In todays episode we talk about catch can’s once again. Specifically the Provent 200 unit installed in my 200 series Landcruiser.
We are going to be measuring the amount of oil captured in 7000km of driving and compare that with my previous HPD unit, along with conducting a visual oil vapour test. Further, I discuss the theoretical benefits for installing a catch can, how the systems works along side a EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system and whether or not it’s really worth fitting one to your vehicle.

Nice video. I'm in the USA and have a catch can on my Trans Am but need one on my new V8 Saturn Sky (converted from the turbo 4). There are so many brands of cheap home-made stuff for performance cars but nearly all are essentially the same - some metal pot scrubbers and a mesh filter. Only a handful even seem to consider air swirl, actual oil precipitation, or have large enough volume. I've seen 500HP Corvettes have catch cans with 8mm hoses to and from the can, not nearly large enough to handle a lot of air. I found the ProVent and am researching it - seems great. Thanks for mentioning the Curtain University paper, I'm glad to see someone did some real research. And this video you do your own comparison with the cloth, that's great. I'm going to get a PV200 or maybe even a 300 series. Thanks again.

Nathan, Great video. With the new Provent 200 filter element, the vent valve is in the bottom of it as shown clearly in your video. This means that if the pressure is high and it opens the inlet fumes are vented directly to the outlet. Normally this is fine but if the outlet hose to the air intake is kinked or has collapsed, serious damage to the engine could occur. No doubt Mann and Hummel have done this change to meet emission requirements. I think there is merit in leaving the original vent valve in the top of the canister intact.

Nice video mate. It’s also worth noting that if there is a significant buildup of sludge where the EGR combines with with the CCV system, it’s worth checking that there’s no cracks or anything in the intake system that might cause the sensors to be reading an incorrect amount of air flowing into the engine and thus over-fuelling, causing more particles in the exhaust than is necessary.

Nathan, I did a oil change last weekend on my 2018 Holden Colorado, 5,100km since previous, and had about 80mL drain out of my Provent 200 can. So that's oil and other muck that didn't have to find it's way back through the intercooler, turbo, inlet manifold, and through the cylinder, and what doesn't get burnt up, into the DPF. Prior to fitting the catch can at about the frist 9,000km the DPF had come on three times. It's now got over 25,000km on the clock and the DPF has never come on again.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Good results. It's interesting to hear the changes in the DPF burns (something I can't comment on with my model). At least it provides that confidence and peace of mind that you are getting the cleanest air back into the intake. Cheers.

@Michael_Mears

@@chasp_0784 That was 25,000km less 9,000km, so 16,000km without a DPF burn. It gets even better(!). Since I posted that I'm on 36,000km, so now 24,000km and it still hasn't done one, or it hasn't told me it's done one. It use to come on and I'd have to drive about 30km at highway speeds for it to complete. Anyway, if it's not possible it's not possible. I change the oil and drain the catch can regularly, keep driving it, and never get any DPF messages, but maybe it's doing something in the background and not telling me.
@chasp_0784
@chasp_0784 2 жыл бұрын
@@Michael_Mears yeah fair bump mate, I think it’s doing it in the background but no dpf issues is a good thing, people think Toyota owners got screwed, I worked for Mercedes in England and every single day there was multiple diesel emission jobs going on, sensors, regens, replacing whole catalysts, injectors. Rubbish product.
@Michael_Mears
@Michael_Mears 2 жыл бұрын
@@chasp_0784 Hey, reading that, you've given me something to think about. I should get the local mechanic with this scan tools and see what the stats are with the DPF, or history, or whatever can be gleaned from the ECU records. It might give me an insight into what it's doing. Point taken about the work that goes on. If this Provent unit can help prevent or significantly delay some of that type of work, that would be fine by me. Cheers.

