his life, and he just spun out of control from then on...

I think her all about religion and then living against the values she speaks about all the time was very damaging. She seems to blame all of his struggles on drugs and the music industry. I’ve read several books where she’s saying so many ignorant things about the music industry and how it was all their fault with what happened to him. Yes it contributed but he had a lot of problems before ever becoming a rock star. Nothing is worse than a mom who is judgmental, and has no accountability at all.

As an addict that's currently on Methadone (only been on 60 mgs for about 4 months and plan on weaning off soon. I'm ready to be completely clean and soon!) And someone who still struggles with other substances (rather not say here), I know exactly what it feels like to have such a tough time with stopping drug/alcohol use and to stay clean. It's an everyday (every MOMENT) battle in your head and on your mind and body and soul. It's like that good angel on the one shoulder whispering in your head "you are a beautiful person. Go get help and get clean!". Then there's the demon on the other shoulder which is the much more devious and powerful side. It constantly SCREAMS "OH C'MON YOU CAN ENJOY THIS BUZZ TODAY. YOU DESERVE IT. IT FEELS AWESOME AND YOU CAN ALWAYS GET CLEAN ANOTHER DAY. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO THAT FEELS SO DAMN GREAT!?". It can drive a person insane and is extremely exhausting. For anyone who has a loved one struggling with addiction just try and understand that it's absolute hell on that person and that they don't continue to use for "fun". It's because their brain chemistry is dependant on the feel good chemicals (dopamine/seratonin) and us addicts usually don't know HOW to stay clean (especially if ones been doing it since a young age and for many years). Be easy on them and offer kind advice and a listening ear and a ride to meetings/rehab/etc. I wish you all in active addiction/soberity and ones dealing with a loved one suffering with addiction the best of luck. MUCH Love ❤️❤️❤️

Get off the juice asap bro! I dropped off at 40mg and Xanax cold turkey and ended up in the hospital . Bad news I was sick for a year. Couldn’t really sleep more than a couple hours at a time for 6 months.… liquid handcuffs, I’m sure you’ve heard that term

Brother I was in those exact same shoes, peer pressure is a beast when you're an addict... Although I had to do it COLD TURKEY, because I accepted drug court on a Felony DUI (from nodding off, not drinking) but Being forced to do it CT was probably what helped me the most. The detox off an 8 year heroin addiction as well as being an addict of other shit for over 20 years was with out a doubt the worst experience of my life. I'm NEVER going through that shit ever again.. 12-17 gonna be 7 years clean.. regardless if your doing it with help or not, doesn't matter.. fuck whoever says your "NoT CleAn"🥴 as long as you not puncturing viens it's a great fucking day.. HANG IN THERE MAN, IT WILL GET EASIER AND MUCH BETTER.. You got that. Don't give up or give in when times get tough. You made it this far for a reason. 💪💯🤘

@@lannyordoyne7512 That's crazy you said that cause I almost completed a really long and detailed reply to my man northCALIFA about my awful experience having to cold turkey withdrawals in County Jail from years and years of using Subutex/Suboxone (Bupronorphine), Xanax/Ativan, alcohol (drinking heavily everyday for years), cocaine and Gabapentin (a neuropathy type medication that helps with pain and has mild dopesickness like withdrawals but mainly terrible ANXIETY). I literally almost died (this happened twice within 6 months) in there! I was having seizures in a cell they put me in by myself cause I was so bad off. I was sweating profusely, my entire body was aching like there was no tomorrow and my anxiety was through the roof! I buzzed for the CO and they FINALLY got me to a nurse before my neck snapped! It felt like my neck kept being pushed by an invisible force of some kind and it was really scary! It took over 30 days of pure misery before I finally felt better, I couldn't sleep, eat or barely hold a conversation. I just laid on my rock hard bunk in my dark and lonely cell. It was absolute hell on earth. My addiction was so bad I went straight back to my doctor to get my scripts for Subutex, Xanax and Gabapentin. I was also selling some to support my alcohol and cocaine habit and to have a few dollars. It was my income and my way of a free buzz. Such a hard habit/lifestyle to quit then. Now all I do is take my Methadone and I still do dumb stuff but am MUCH better off than I was (this was back in May of 2015 so exactly 7 years ago). I'm ready to wean off this crap and be totally clean though. Sorry for the essay of a reply but I just felt the need to share all that. Anyways, thanks for the kind words and best of luck to you and your future!

