According to a recent YouGov poll, Labour are now 30 points ahead of the Tories and enjoying its widest lead since Liz Truss was Prime Minister.
The survey, conducted by The Times, suggests that if a general election were held now, the Tories would only retain 13 seats, while Labour would secure a massive majority of 452 seats.
It means support for the Conservatives is at an all time low since Rishi Sunak assumed office.
However, James O'Brien isn't convinced.
'There is no earthly way the Tories are only to get 13 seats,' he says.
'I'd bet my house on them not getting fewer than 100.'

It will NEVER get below 25% - Does not matter how bad they are, and this lot are historically bad. However there is a solid tranche of people who NEED to vote Tory as part of their self image as Middle Class
@timelwell7002
@timelwell7002 20 күн бұрын
Strangely enough, it is the phenomenon of *working class Tory voters* who are the most likely to put a sizeable minority of Tory MPs back in Parliament at the next election. This can be explained by the following: 1) When Thatcher gave working class people the right to buy their Council Houses at a knock-down price, thereafter they ALWAYS voted Tory. 2) The people who read the Mail, Sun and Express, and who believe the narrative which journalists employed by Viscount Rothermere and Rupert Murdoch promote on EVERY SINGLE political debate program and news program on EVERY SINGLE TV channel on EVERY SINGLE DAY of EVERY SINGLE WEEK in EVERY SINGLE MONTH of EVERY SINGLE YEAR - are almost overwhelmingly the working classes. Hence it is mainly blue-collar workers, non-graduates, who voted for Brexit. And given that it is predominantly the working classes who are more easily manipulated, it is they who vote Tory in substantial numbers. Until recently I lived in the constituency of Havant, which has never, ever had an MP of any OTHER party that the Conservatives. The demographic comprises a mixture of builders, factory workers, shop-keepers, etc. Very few people have been educated beyond GCSEs. Most took the opportunity to buy their Council Houses at a knock-down price, then later sold their houses and moved onto the next stage. In Havant constituency, 77% of the population voted Leave in 2016. The Tory MP won by and OVERWHELMING majority. Even now, I'd be AMAZED if he lost his seat. But there again, support for Reform UK is stong in Havant - hence 2 Reform candidates becoming councillors for Havant Borough Council. Racism, xenophobia and bigotry is rife in my old constituency, and the majority of people are unable to differentiate between the anecdotal and evidence-based fact. Whereas in nearby Chichester - a far more middle class and affluent area - support for the Lib Dems is much stronger, and Chichester District Council is now under Lib Dem control. It is notable that the constituency immediately to the West of Havant is Fareham and Waterlooville - the constituency of Suella Braverman. She is predicted to win comfortably, albeit with a somewhat reduced majority. The demographic is similar, except that there are many naval personnel living in Gosport, and people from the UK Armed Forces hardly ever vote Labour, but almost always for the Tories.

@timelwell7002 Sadly, the basis of your point is true the self image of the aspirant middle class will always ensure a 30% Tory vote, even after the historic shambles of the last 14 years, the ethics free piece of dross that is Bozo, the laughable incompetence of Truss, and like the MAGA cult they will always rationalise.

I wouldn't have said a vote for Labour in 2019 was a vote for madness. It was a vote for a national broadband service, repairing the NHS and an aversion of a harmful Brexit. We'd not have been such a key part of the response and probably been more on the appeasement side of things.

Don't underestimate the effect of the identity card. My wife doesn't drive so she hasn't got a photo identity, why should she? I've got a driving licence but nothing else. Remember the id requirement was introduced to counteract an imaginary problem, it's a vote suppression measure. Someone has calculated that it would advantage the Conservative vote.

And in a normal general election it might do so by a few per cent. But this time it will be like trying to stop a tsunami by building a sandcastle on the beach. Hopefully the new government will abolish this photo ID nonsense, and reduce the Westminster elections voting age to 16, as it is in Scotland for the Holyrood elections. That should keep the Tories out for a while.

My personal view is that the vast majority of the public want an general election. The Tories used to spout "its the will of the people" when it suited them, but not on this issue it seems - so that the longer the Tories fly in the face of what the public want, the more they will look like they are simply clinging on to power for their own benefit and the more public opinion will turn against them

We shouldn't want to wipe the Tories out. We don't know who or what might replace them. We should want Labour to have a sound majority which would allow them to begin to take sensible steps forward to make things better. Not should we want a divided society with an alienated and embittered minority.
