So I'm a former ET, and I had similar symptoms, and did a bit of these steps too, and had similar results, but didn't think to wedge pieces in. Not wanting to take the time (since I've got a toddler running around and my wife HATES when I start opening electronics up and she's stuck playing toddler ref), I took it to a pro.... Bad choice. They turned it on, decided the panel was bad and claimed I should buy a new one. I'm glad someone took the time to show this video and hope more folks see it. Now I've got some ammo to show my wife and hopefully she'll let me take another shot.

My TV sharp aquos 70 inches was showing a half black screen display and I found this channel and read through the comments below. I didn't want to take the tv off the wall and disassemble. I read one comment and it said to hit the tv top frame and the tv worked fine. Wow it fixed mine, too. I used a lint roller and tap tapped on top of the left side of the TV because the left side was black. So if you have the same problem try this! Hit the top of the TV. Good luck! 2022

@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 5 жыл бұрын
If it's just dark, but not blurry, then you may have a TV where the T-Con board is located at the bottom of the display panel assembly. That design suffers when glass cleaner sprayed onto the screen. It drips behind the bezel and corrodes the connectors. If that's what happened to your TV, cables can be cleaned with a soft, pink pencil eraser. Connectors can be cleaned with apple cider vinegar.

@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 4 жыл бұрын
Ribbon cable connectors (female parts) are hinged at the top. Lift gently and they open same as the hood of an automobile. Once pressure has been released, some cables (male parts) are perfectly rectangular and will slide right out. Others are notched left and right so you have to lift slightly to get them above the notches before you can slide them out. Use your thumbnails and be gentle!

The LCD TV shown in this video is an older florescent back lit model. Similar symptoms on a much newer LCD/LED back lit TV would more likely be caused by unlit LED strips inside the display panel assembly. Please watch "Insignia NS-55D550NA15 LED/LCD TV Repair" for details. Observe that the two display failures look nearly the same, but the causes are very different. Assuming yours is an LCD/LED TV, the next step would be to check the backlights. With most brands, there's no fire damage and you can fix the TV by identifying and replacing the burned out LED strips. If there are none, then you've got an internal failure in the LCD. Fixing that is another story, so please check the LEDs first. Good luck, and thanks for asking!

Just curious when the bottom part of the screen of an LG 60UJ6050-UA TV is very dim, not watchable, what steps would you take. A friend is willing to give me the set for free. TY for any advice.
@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 3 жыл бұрын
You almost certainly have a bank of LED strips (maybe 4) out at the bottom of the display. The LG 60UJ6050-UA is a modern LCD/LED Smart TV (a $500 item) so the symptoms shown here on an older LCD/Florescent TV would not apply to it. The main thing to understand is that you describe a display panel problem, NOT a board problem. To fix it, you have disassemble the display, identify the strips (or just the individual LEDs) that have failed, read the part numbers off of them, order replacements from ShopJimmy or AliExpress, wait for them to come in, then install and reassemble. Watch the following LG TV repair videos for details: LG 50UH5500 UHD Smart TV Repair Secrets LG 42LN5700 - 47LN5400 LED TV Screen Repair Secrets Assuming you have the space to disassemble and spread out, and the patience and disposition it takes to accomplish this, you'll end up with a very nice TV for the cost of peanuts! And, if you replace entire strips (easiest way) you'll have spare parts (failed strips with many good individual LEDs) for next time. Good luck. Thanks for asking!

@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 4 жыл бұрын
Similar symptoms on a much newer 85" (LCD/LED?) TV would more likely be caused by open backlight strips inside the display panel assembly. Please watch "Insignia NS-55D550NA15 LED/LCD TV Repair" for details. If after watching "Insignia NS-55D550NA15 LED/LCD TV Repair," you decide to take your 85" screen apart, you'll need a second person to help you with disassembly. And, you'd best fabricate a stretcher to support the fragile LCD before lifting it, otherwise, even with two people on the job, the screen may flex and crack on removal. Thank you for asking!

I have a Samsung TV and it doesn't have the thermal cable at the top (I believe it is an LED as well. . There are two that are located next to each other at the bottom in the middle. . I believe the darkness and the blurriness at the right was caused my a soccer ball that glanced off the television. I played with the cable as you did and nothing looked different.
@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 4 жыл бұрын
Most likely the backside of the LCD cracked at the point of impact and that's what's causing your problem. To verify, you'd have to remove the bezel and rotate the screen 90 degrees. At one time, manufactures placed a sheet of heavy Plexiglas beneath LCDs to prevent them from flexing inwards. Today, there's just a very thin diffuser beneath the LCD offering no flex protection whatsoever. What you have described is a very common problem with Samsung UN series TVs.

