Great video. I had heard of it back in 1985 as an 8 year old - telling my age here as i went on a camping holiday in Canet Plage near Perpignan. I did not go on it back then but in 2018, I returned to the area for a short break - i travelled on the 'le petit train jaune' in summer of 2018 from Ur-Les-Escaldes to Villefranche-de-Conflent. What a spectacular journey. I had to signal the train to stop and the conductor came round for me to make payment. I loved how captured the beauty and engineering feats of the line. I always enjoy your videos. This has got to be one of my favourite rail journeys. I was on the old school train like you. There was hardly any graffiti on it and shocked to see the amount on the train you were on.

I travelled this route, probably in the 1980's, with my wife, as part of a rail tour around France, with a quick detour to Geneva. It was arranged by a travel company whose name I forget and I hadn't heard of Le Petit Train Jaune beforehand. We rode in an open carriage, a bit chilly, but we thought it well worth it for the unrestricted 360deg views - and it was bright sunshine - the best part of the whole tour.

My childhood train. So many awesome memories. So proud to see it on your videos. Fun fact: a bit like the "french high speed stations" some of those stations are quite far from the town centre. Font Romeu is a 4km walk/taxi journey from the station. Also the new stadler trains were a huge scandal when they arrived as they couldn't drive as fast as the older trains. And they're quite hated by us locals.
@NonstopEurotrip

Thank you so much! The new trains haven't got the romance of the old ones! I suppose with regards to the stations being far away, I guess they've got to work with the terrain as much as they can! 😁

@@jbcaycay8035 thank you for responding. I appreciate your input. Our subways are third rail powered as well as the two suburban high speed lines. Most of our commuter network is overhead wire. Amtrak(our national railroad) uses overhesd wires from Boston to Washington and to Harrisburg PA. Thanks again.
@KyrilPG
@KyrilPG 11 ай бұрын
@@scottyerkes1867 Probably for weather considerations and icing. Given the altitude and harsh winter conditions, overhead lines would be more prone to icing with a fairly low traffic. A third rail is usually easier to heat and the contact shoe can more easily scrape ice from the 3rd rail than a pantograph arch can scrape ice from a catenary line. And open air carriages with an overhead line is probably a big no no. But that's just me guessing.

Yes, I took this fantastic little train in 1982 when returning from Andorra. It was a warm summer's late afternoon and those open carriages looked so tempting - but I spotted an ominous dark cloud lurking in the distance so took a seat in an enclosed carriage instead, however a large group of schoolchildren couldn't resist travelling in the open air. Once underway the sky grew ever darker - and then with an enormous clap of thunder the heavens opened for most of the rest of the journey - guess it was still an adventure for those poor soaked kids!

Just lovely... Back in 1992 we did this journey purely by chance after arriving in Perpignan after getting the overnight from Gare Austerlitz . We had bought a train ticket available at the time called "France vacance" that gave you three twenty four hour periods within ten days using a scratchcard idea where on starting your journey you scratched the date and time of your journey ... We were heading to Cerbere / Port Bou for a train down to the Beautiful Tarragona but spotting this little yellow train , asked a few questions and realised it was to good to miss... It was just brilliant so we changed our plans .... It was this and then a bus up to Andorra....... The train was not anything as touristy and we sat outside in September and shared Cognac with some french people.... Although brilliant one shorter train journey in my opinion does compare and that is the rack and pinion in Greece from Diakofton to Kalavrita which is amazing.... Try it ....

I knew Le Petit Train Jaune was incredible, but those views are just mind-blowing! I can't believe SNCF have a queuing system at the start station for a train which is a TER. Normally, it's first come first serve on these services... Also I do believe the old trains circulate as well in the winter months (along with the new trains). It's sad that this line is menaced of disappearing from the French rail network, I hope I will get to ride it one day! Great video as always :)

Have you ever traveled on the US narrow gauge trains? I've done the East Broad Top, the Cumbres & Toltec, the Silverton, and the White Pass, all were fun. I also rode the Edaville RR that was a tourist operation using old Maine narrow gauge (2 ft) the other were 3 ft gauge). the Swiss have a lot of metre gauge trains and quite a few even smaller. The American lines were generally built about 30 year before this line and thru much more rugged territory, praise for the real men who built them. These lines opened up territory to passengers and commerce before the truck and car was available. When I first read about them i thought they were a joke, but they did a lot of work and they feel much more on a human scale.

The timetable in force then enabled a break at Mont Louis. The village is a fair walk up a steep hill. Hi, great video of a great railway line. I did the journey with my son 10 years ago. We left the car at Villefranche-Vernet les Bains station, took the morning train all the way to Latour de Carol, and returned by bus for 1€ over the scenic route above the Cerdagne on D618. As we were the only passenger on the bus, the driver even stopped wherever we wanted to take photos, also from the furnace from the main road and at the highest point of the road. Back in Villefranche, we took the road back towards Andorra, to follow the railway line from the road and take photos of the astonishing line from above and beneath. This roundtrip (Perpignan-) Villefranche-Latour de Carol and back can still be made in one day today. Best regards, Peter

Hi, I do not know if you have done the ride on the only one rack and pinion train line in Spain, which is called "Cremallera de Nuria", you can reach this line starting from Barcelona Sants and take the line going to Puigcerda, then your stop is Ribes Enllaç, in this station, you can take this train. it jumps to Vall de Nuria, there you can visit the Monastery and the sky resort placed there, a nice lake close to and there's also a good restaurant. This line runs all the year even when it snows, I highly recommend this trip, amazing views !!

Thank you, nonstop eurotrip! This is the first video I see after my computer has been repaired. What a joy to see you again. Insufficient set. 4:19 No, it's France, not Spain. 14:20 Weren't you lectured for taking so many risks? You are too critical. In this case, I would have preferred to take the ventilated wagon than the closed one. I didn't know this train existed before, and I don't really like the ride because of the deficit. What a lack of profitability for this train! Due to the damage caused by the new Stadler train sets to the tracks, they are no longer operated. The historical railstock from 1909 operates daily all year long :-) The central bogey of the Z150 railstock (the new Stadler) concentrates almost all the weigh of the train set, this causes too much effort on the tracks.
