Here’s what I’m going to cover in this video:
• Introduction to new content approach for 2024.
• Highlights of January 2024 update, including:
• Winter break experiences.
• Recent acquisitions and visits to the Woodstock Model Railroad show.
• Track repair and introduction of the nibbler tool.
• Updates on the ballasting process and Fairmont Royal York Hotel backdrop building.
• Preview of plans for Union Station.
Longer Description:
Join me in this video as I embark on a new journey in 2024, making a minor shift in my KZfaq content. After three years of creating videos and receiving valuable feedback, I've decided to change my approach for SOME of my videos - I'm introducing a monthly layout update video with a more casual style in addition to my regular updates.
In this January 2024 update, I share my experiences over the winter break, including finding great deals on Go Transit items. The video covers my recent acquisitions, such as a GP 40th, a bi-level passenger car, and a Woodstock Model Railroad show visit.
I tackle a track repair. I also introduce a handy tool, the nibbler, for scratch building. The video concludes with updates on my ballasting process, completing the Fairmont Royal York Hotel backdrop building, and a preview of my plans for Union Station.
Join me each month for these casual updates, and let's continue this model railroading journey together! Thanks for watching, and I look forward to sharing more with you in the next update.
More Channel Info:
Welcome to N Scale Dystopia - A channel dedicated to documenting the build of a post-apocalyptic N Scale Model Railroad and Dioramas based on Union station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

If you found this video intriguing, consider subscribing for more content as I lean into creating more dystopian scale models. I'm figuring a lot of this out along the way, so it's always nice to have you join me on the journey and offer support, but more importantly, feedback! / @nscaledystopia

Really awesome video. The go transit locomotive and car are both really cool. The layout looks really good too.

I always enjoy your videos. The ones where your building something help me understand and see techniques. This format gives a more personal touch and lets me get a better sense of you, the creator/builder/model railroader along with an overview of the work taking place. Keep up the fantastic content.

Great update. I personally like both types of videos. I love seeing others build things from scratch as a 'how to' video, but also, it's nice to simply get a quick update of the progress of the layout. Makes the video editing quick and simple and doesn't require too much time which can be focused on the building or other things in life. Look forward to seeing the progress and updates. Craig.

Nice work! Good new cars purchase. They look so good. Maybe I'm a little crazy but I like so much your new machine aquisition moving in the rails without the cover. Is so... Terminator train machine! 😂 The new tool looks so useful for windows and doors. I like so much your video and how you transmit your hobby passion. Your decission to do more casual videos is good. It will work nice. Thanks to share! See ya!

lol, I knew you couldn’t upload raw footage. I agree with the rest of the comments, still well edited. I hear where you’re coming from. Editing takes a lot of time. I’m tempted to shoot raw layout updates as well but I did it once and the footage was 20 minutes. It’s one reason I do lives now, no editing. Anyway, layout looks awesome, you look awesome, can’t wait for the next “unedited” update.

Nice video! Production quality is still great! Just make sure you don’t burn yourself out, just enjoy the hobby as it is and don’t worry about the videos. It’s easy to get caught up in them. As for the rapido ocean cars getting canceled, the n scale community doesn’t like to preorder so there is a higher risk for the company to produce the cars. Thus, you should preorder all that you can lol.

Dear N-scale Dystopia, nice update video. Cool to see how you repaired the tracks. Love the way you added the ‘humped’ diode legs as an expansion joint. In a way it’s yet another layer of detail piece, where the tracks in true scale are connected in similar fashion. At least when the tracks are electrified. Must be honest I don’t know if those kinds of track connections are also used on tracks only in use by Diesel units. Must say I truly appreciate all the effort you put into your vids. Whether previous format or current. Humbly think you always got a great storyline, which indeed requires a lot of work and patience. Hence I fully understand the switch towards the update format. Cheerio

Production value is still high. The buckling tracks did not look like a fun discovery at all, but nice to see the fix being so straight forward. Disappointing that the pre-orders to the manufacturer for those cars didn't get strong enough for the production run to happen, but I gotta say I do like that there is this kind of feedback pre-order system nowadays so the manufacturers don't end up with too much unsold stock.
@NScaleDystopia

It's be said that N Scalers are poor pre-order-ers. We like to 'see' it first, so we tend to shy away from the 'money first' model. It hurts us in the end.

Hmm? Dunno about supergluing the track down. What would have happened when the board warped if it had been glued the first time (awful expression; hope you know what I mean?) What's going to happen next time it moves, eg., moves back again? Good to see someone NOT using DKK, and its constant voltage across the rails. I keep mentioning 'Throttle With a Future' (Model Railroader (I t hink July 1975) worth a look. If you build it probably not worth including the momentum circuit. With quality models, the results are superb. Should work with N, and some component update might be required. Viewed your latest on airbrushing. Nothing wrong with your airbrush. The more I do the simpler my equipment gets. That's not to say no place for high end gear, but for most of what I do, single action external mix works. And without borish cleaning. Practice, practice, practice - and good ventilation and safety gear/procedures. I started out with a fly-spray hand pump (modified with K&S tubing. I got laughed at, which worried me not at all. Went home and prepared two plates with masked two colour pattern. The paint was accuflex: the first was with a fly spray; the second with an outside mix airbrush. My detractor was impressed. I could j-u-s-t tell the difference, but not able to say if local factors or brush quality were operative. A lot of unhelpful silliness is presented over airbrush. Most of the difference between a good and bad result is how much practice the operator has had. Just spray safely. Modelling went on in the Depression too, you know. Be great to see you scratch-build a pass car or something.

Thanks for the extensive comment - I appreciate it! I'm not sure that the superglue was a good or bad idea but it was far easier than other adhesives. I'll look at the throttle suggestion - I am interested in the 'ancient' projects. I'm getting more comfortable with my airbrush - it's going well. Thanks again the comment.

Try using Kato expansion track sections, you could install them in non conspicuous places. Cause I am not sure you would want to ballast them. Cause these need to be able to flex with expansion and contraction. It would save you kinks. A friend had the same issues in his yard, he put these in and voilà no more kinks.

That buckling would feel great to your passengers! I'll have to start scouring alternative markets for GO equipment. I have been trying to get at least a loco+6 coaches for a year unsuccessfully (unless I want to pay $400 for three coaches shipped from the US) to run on my new layout.

Which years did go transit use those locomotives. I only remember the F59p that doesn’t have side rails, only yellow rails on the front. My 90s loco is identical to the F59p

@@NScaleDystopia I did a bit of homework and see GO even leased them out on weekends to CP to haul freight on weekends. I probably just never actually remembering seeing any in use on GO in my lifetime, as I see the last ones were retired in 1991.