Cool video. You just forgot to mention that if you do an EGR block you’re actually going to speed up the blockage in your DPF. EGR is there for a reason dude! Apart from failing to research EGR and DPF systems properly you did a good job.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I forgot to mention this because I don't have a DPF. DPF vehicle's are certainly different and specific considerations need to be taken into account, but I highly doubt I will cause damage to a DPF if I don't have one...

Hey great video. One correction - EGR has nothing to do with saving fuel it is solely there to reduce NOx emissions. It lowers combustion temp which lowers NOx. No affect on fuel use.

I don’t own a forby but I do own a vw polo diesel as my daily. I learnt about Mann and Hummel provent sometime ago. I did some measurements and quickly discovered that the provent 200 simply was too large to fit under the bonnet of my little front wheel drive. BUT I discovered that the provent 100 would fit perfect in a particular spot! So bought it,installed it. And just for the hell of it I used 19mm clear petrol proof hose from Bunnings. This provent does work. In 20,000 kilometres I have drained it three times and got about 200 mls from each drain. A filter change at 20,000 and we’re good to go again. And as for the clear hose, well the intake hose going from the rocker cover to the catch can is definitely black and oily internally but the hose going from the catch can back to the air intake which is just before the turbo,is still quite clear! Which just goes to show that yes,these genuine ones do work.

Thank you for your time, i appreciate your work. My LC 200 came without EGR system, do I need to install catch can?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. Installing a catch can will definitely still have an effect on catching some of that oil, however it won't be as important. Without an EGR system, you won't develop the 'sludge' that builds up in the intake and therefore won't have a long term restriction. Saying this, the oil that can flow through the intake pipes without a catch can fitted can also effect the thermodynamics of the intercooler, creating a slight increase in intake temperatures. In conclusion, although it's not quite as important, there are still benefits there to fitting a catch can. Cheers, Nathan.

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video. To be honest, there's nothing inherently wrong with the original kit (other than the environmental concerns). From what I am aware of, you can just upgrade the kit when you next replace the filter material. These kits come with everything you need. Personally I wouldn't be changing the element out just for the upgrade until the regular service interval (normally around 30000kms)

while i think these are a good idea if it's made from the car markers for that specific engine, as they still allow the engine to breathe the right amount. The issue i have with them also is if they fail, values can get stuck or fail which will cause a lot of pressure to build up and that will cause leaking / blown seals. I know Toyota/Ford can be funny with these things if you have a factory warranty as it can give them an out to fix warranty issues. Another thing is if the motor is old and you're having a decent amount of blow by start at look what might be the cause, (injector rings, can be one major cause) or if you have a rebuilt/modified engine that can cause a lot of blow by as well. Catch cans are a band aid fix in most cases, and most people that are promoting these are the ones who have some vested interest in them.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, can definitely see where you are coming from here. Although I can agree to some extent, a unit like this does include fail safe and pressure relief valves that should (theoretically) prevent damage in the event of a pressure build up. Although manufacturers did design there vehicle in a particular way, engines need to breathe, however combustion engine were never designed to recycle that contaminated air back into the cylinder. This was only done for emission standards and a unit like this will help to purify that air prior to re-combustion. Hope this makes sense and by no means discounting the points you have raised. Cheers, Nathan.

Great informative video thanks for sharing. how many provents does the LC200 need? do both turbos have the vent connected to them? just asking cause my VW has 2 turbos and 2 separate PCV systems one to each turbo. then again its done 265000km so the horse has probably bolted.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, so the 200 series only has one ventilation hose from the crankcase. Making it easy to plumb into a single catch can. The filtered air is then re-circulated into the passenger side air intake, however once that hits the intercooler, the pressures from both turbo's are combined and the gasses mix prior to entering the intake system. I didn't realise the VW had 2 seperate pipes. I'm guessing that a model specific kit would likely combine the two hoses prior to entering into a single catch can... Cheers, Nathan.

