I know you published this video along time ago but I want to say thank you, on behalf of my hubby, for doing so. He just had surgery on his right hand and will have another surgery on his right shoulder very soon so we made this for his recliner and it works GREAT! So happy you uploaded this to KZfaq. Thanks for your ingenuity!

I had bought the PVC pipe already (knowing a long handle had to be rigged up). Your idea was both simple and ingenious so it saved me a lot of guess work. Kudos to your "left-sided" train of thought, Pat!

After watching this video this morning I ran to hardware store and made this. I used 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe. Wrapped my wood handle in a sports foam and tape. My husband had major surgery on his pectoral muscle on right side. He will be immobile for 3 months. I spray painted it brown (wood) color. Thank you!!

I was searching the internet also, coming across "how to switch the handle permanently" but also, as you said didn't find any instructions I felt comfortable enough to take apart my way to expensive la-z-boy. What i wanted was a way to operate it with my left hand, thinking i was going to have to create an elaborate system of pulleys and ropes. Thank you for what you did and posting your video. I was stressing about it, I'm having my second shoulder surgery this coming week. it was fine when it was on the left shoulder but now that it's going to be on the right...I was at a loss of options. Thank you again!

Thank you SO much for making this video! I just made this for my husband’s shoulder surgery coming up on Friday. Now he’ll be able to sleep (hopefully) but also will be able to be more independent post-surgery! This is a game-changer!

Thank you for putting this on the web. It has been a godsend for me. My wife did all the work because we saw this after I injured my shoulder. It took her about an hour to put it together! What an ingenious, smile devise! Thanks a million

Thanks! I spent over a month looking for a solution. I am having surgery on my right shoulder in about a month and you just saved me a bunch of time, money and stress. This is fantastic!

Great great idea!!! I'm having rotator cuff surgery on Thursday and trying to figure out how to find a left handed recliner or a power recliner. I know I should have thought of this earlier.... but now it's last minute. This helps tremendously!!! thank you!

❤️ wow this is an amazing idea! I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder and can totally totally empathize with what you're going to go through. I spent at least 4 to 6 weeks in my recliner to sleep every night and it was so so hard to manage it but I did it. It would've been so much easier if I saw and implemented this to my La-Z-Boy chair. What an amazing idea great job! Good luck with your surgery

I had rotator cuff surgery in November, and this was a lifesaver! My husband made this "modification", and it made it so easy to use my left hand to recline. Since the only place I was able to sleep for nearly the first 6 weeks after the surgery this was definitely a necessity. My physical therapist was also interested, so I'm sharing the link with her as well.

Thank you so much for recording this!!! I’m having shoulder surgery in a couple of weeks and will have to sleep in my recliner for a time. I was worried I’d need to buy a new one or do some kind of intensive switch. This I can do!

Thank you for this! My mom is having surgery and I have a recliner for her to use, but same problem...it's her right arm. I'm going to try this!!

I own a furniture repair business and I fix recliners all the time. You can just switch the handle to the left side. You'll have to turn the chair upside down and then run the short square tube and the handle part thru the other side. It may require drilling a few holes and maybe a few other adjustments. But it can be done and it will be a lot nicer looking than the pvc pipe.

This is meant as a temporary solution. Holes and cuts in the fabric will look worse than PVC for a few weeks.

Thanks a bunch for sharing! I am having the same surgery in 2 weeks and had been wondering how to deal with this issue. Just built my PVC contraption. Mine was much easier in that my arm cushion is much smaller and just needed one 99° elbow and no outward offset or screws for handle. I half-moon cut a dowel 1" long and taped it at the tip of the chairs handle and it firmly holds the PVC. It slips in and out when needed and rotates easily. Thanks again!!!

Quite innovative. And you got her there to help you. Think I would have just bought a motorized lazy boy recliner but of course it wouldn't be a rocker.

In case you aren't already sick of hearing it, thank you! Total shoulder replacement in April of 2018 to look forward to. And the only alternative to right hand controls was the power recline option.

Hello, have you tried this yet? I'm searching online for a left sided, full recliner for right shoulder surgery comig up. I was told my right shoulder will be immobilized for the first 6-8 weeks between my body and a pillow. Do you have to depend much on stomach muscles to hoist you up from the recliner? I had major spine repair surgery and still healing. HELP!

We needed that too. Easy solution.. Take the bolt out of the lever. move the lever closer to the floor in front. Tie a rope around the center of lever, secure with masking tape. Bring rope over the arm of the recliner. Wa! La! you can easily pull the rope with your left hand. The lever stays in place without the bolt..

You said it was 2 inch PVC. I tried 2 inch it was too large. i looked at the video closer and it shows that the pipe is actually a 1 inch pipe. Am I correct? It is a great idea and I will be using it in June. thanks

Looks like a great idea, however, it is 1-inch PVC, not 2 inch. I have both and 2 inch is way too big.

Yes, your correct. It's 1 inch.

i didn't have that problem. Maybe you could try a wrap of painter's tape to snug it up.

How do you keep the elbow from falling off?
@patmccracken8466 жыл бұрын
James Martin: Never had a problem with it falling off. PVC made a nice tight fit.
@solvarr26 жыл бұрын
I cut the top veritcal pipe about an inch below the elbow and put shaved down a broom handle so that it was trapped in the top by the 2 inch section and extended down onto the rest of the pipe. It turns freely now and no parts can pop off. My wife is sleeping better thanks to this video inspiring a better solution for my wife. Thank you!

But how do I keep the rotating 90 from coming off the end mine keeps popping off
@patmccracken8463 жыл бұрын
Well that would be pretty irritating to have it falling off. Friction and gravity was all I used. How about wrapping a piece of electrical tape to make it a bit tighter. Wish you luck.

Can you post the dimentions of the PVC pipe, length?
@patmccracken8462 жыл бұрын
No. I found the right PVC that fit my handle, the built out from there. I suspect actual dimensions would vary by chair.