@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 4 жыл бұрын
Only the right side of the display is inverted, not the whole screen? I ask because inversion generally occurs when the TV is misdiagnosed and the main board is replaced. In some cases, it's necessary to toggle the inversion option in the service menu to reorient the display. Have you tried that? Regarding the dark and blurry problem, that's either the timing control board, the display panel assembly and/or the connections between them. As the Vizio M550NV uses LED back lights you might also have the problem shown here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psWckpV-3p2tgok.html.If visual inspection doesn't reveal any like that consider studying Kent Liew's screen panel repair eBook available from: www.lcdrepairguide.com. Good luck. Thanks for watching this video and thank you leaving a relevant comment.

@@LawrencePina Thanks for your reply. After doing a through visual inspection I discovered that I had somehow partially torn one of the ribbon cables that go from the led strip to the screen. When I press on the cable I get a very clear picture on the screen. I did some research and saw some videos where some guys used some silicone conductive compound thermal pads to fix the problem . This is only a project for me. I'm going to try the thermal pads and see what happens. What do you think?

Visit www.LCDRepairGuide.com. For screen problems not covered in this video, study "LCD/LED Screen Panel Repair" by Kent Liew. Generally speaking, when the backlights come ON and there's sound but no video (on either side of the screen), suspect a shorted LCD. What to do next: disconnect the FPC cables one at a time. If disconnecting one or the other gets half of the display back, then the cut off modification (described starting on page 78) should help you to restore the other side. And for what it's worth, if you can narrow the problem down to just one line, consider notching that line out of the FPC cable. Kent's book is written in Chinese English, so you may have to go over the material several times to grasp what he's saying, but the effort is well worth it. Good luck and thanks for commenting!

LG 32LB580B-SA is an LCD/LED television. As it's backlit with LEDs, not fluorescent tubes, one or more LEDs may have caught fire causing an open circuit to the right side of the screen. To see what that looks like, watch the video titled "Insignia NS-55D550NA15 LED/LCD TV Repair." So, now you know two things that might be causing the problem. When the timing control board is located at the bottom, its ribbon cables are also at the bottom, and the connectors are often quite corroded from spray cleaners that drip onto them. Please indicate the make and model of your TV. If it's an edge-lit LCD/LED TV, not an LED TV with old-style florescent back lights (like the one shown here), and if it looks like the screen has been cut exactly in half (right down the middle), then most likely one of the two LED strips failed. Otherwise, you might have the problem shown in this video: Insignia NS-55D550NA15 LED/LCD TV Repair which you can watch at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psWckpV-3p2tgok.html Good luck and thanks for asking!

Couldn’t you have then just left the piece of plastic wedged in on top of the ribbon connection and put it all back together for a real quick and easy fix?
@LawrencePina
@LawrencePina 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt the plastic wedge would have survived reassembly and transport. It almost certainly would have fallen out. Best to attempt a more permanent fix. Good luck, and thanks for commenting!

This video might have been recorded using an old JVC miniDVD camcorder. It broke right around that time. There are no parts available for that model and I've since stopped using it.

Based on my experience with similar size Samsung LCD/LED TVs, the symptoms you describe (half of the display is black and on an angle) suggest a shorted data line in the LCD panel, not a bad board. In that case, it might be very easy to fix. First, you need to to identify which of the two ribbon cables connecting the timing control board to the display panel assembly controls which side of the screen. Disconnect them one at a time to determine that. When the cable leading to the shorted side is disconnected, the other side should display perfectly. Next, you need to identify which signal line(s) on the disconnected side lead to the shorted data column(s). It's generally only one line. This procedure is easier shown in a video than described, but here goes: Fold a piece of 1/2" cellophane tape onto itself so that the sticky sides are stuck to each other. Starting from one side or the other, insert it into the open connector on the T-Con board so that it will keep 1/2" worth of lines from making contact. Reconnect the disconnected cable you identified, power up and see what happens, If there's no change or the display is worse, power down, move the cable over 1/2" and try again. At some point, the black half of the display will turn back on (believe me, it will), but it won't look very good. You're in the ballpark! Now you have to identify which of the insulated lines covered by the 1/2" of tape is causing the problem. Do that by powering down and carefully moving the insulator just one line at a time until the display turns black again. The line you just uncovered (just reconnected), is the line that's shorted. They're two fixes at this point. Some guys try to cut a really narrow sliver of tape and position it just right. I find it easier just to notch that line out of the ribbon cable. Now, the display might not look 100% perfect with one data line bypassed, but most people are not able to tell the difference. How long will this repair last? Well, the first time I fixed a TV having this problem was about 9 months ago. It's still working fine. The author of the ebook (www.lcdrepairguide.com/screen-repair/) I learned this procedure from, Kent Lieu, claims still no comebacks after 1 year. Other people, sharing their experiences at Jestine Yong's website (www.electronicsrepairfaq.com) have had similar success. Thing is, it doesn't cost anything, it's hard to understand but easy to do, and there's a high chance of success, so I hope you'll give this a try. Chances are you can have that TV fixed in no time! Good luck and thanks for commenting.

In my family we have a saying: "What you do, shows what you are." Faced with a technical problem that had not previously been documented on KZfaq, I make an admittedly amateur video intended to help people, and obviously it has. You leave leave a nasty comment intended to do what? Like I said...