Good work! Regarding the increased crankcase pressure myth - not sure it has been dispelled yet. Do you think it would it be possible to measure crankcase pressure firstly with the catch can and long hoses and secondly with no catch can and just the short factory hose? Second unanswered question for me, is whether the small amount of oil that still gets through is enough to still make black sludge, given that 99% of people who fit catch cans still have a working EGR. If so, will we find the intake is still dirty after say 250,000km despite all the oil removed by the catch can? Might take many years to know the answer to the latter.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, so yes it would be possible to measure those pressure. However saying this I don’t currently have access to this equipment. Personally I wouldn’t be too concerned as the pressure is low to begin with. Secondly, yes this is very true, however the build up would take much longer, given a more efficient intake for a longer period of time.

Thank you for your educational videos!! Just want to ask if the LC200 crankcase ventilation system you mentioned means it also uses a PCV valve (routed to exit through the upper breather box)? or is the system just a plain breather system? Emissions standards aren’t so strict in my country, so i’m thinking to just vent the catchcan from breather to atmosphere and to just block the intake hole. But doing so, if there’s a PCV, i’d be losing vacuum pressure at low RPMs, right? Also, venting out would require an ecu tweak? Thanks in advance!
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, glad you enjoy the videos. So as far as I'm aware, the standard Toyota ventilation hose does not have a PCV. If you wanted to vent straight to the atmosphere I don't seeing this being a engine management issue. Because of the low pressure, there wouldn't be any vacuum issues as long at the blanking cap was secured well. My concern would be environmental and road surface. As you would have seen there is a significant amount of oil being captured by this unit, if this was to be released it would 'film' the road with oil, making it a slippery surface for other vehicles, particularly motorbikes. Cheers, Nathan.

@XploringOz

Hey mate, so I don't believe there is a vacuum on the outlet side of the can, if there is it would be very small. The pressure and direction of the flow is based from the pressure placed from the crankcase toward the catch can. Hope this helps thanks, Nathan.

Hi Nathan. I'm a fresh subscriber to your videos. Loving your methodical and very informative approach on what your doing...just brilliant. I had a big binge tonight. I Come across your catch can vid here and I've paid close attention... I think. You say if the provent filter blocks or has a problem it will vent the crank case gases out through the relief valve that you show in the bottom of the filter, Which is inside tge can, and into the outside atmosphere under the bonnet. How can it possibly do this. Could you check this and maybe do a video. I believe you are wrong. The relief valve in the bottom of the filter just by passes the filter and there for it will just vent it straight into the catch can itself, then to the out let back to the inlet pipe feeding the turbo. Correct me if I'm wrong, but have a closer look at it please. Maybe even simulate a blockage. You'll see what I mean. While your at it check the other relief valve on the bottom side. It gives the catch can and motor as such the ability to suck in unfiltered air. I won't be installing a provent catch can antime soon.

Love your thorough segments, well done mate.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, glad to hear you enjoy the channel and have found this video useful. So there are a couple of things to consider. The EGR system is completely seperate and (generally) produces a dry gas which can contain small debris particles. This is no issue by itself and will just pass through the engine as designed. The EGR intake is generally after the intercooler and immediately before injection. However, when the EGR gasses (and small debris) come into contact with that sticky blow by oil this is when it becomes a little bit of an issue. The crankcase ventilation system (CVS) is generally positioned prior to the intercooler and hence why the intercooler can also gum up with oil residue. Anyway, when that oil residue from the CVS meets with the EGR gasses in the last part of the air intake system it creates a thick and sticky sludge over time that can eventually reduce the intake diameter and overall efficiency of the engine. Theoretically, placing in a catch can, this will prevent this build up, however we also know that even the Provent 200 system is not perfect, which means a small amount of oil residue will inevitably get through. This in turn will still mix with the EGR gasses and overtime time (a lot longer time) create that sludge build up. It was take significantly longer though. So yes, blocking the EGR will definitely provide some benefit in that regard, however also keep in mind the legality of this if that is something you consider... Now some people will also say that the engine will suffer somewhat from blocking the EGR, in particular with overheating. The engine is tuned to run with a functioning EGR valve and when in use will result in a cooler running engine, as the intake air is partially burnt gasses and won't be able to re-ignite. Saying this, almost all modern day vehicles will be able to handle this very small increase of heat with a standard alternating thermostat. I hope this can of help. Cheers, Nathan.

