It’s come time to swap over my HPD oil catch can for the new 2020 Provent Oil Mist separator. In today’s video I remove my existing HPD Catch can and compare the two units side by side.
00:00 - Introduction
00:45 - Removing the HPD Catch Can
02:41 - Side by Side Comparison
09:46 - What’s new for 2020?
12:49 - Curtin University Study
15:42 - Installation Guide
21:12 - Conclusion
We see the clear design and function differences between both units, including that of construction material, physical sized and filtering methods.
I speak about why I decided the change the units over today and we briefly dive into an independent study conducted by Curtin University Western Australia that involves both units.
We then move onto a step by step install to assist those who are also thinking about fitting their own Provent 200 catch can.
Fitting an oil mist separator to our turbo diesel 4WD’s is a simple, but important addition to add for those wanting efficient intake temperatures and longevity for their engines.
I hope this video has provided some insight to those who are thinking about purchasing an oil catch can to their 4WD and provided some useful information in relation to how to fit the unit.
As mentioned, here is link to my intercooler clean video. This shows you just how much of a difference a clean intercooler can make to your engine and why it’s important to keep in that way.

Thanks Nathan, another great video. I put the Provent 200 kit from Western Filters on my 2015 Sahara last year and ordered a replacement (upgraded to IV) element yesterday. I’ve done nearly 20,000km with it on, including a few trips to the Goldfields. So far I am averaging to drain 30mL per 1000km using Penrite 0W20 C2 Euro. The current filter looks good at the 20k mark, but I may not wait the full 40k and replace it sooner. Note the older Western Filter bracket has caused the lid of the Provent 200 to rub on the underside of the bonnet at two points. Same with the fuel manager pre-filter bracket from them. Not badly, but noticeably...

Thanks mate, appreciate it. I reckon I might be replacing the filter around the 30k mark, depending on what it looks like obviously. As I do a fair bit of towing, I reckon the blow by gases will be increased with the vehicle being under a higher load. Interested to see how much this kit pulls out. Cheers.

Great vid Nathan. Like most things if it’s a quality product it will work if installed correctly. I have a proven 200 in my LC200 and after 3300ks dropped out about 10ml of oil. These things work. In time all that oil would have started coating the intake system and adding the EGR system to the equation would have eventually blocked the intake manifold and heads. Filter is expensive but so is removing the top end of your motor and getting it cleaned. 👍 👍
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. For sure, quality is vital! Unfortunately this vehicle is a 2014 and I purchased 2nd hand, so no doubt my intake has already mixed with the EGR to create some blockage, but this will assist in that process continuing. Hopefully one intake clean in the near future will help it out somewhat. Chees.

Order / buy from Western Filters the M & H Provent 200 and fuel manager pre diesel filter with 30 my filter units.3 . Buy air, oil and diesel filter from Toyota original. 4. go and full service the car all lubs, filters, and coolant as well install the catch can and pre filter correctly before driving the car. Ps the Provent 200 works a absolutely perfect for me. Cheers

I ended up with the direction plus kit for my 200, same oil separator (provent 200) similar bracket but the clamps were the constant pressure type, just a bit neater and the hoses ran around the front of the motor. Bottom drain tap was a bit neater also ( i"m just fussy! haha) there is another kit available also, my mate has and mounts in front of the radiator on the passenger side behind the grill. cheers

Good stuff. There are a few different kits out there on the market. I guess it's personal preference in relation to the mounting kit and position of the filter. One reason I forgot to mention in this video and one reason behind choosing the WF kit was that it kept the pipes and filter high and within the engine bay. Although I don't have any solid evidence, I have heard of other experiencing condensation in their filters when installed at the front of the bay, having fresh air pass over the outside of the unit. Cheers, Nathan.

Great video yet again. People need to know that once a catch can is fitted the Toyota Factory Warranty IS void. I asked them prior to fitting it to my VDJ79 and this is what they told me. In my opinion, catch can on, and take my chances with Toyota! They work great. I have the RYCO one and it works fantastically. I was stunned at how much crap was in mine on first filter change! Highly recommended to diesel owners. Not a great idea to pipe the oil back into the sump. I live in Victoria and the water moisture vapour mixes with the oil and you get chocolate milk in the body of the filter around the oil air interface. It is fitted correctly just in case anyone thinks there is an air leak. I think the water vapour ingresses via the pressure venting system you discussed.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely something to keep in mind and something I forgot to mention in this video (as it's not a consideration for me, due to being out of warranty). Further, cold climates and certain placements of catch cans within the engine bay have been known to build up a moisture within the collection bowl, definitely not something you want being returned to your oil sump for sure. Cheers, Nathan.

