This was Le Mans' golden age man, Group C cars were absolute beasts, especially the 962.

I was there watching this with my best mate mathew, we were both 13yrs old and were standing on the bank just after the Dunlop bridge. It was my first time abroad and I had one of the 1yr passports you used to be able to get from the post office, great memories.

I was there that year and me and my mate was standing on the grandstand abowe the pits as the race started. But after that we went to the restaurant at Les Hunadieres. Man what a great memory in life that is! Love 24 Houres of Le Mans and thank´s for the upload. Cheers from Sweden

Man what I would give to have been able to have watched Le Mans from like 63 64! I'm 31 so I didn't start getting into racing until early 2003 mabey 2004 ish I remember not long after I got serious about what hung when they came to mosport every year. Seeing as how in two hours from mosport that's when they Falken tire Porsche 911 was on its game. Audi has their prototype diesel and the Rolex sport car series was different. I loved when it when it separated but the racing now it's amazing but hey who knows what could have happened had they stayed apart and who know they would have developed and would give alot more seats for drivers to do what they love

@@Spyker8921 Too bad it's not the 1989 Le Mans race, or else you'd say "Mercedes dominating is exciting?" Then you'd be in the awkward position of accurately describing the 2018 F1 season. :P

Just what I was thinking. He's caning it and as they come into the Ford chicane you can see the massive lean as he turns right. Absolutely brilliant. Would love to know who's at the wheel.

TheThirdMan meh, in all honesty, I’m sure opinions would vary. He chicanes just hook one up into trouble, where I’m sure others would claim it’s safer. I’m just old school, I guess.

They did add them for safety reasons because you wouldn't fancy having a tyre blowout at over 360km/h which might send the car flying into the trees
@thethirdman225
@thethirdman225 4 жыл бұрын
@@AdamTheMan1993 The original proposal came from the drivers, back in 1989 and led by Jean-Louis Schlesser. Tyre blowouts were definitely one of their concerns. Klaus Niedzwiedz suffered a major accident in a Sauber in 1988 because of that.

Great upload but have to correct you that the TWR designed Jags sponsored by Silk Cut had debuted at LM in 1986, were very quick but all retired, '87 they got one car to the finish (in 5th) but in '88 they finally won after an incredible race, 2nd place Porsche still on the same lap! Been going to LM since '82, right from the beginning of Group C, without a doubt THE golden era for the race, not just the racing itself, the atmosphere and layout of the circuit was completely different. Just as one example, those incredibly crowded pits date back to 1955 when the cars were much smaller (and slower!), there's no garage behind them so any repairs on the cars had to be carried out right there in the pitlane, unprotected from the weather and other cars, no pitlane speed limit then so the top drivers just booted it after their stop and expected others to get out of the way....happy days!

And you could sit on the edge of the roof above the pits, with your legs dangling down, smoking a cigarette, watching everything happening below you ... I absolutely loved le mans that year, although I got wet at the start and lived in those clothes all weekend, the airline had misplaced my luggage and I'd left my wallet in Dublin duty free ...

There was literally nothing to dislike. If you compare it to F1 today, they are slower, top speed a mean, they make a dreadful sound, are uglier (also than today’s F1 cars) and the amount of competitors is embarrassing if you compare the 10 F1 teams against 40 ore 50 plus cars in that era😢