15 minute mark. The current version does not release into the engine bay. It releases it into the engine intake.

Stephen, mine has two valves. One to regulate crank case pressure in the side, as part of the outlet to air intake line, and one in the lid as a pressure relief valve, which vents to the engine bay. See these links below. Do you have a link to how the new ones work? I might have to get a new one... @@Michael_Mears no links, but the filter has the pressure valve in the base that opens and let the excess go into the intake. My understanding that this was due to emission requirements not allowing ventilation to the atmosphere, so if a person does not replace or empty the filter, it all goes back into the engine.

@@stephenbloomer567 No worries. I'll have to look into it and contact Western Filters about it.

Cheers mate, I'll look into that. The changes Wester Filters have made to their new 'IV' system would have to include increase emissions controls. Cheers, Nathan.

Catch cans are great if you don't mind spending thousands on having the valves adjusted far more frequently. On this engine type you'll be purchasing different sized buckets to offset the additional valve recession caused from all that oil not being there to lubricate. Ask yourself this basic question. 'Why doesn't Toyota and every other manufacture not install these aftermarket oil catch cans from new? It's because they spend a metric tonne of cash testing and developing an inbuilt baffle to control the amount of oil vapour flowing through the intake. So in short, there's already a system in place controlling these requirements to prolong the life of the upper cylinder and valves. Also, EGR doesn't inject dirt into your engine, it's soot and exhaust gas, nothing else. EGR reduces noxious exhaust emissions, increases fuel economy and lowers the combustion temperature. It does so by recirculation of inert gases from an already depleted oxygen supply, not as much oxygen to compress which reduces pumping loses and less heat is lost through the engines cooling system, less heat energy wasted equals better economy. Having oil coating your intercooler isn't going to change much at all considering it's great at transferring and absorbing heat energy. That's why oil coolers/heat exchangers work so effectively and they are full of it. I find 95% of the 4x4 community has no clue about what really happens, it's all regurgitated horse crap from people who are feeding on the hype such as ram air from a snorkel, catch cans, egr and dpf delete, chip/piggyback ecu tunning whilst all being told none of the above affects the warranty.

I completely understand where you are coming from, however have a different opinion on the matter. I understand the role of the EGR system and am aware that it doesn't inject dirt into the intake system. I further understand that oil residue from the crankcase recirculation system (CRS) doesn't hinder engine performance. However the mixture of these two system in the intakes creates a sludge and restriction on the intake pipes and most definitely do effect engine performance/efficiency over time. Further, yes EGR system do slightly benefit fuel consumption and will help the engine run cooler, however this is nothing the standard variable cooling system can't handle. After all, all engines ran fine before EGR's. EGR's and CRS's are only added to reduce emissions, not to benefit the engines performance or longevity.

Do yourself a favour and go pull off the intake manifold of a recent diesel with a catch can and one without. You tell me which one is the healthier engine you. It seems you are the one that doesn't know what you are talking about.

I am from Vancouver Canada. I currently I own some Ford Escort Cosworth cars. I am going to sell them and thinking of buying a Ford Focus a RS so this has been a very helpful video. One thing I didn’t know is that there is a design flaw with the standard Ford oil baffle which also causes carbon buildup on the intakes of the RS which has direct injection. It can be remedied by switching to the Mountune Oil Baffle. Here’s a short video where the guy explains why it’s causing problems. It’s called “mountain oil baffle instal kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMqHhtylx9q0hXk.html