When you mention the kink at 5:13, note that one can insert a "hose support spring" that matches the ID of the hose. This will prevent the kinking while still allowing the hose to flex to a tighter radius. There are some made specifically for this, but a thin-gauge compression spring of the appropriate diameter will work as well.

Hi Unsealed 4x4 did fairly comprehensive test on most catch cans on the market Provent and Flash Lube performed the best by a fair percentage, both have pressure relief valves in case ofa blockage for safety. The chance of a seal being blown out or leaking would be very low if the unit was fitted correctly and the internal filter was replaced at recommend intervals. I fit a Flash Lube to my LC200 in the first 400k. Ian

For sure, and this study organised by Curtain and published by SAE International would agree. Will be interesting to see the RYCO RVSK105 vehicle specific kit for the VDJ200. The PX Ranger / BT50 kits are superb. Superior to any Mann Hummel PV kit I have seen to date. Not overly pleased with garden retic' elbows supplied with most PV kits including the one you fitted myself. The RYCO kits have proper formed hoses along with quality hardware kits. Interesting to hear. It would be great if someone who had one fitted or was thinking about fitting one could test one out and post the findings. Great video Nathan, i got mine fitted by my performance mechanic and my last service at Toyota they advised that my catch can was leaking. I inspected the hoses and thanks to your video i picked up that the installer has put the hoses on back to front on the can. My provent 200 is the newer model with the spring down the bottom. I have done about 30000kms with the hoses installed back to front on it since the provent was installed and it has been catching oil. but hoses have the dirty sot on the outside. Do you know what impact this would have had on the engine with the hoses put on back to front?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
That’s disappointing to hear that it was installed incorrectly. Good news though, it shouldn’t have done any damage to your engine. Saying this, the can would have been completely ineffective whilst running like this, so the hoses are probably coated in oil. At least you can be confident in knowing that it is working well now 👍

Several years ago I had a Pro vent 200 catch can fitted to my brand new Mazda BT50 XTR auto, by a 4X4 diesel specialist. Within 800klm my front seals blew, coming home from a trip to Cooktown. As I was driving, I could smell oil. Got home to Cairns, popped the bonnet and oil had sprayed everywhere. Car was still under warranty so took it into Mazda and was told that the front seals had blown because of pressure build-up caused by the catch can, so no warranty cover. I called Western Filters and they asked me certain details about my Pro Vent 200. It turns out that my catch can was a cheap Chinese replica of the Pro Vent 200 !. Looks identical BUT, mine had a fine stainless steel mesh filter medium instead of the genuine white material filter medium. Also they said the pressure relief valve on the replica's does not function at all. I then fronted the installer, who 'red-faced', removed the knock-off can and put the system back to factory spec's, and paid the bill that Mazda charged me to replace the front engine seals and clean the engine bay. What a bloody drama !. Not game now to get another catch-can.

I see what you mean, however I would maintain that the EGR does not require any oil, whether or not it benefits from it is another point. A tip you may not realize, what a good air/oil separator catches is a mix of app. 70% water and acids, sulfuric the most common. 23% is raw unburnt fuel...dilutes engine oil reducing viscosity, and 7% is actually oil, but the oil is saturated with abrasive particulate matter (soot, carbon, ash) and to return this concentration of damage and wear causing contaminants is a horrible thing to do. The filter cannot trap and remove these except particulate matter in the 19-14micron size. Most of what is contained is smaller than 8 microns so not an effective filtration process so this is reintroducing the combustion byproducts as a concentrate back into the crankcase is very detrimental over time. All PCV systems have a "clean/fresh" side where filtered fresh MAF metered air enters one bank or one portion of the crankcase, and the "foul/dirty" side that the foul contaminate laden vapors are evacuated (sucked out). Fresh incoming air flushes and makes up for the contaminate laden vapors. If left in the crankcase they quickly settle and mix with the engine oil. You have a great understanding of much of this, but this design in theory sounds great, it is detrimental to engine longevity. EMail me direct at: APDEG@aol.com and will share much more with you. So many misconceptions in relation to how to address oil ingestion, etc. Thanks!

Does anyone have an opinion on the Flash Lube Catch Can Pro which is effectively a Provent 100 made under licence. The documentation from Flash Lube states that the LC 200 flow rate is between 70-120L /min and the Catch Can Pro can handle in excess of 230L/ min. If that's the case is there any need to go for the larger provent 200. Plus the Catch can Pro being a smaller unit fits near the fuel filter therefore much shorter hoses are needed.

