I like the little Top Gear references like 11:24 Jeremy's "Yeeeessssss" then the 4:42 "I've bought a reversing horse" (train for this situation) and of course 12:26 "speed is everything, speed is good"

The 844 has an estimated top speed of 130+ it is actually faster than mallard but the track speed limits and the laws won’t let the locomotive run free but hopefully someday they can get it to melt the rails going 130

The 844 was built for speed, on the flats it can pull 26 pacinger cars over 100mph. It can get from Cheyanne to Salt Lake City in just 10 hours. Also since coal became more expensive it now runs on recycled engine oil.

Charlie I run a miniature steam engine and we use diesel fuel not recycled engine oil. And with an engine that has a operating pressure of more than double of a live steamer I don't think they would use something that would provide less heat and wouldn't burn as well.

Coal is extremely expensive without a doubt. In fact, for Grand Canyon 4960, its fuel goes straight from the frying pan and into the fire, for it is powered by waste vegetable oil.

She's a high speed engine operating near 300psi of superheated steam. Back then they would run 100mph passenger trains across the plains. She is an oil burner, she used to be coal but converted to oil because of cost. Oil is more abundant in the west to midwest and not to mention coal cinders would start fires easily because of the dry environment of the area. Union Pacific just finished the FRA mandated rebuild last year. Now Union Pacific is working hard on getting 4014 rebuilt to running condition and it would be the first time a Big Boy ran since the 1950s

I can give you some facts on the 844 1, the 844 is the only steam engine in America that was never pulled from service, 2: the reason the 844 has no coal in the tender is cause UP turned it in to a oil burner, that's why there is no coal, and the reason we are using oil a lot more then coal is cause of 2 reasons, 1: we got a lot of oil down here, 2: coal got to expensive, and that is your history lesson on the 844

Not every steam locomotive runs one coal they can also run on wood. And. Recycled motor oil. Because many places out in California started converting them over to oil burners. After some coal fuleing stations were torn down before ww2. With the great depression people were struggling to make ends meet. But the true fact about oil burners go in for inspection quicker than coal or wood burners. Thats why many are on display als the fireboxes in oil burners over time develop cracks in the firebox.

Ok, I just have to point this out, but the proper horn/whistle code in the US dictates that you blow the whistle twice when you move forward, and three times when your reversing. The horn code for a crossing is 2 long blasts, a short blast and one long blast of the horn/whistle. Sorry, but since you whistled once just before you started to move I felt the need to point that out if you wanted to have that extra bit of realism in the future. Also, this class of locomotive was designed to have a combination of strength and speed. You kept saying it wasn't designed for speed but it was, just not to exceed 90 mph I believe with the type of consist that it has in this video, and on the plains. Union Pacific also runs it steam engines on Oil nowadays because it's far cheaper cheaper and cleaner than coal firing an engine. It just makes sense to convert large steam locomotives to oil because it's more economical to maintain. In future, quit slinging shit at american locomotives for not being fast. You put this engine on a line that has very steep inclines, so of course it's not going to hit high speeds.
@Oskar-js6iv

Most American Steam Trains that get restored and are gonna do excursions on mainlines and in other states gets converted to run on Oil! This is because coal burning trains are only allowed to run in certain states (i think) And It's more eviromental and it also saves alot of Coal!

Ok I am an American that runs steam locomotive. So I am going to help you out a little. You can't just pull out on your throttle all the way at the beginning. You have to work your way up. Use you cylinder cocks also to start. They are the steam coming out of the cylinders. It helps it cycle. He "reverser" you call it is called the "Johnson bar" over here start all the way forward and the notch it back slowly on flat ground. For grades make more fire if you can to keep up your steam. Also whistles over here are as follows 1short-stop 2short-forward 3short-reverse 1long- coming into station. And long long short long for crossings. Any other questions let me know.
@Smokebox
@Smokebox 7 жыл бұрын
He's running the "HUD-enabled" version here, which has a less realistic (but easier to use) throttle simulation. There's also an "Advanced" version which is truly advanced and has a very realistic simulation of the throttle, steam chest, individual valve events (admission and exhaust valves opening and closing) on each stroke of each piston, accurate back pressure, etc. That's the one that I think you'd find the most satisfying to operate.

The thing about American Locomotives and hills is that they were designed for it. If you wanted to get up the hill without losing too much speed you could have put the reverser to the max and it would have done at least 20-25 up the hill.
@Smokebox
@Smokebox 7 жыл бұрын
The problem with putting the reverser to the max is that as the speed increases, you rapidly use up the boiler pressure, which is the main reason you end up slowing down instead of going faster. Instead, you should reduce the reverser percentage as the speed increases, so that the boiler pressure stays close to 300psi. Do that even when going up hills. Basically, if the boiler pressure dial on the F4 HUD has turned red, it's time to reduce the reverser, but if it's green and getting close to 300psi, you can push the reverser forward again.

Well,the steam engines in the 50's DID run on coal,but as time went on,coal became more expensive,so the Americans had to resort to fuel,because if they kept on using coal, the great American railroads would have went bankrupt,including Union Pacific,even if they were a thousand-dollar company.

The 844 was built for speed. It can reach at least 75 mph. The 844 doesn't have a name except for 844

5:10 the reason thts like tht is to release the pressure from the pistons so the locomotive can get some speed n so tht there's less drag