@@joshuayettou9032 man you definitely don't have to apologize for writing too much to me. It helps me in so many ways when I hear someone else's story.. especially when our stories have so much in common. Its crazy man, everything you listed in your symptoms is 100% my experience also. And like you, it was done in a nasty, cold, unforgiving jail. Part of my plea was 120 days in jail before I could actually start the program. Plus I was on trustee, SO I HAD TO WORK THROUGH THIS SHIT.. FOR FREE!!!! All bullshit aside, 2 fucking months I was sick as all hell. Like to the point where I had thoughts (not so much suicidal) but hoped a car ran off the road and took me out, while I was picking up trash on side that highway.. Or something in that nature, as long as it happened fast and painless..🤦🤣 I wouldn't wish that feeling on my worse enemy. Thought about just talking off in the woods and escaping so many times during detail it ain't even funny.. BUT, Im so fucking thankful it was as bad as it was.. It definitely gave me a good foundation to stand on once I got out and entered the program. I don't know much about Suboxone withdrawal, because I've never messed with it, but I can imagine it ain't worth a fuck either. Man just hang in there. One day you'll look back on the experience and be greatful you went through it.. It definitely makes you look at life different, just knowing all the "what-ifs" you dodged while you was running wild out there...lol

I think William is great, saw um live during black gives way to blue tour, awesome show, I just feel that some die hard fans expect the impossible, I can understand fans being very protective of Layne, but some expect William to be strung out on scag, and that's sad, that should not be the case!!... One thing I noticed that I thought was smart was in Black Gives way to blue album, up into Rainier Fog it sounded to me like Jerry eased William on in vocally alittle more each album, which I thought was a brilliant move, probably knowing how Layne's fan base could 🤔 think!! ✌️

“Our students never relapse” that’s a bold claim saying every person that has ever gone to your clinic has and will never relapse. Drug treatment places seemed like a joke in the 90s. No wonder all these addicted musicians weren’t surviving.

Layne told Mark Lanegan that he never wanted to get clean. He only went to rehab because he was being pressured to do so - he was trying to make other people happy. As soon as he got out or rehab he went to Mark's to use. You have to want to quit and stay clean.

I think if Layne started as a teenager to use drugs there must be something going on. We don't know how it was his childhood but I don't think it was perfect. Layne knew his bio father was an addict but he tried anyway, I think he was depressed but we 'll never know why.

I feel horrible for his mom, it is not the right order of life for a mother to bury a child. Although I understand completely why she wants to blame the industry, you can only do that so much because he had a lot of time at the end of his life where he wasn’t working for AIC or very rarely anyway; he had the time to get clean. He just was in too deep and didn’t want to get help or stay clean. Addiction is such a powerful force 💔 Tragic end for a beautiful soul, grateful for his music to live on forever.

Here is another thing about addiction...and I speak from experience....there is some people who just really love getting high...one of the reasons I got sober and stayed sober is I finally got away from the whole thing that addiction is an disease...it's not a freaking disease....it's a lifestyle choice....cancer is a disease...once you get past the physical addiction to the substance it's a lifestyle choice... period...you have to make changes in your life ...it's really not rocket science....

At 23:00. Sooo glad he said that. Right when he mentioned that fans complain Will is trying to sound like Layne I was like umm hello? No you hear 1/2 of Jerry & Layne which was the voice of AIC the combination of them. That's why it was able to work with Will & Jerry. 1/2 of AIC voice was still present. I myself haven't listened to anything passed Black Gives Way To Blue & I won't. But I do like that one.

When I hear his mother say: "He knew what he had to do"... No. Layne was sick and needed help. He was too dependent and unable to think for himself. I believe on the contrary that pressure and a lot of love could've saved him. Layne was abandoned and alone with himself. And don't tell me no one could help him. If someone wants to commit suicide, what do you do? You provide him with the weapon or help to get out of it? Drugs were the weapon that no one was able to take away from him. Layne let himself die for years and everybody around him knew it. I can't understand why he did this to himself and I never will. Fuckin shit

Well I know its been 2 years that you wrote this but I think I can help you understand a little better. I have dealt with 3 close relatives with addiction problems plus other issues. As bad as it hurts you cannot help people who do not want help. They will shut you out and there is nothing you can do about it. Because Layne was an adult his parents were not able to make him do anything. He was of legal age. In my experience they won't answer your phone calls or answer the door so what are you supposed to do? If you kick their door in they are only going to be angry because you invaded their space and now won't communicate with you at all. People have to take responsibility for their own behavior. I have seen others end up with addiction issues from the stress of dealing with addicts. All we can do is love them and let them know we are here for them. Its a sad situation.

Pressure never worked for me. It would only piss me off and agitate me to the point that I’d want to get high,again. But,everyone is different so,pressure might work for some. Just not for me,personally. There just comes a time when you reach a certain point and then,you start TRYING,really TRYING. And an addict must have the desire within themselves,a true desire and then,success may be achievable.
@ktw70

People are pushing back, but I agree. Also "pressure" doesn't have to be judgemental. It could have been family coming over to cook and clean for him. It could be clean needles or allowing him to use with supervision. And eventually, he would be motivated to get help. The fact that he was willing to let Mike Starr in shows that he was less isolated than people think - he just felt a lot of shame around his substance abuse and only let in people who really understood his experience.

Pressure doesn’t work, she’s right. As is stated in this video, the only thing that works when someone is completely overcome by addiction, is mandated removal from the situation. For many, that’s incarceration, and it’s probably the best argument for incarceration for severe addicts, as a few years in prison allows them to completely be pulled away from it all and undergo intensive treatment. I’ve worked with folks in recovery for 2 years now, and that’s a mantra I’ve heard repeated often.