Great vid thank you. How is the 200 since it's been on for awhile, any side effects? Collecting oil ok? Why I ask about side effects is, what happens to the air flow once the filter begins to fill up, my way of thinking is that crankcase pressure would build up and cause issues because the engine can't release the pressure back into the intake. Please share your thoughts about this. Cheers Steve.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve, your comments are appreciate. So far, it's been working well. There has been no indication of any issues and it is still collecting oil at a very efficient rate. A couple of things regarding the air flow, firstly keep in mind the airflow from the crankcase is relatively low pressure. There is no extreme pressure or flow coming from the crankcase and therefore the air has plenty of time and availability to flow through the filter without issue. Further, the Provent 200 (largest unit) has a large filter and is designed to maintain flow and filtration even when fully soaked. If in the unlikely instance there was a build up of pressure, these units are fitted with a pressure control value that will by-pass the filter and allow gasses to flow without filtration. Although this would defy the point of fitting this unit, it is much better than risking engine damage. Cheers, Nathan.

@XploringOz

This is probably something best confirmed with your manufacturer. Although with all the safety features of the Provent 200, specifically the over pressure valve the unit is theoretically very safe for the vehicle, but whether the manufactures see it that way is another matter. I have found that manufactures are often quick to blame any aftermarket accessory that has been added to a vehicle to cover for known, or unknown manufacturing faults. Again, probably best to check with dealer. Thanks, Nathan.

I had a Provent on my Ford Ranger, the fibre filter clogged nearly straight away and created too much crankcase pressure which made my injector seals leak and a loss in power, (I’ve heard the same about other 4WD) would not recommend a Provent as I would rather have my engine last longer and I would get a more generic catch can to not build up the crankcase pressure.

The part that bothers me is the next sentence you DIDN'T highlight @15:35, and that is "All catch can-type separators and the cyclone imposed HIGH RESISTANCE to air flow in the system, coupled with low capture efficiency, which resulted in a poor quality factor for BOTH types of devices. This is the part that concerns me. I know the Provent 200 has a release spring/valve, but according to the above report the cannister will always be under high resistant positive pressure. Correct me if I am 100% wrong but surely that cannot be good for your motor or seals?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
I understand your concerns regarding the pressure build up, but I would recommend reading the full report as they do talk about the pressure values of these units. Although yes, there is a slight increase in the pressure from the CVS, it is far from 'high' pressure. Firstly the CVS only emits a small amount of vapour, it's not an intake or exhaust system, simply extracting vapour that has passed the piston rings. Secondly, if abiding by Mann&Hummell instructions and changing the filter every 30000km (or circumstantial) then your filter is unlikely to get blocked and cause issues. As you have mentioned any significant or dangerous increase in pressure within the unit will be relieved by the PCV rather than causing damage. Obviously there is the possibility of units failing and creating pressure build ups, where issues can arise, however the normal day to day operation trouble free will be relatively safe for your engine and seals. Cheers, Nathan.

Great study the only part that is not in the study is a time result so after say 5000km driven exactly the same on same vehicle what is the efficiency there is simply no possibility of a cloth filter retaining the initial efficiency in any manner. The metal filter would change but to a lesser degree. So unless you change the cloth or paper or what ever material is used frequently then I do not see the results being as accurate as claimed. Could be wrong but perhaps it should be tested.
@XploringOz

Maybe, however my understanding of this type of filter is it is not designed to 'catch' and hold the oil vapours within the filter media, however covert it from a gas to a liquid form to enable it to be captured in the collection bowl. Whether or not the media is soaked with oil or not, in my opinion, would have little bearing on whether it can continue this conversion process. I agree with you though, I can't state as fact as I haven't tested it and it's potentially another great test to have a look at in the future. Cheers, Nathan.

It boggles my mind that these catch cans are being installed at higher elevations than the PCV valve and intercooler. I get that it’s for the convenience, but to get the absolute best results, seems like you want all the hoses to drain AWAY and back towards the can vs the engine ports. The larger the diameter of hose and can itself, the slower the contaminated air can move thus increasing the time available for it to drop out its contaminants. Likewise, the more surface area the contaminated air passes across (whether filter media or hose length) the more separation occurs. Offset friction loss (pressure) of longer hoses with greater diameter hoses/fittings/ports. But as is, these typical installations of high quality cans are better for the engines long term efficiency than no can.

Hey mate, so I guess this would technically work. Saying this though, I believe the liquified oil is only a portion of what is entering the engine in the form of vapour. Although not specific tested, this is what I believe would occur. Cheers, Nathan.

Fair enough, appreciate the feedback.
